RE: An Aira Update

2019-01-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree that Aira while having come up at various times before is certainly not
in everybody's face all the time. If you, Andy, are subscribe to so many lists
and Podcasts where it is discussed you obviously have a great deal of spare
time for all this. I can hardly keep up with the Viphone, Jaws and Windows 10
groups which I am subscribed to and rarely do I hear about Aira. In fact, it's
on my list of things to do to find out more about what Aira is offering in
Canada.
I certainly did not consider Jonathan's post inappropriate in any way and find
it regrettable that Mark apparently judged it to be so. I don't think in a case
like Aira you can separate the app from the service. There are many examples on
this list where services are discussed. People ask questions about Apple Music
or Netflix and not always is the question strictly about the Music app or the
Netflix app but about the service in general and I therefore wonder what makes
Aira so different. There have been lengthy discussions here about the services
and phone plans offered by various US cell phone providers where I am pretty
sure Mark has participated or even initiated the topic and that is hardly only
iPhone related.
But of course groups like Viphone are not democracies and Mark is the moderator
so I guess his word is the law, but it is unfortunate to loose any future
contributions of a member as accomplished and well-regarded as Jonathan.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Yes, the Qardio blood pressure cuff is simple to use and the app is very
accessible. Note that Qardio is spelled with a q.

During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had

Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple

I see so little about Aira, I appreciate the occasional post on this
list and others about changes in the apps and the service. If I were to
see the same information on multiple sources, I's just use the delete
key rather than spend my time complaining  about the so called
propaganda. If a service or app is worthwhile to me then I spend the
money acquiring it. If it's beneficial to others but not to me then I
just ignore it and let others enjoy it.  I'm not so selfish or arrogant
to think that just because I'm not interested in something then
therefore it isn't useful to anyone.

Hi Mark and everyone. Given this new policy, I'll be unsubscribing after around
9 years on the
group, but I want to express my disappointment about this change.
During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had many
occasions where app
developers would engage with us about their apps, especially when those apps
were blindness
specific.
Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple occasions,
with some mentioning
it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed appropriate, on-topic, and of
value to interested
members to let them know about recent developments, especially a free trial.
This has been welcomed
on other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the service,
when the app is the
vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered on-topic,
because one uses it on
an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome
to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS and Android. If an app
developer wishes to take
time to engage, they are welcomed with open arms.
blindphones+subscr...@groups.io.
And of course as has been already pointed out in this thread, there's an Aira
group too.
Thanks all.

However, and this is to everyone, the iOS app only, is to be discussed on this

RE: Responding to Most Recent Text Using Ciri

2019-01-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, this is an unfortunate development and one I hope more people join me in
reporting to Apple Accessibility.
There is a work-around which isn't great, but it's better than nothing.
Ask SIRI to read your most recent message if that is the one you want to reply
to. SIRI will read it and she may ask if you want to reply, but even if she
doesn't, you can then tell her to reply and she'll do it.
Yes, I know, it's another great step forward in SIRI advancements 8 years after
Apple started SIRI, she can reply if she first read the message, but not
otherwise. Of course I am being sarcastic here since it's another stupid little
but annoying step backwards.
One good thing is that lately it seems dictation is a lot more accurate.

Subject: Responding to Most Recent Text Using Ciri

Hi all,

Prior to making the mistake of updating my IPhone 5s to the current version
of IOS, I was able to tell Ciri to reply to the most recent text. This was
especially useful when I got a group message. Now saying reply to, or
respond to, most recent text only elicits a to whom do you want to send a
message response. Sigh. So next I tried just repeating the 9 names in the
group. After 8 tries where Ciri would only pick up the first 7 names, I
went to type in a text. After dictating the message, I cannot find the
send button on the text screen. I can quite easily find buttons for
Pandora, store, music & some other things but I cannot for the life of me
find the send button. Why in the world would I ever need Pandora here??

So, does anyone know how I can get Ciri to reply to the most recent text?
And where the heck is the send button on the text message screen? I'm sure
I am going to feel stupid once I find out but really need to reply to this
text so am desperate.

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Can’t really see how any of the smart appliances make you any less lazy when
it if you really want to exercise you can go for a walk or go to the gym and
exercise. Some of these things actually make things easier for us if you think
about it, you can set an Insta pot and know exactly what you’re setting in on
without having to throw on labels. I think the smart thermostat is pretty neat.
Also I don’t really think many companies make things these days that are
supposed to last forever, a lot of the time as they are thinking about how to
make the most money out of a product.

Hi Mark,
I think you were splitting hairs here. Plenty of people get on here and talk
about apps that are accessible and how that benefits them. For instance, the
Seeing AI app and all the uses to which they put it. So what is your problem
with this? I don’t use this service, and I don’t see myself doing cell
anytime soon, due to my own personal circumstances. So I have no vested
interest here. But given some of the questionable articles that even you
have posted, notably that nonsense from Forbes magazine, which is a
miserable record when it comes to anything Apple related, I think you should
either start looking at your own post a bit more or lighten up on this one.
Just my two cents.

Hello Jonathan,

Sorry to see you go but that, of course, is your decision to make.

There are many services that we limit to app-specific discussions, on-list.
For example, Amazon Alexa, YouTube, Uber, Lyft, Net Flix, etc.

Like all of the above mentioned services, and their related products, I'm
certain that there are service-specific forums available to those who wish to
discuss AIRA, in more detail.

Just to be clear, any discussion regarding the iOS AIRA app are certainly
welcome, on-list. Having said this, keep in mind that this is not an AIRA
support discussion forum.

This is an extremely high traffic list and so we want to keep the discussion as
close to on-point for iOS related products, as possible.

You are welcome to post any AIRA list subscription information on the list.

All the best to you,

Mark

Hi Mark and everyone. Given this new policy, I'll be unsubscribing after around
9 years on the group, but I want to express my disappointment about this change.
During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had many
occasions where app developers would engage with us about their apps,
especially when those apps were blindness specific.
Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple occasions,
with some mentioning it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed
appropriate, on-topic, and of value to interested members to let them know
about recent developments, especially a free trial. This has been welcomed on
other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the service,
when the app is the vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered on-topic,
because one uses it on an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS and
Android. If an app developer wishes to take time to engage, they are welcomed
with open arms.

Can’t really see how any of the smart appliances make you any less lazy when it
if you really want to exercise you can go for a walk or go to the gym and

Re: An Aira Update

2019-01-26 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
I'm enjoying using the AIRA app as well. I joined the Aira email group as well
before I signed up to ask questions. aira+subscr...@groups.io
It's a great group to ask questions about the service. But the app is awesome
and totally accessible.

I see your point, Andy. Be that as it may, any new service being offered to
our community, is always appreciated.

However, and this is to everyone, the iOS app only, is to be discussed on this

Hi Sherry:

I think if you ask Siri to find your most recent text, she will find it, read
it to you and then ask you if you want to reply. So just ask her to find your
most recent text instead of asking her to respond to it.

Hope this is clear.

Subject: An Aira Update

Hi all. Since the middle of October, I’ve been Aira’s VP of Explorer
communications. Since Aira has an iOS app, I thought the following info may be
of interest to some.

For those not familiar with Aira, we provide real-tine audio description of
anything visual, provided by security-vetted, trained professionals. You can
use it with your iPhone on its own, or if you perform any tasks where it’s
useful to have both of your hands free, we offer optional smart glasses.

The Aira app is free, and it’s free to use in an increasing number of
locations, or for an increasing number of tasks. We also offer subscription
plans, much like cell phone plans, where you can use it for any task, anywhere.

If you’ve been curious about Aira and have wanted to take it for a spin in your
own environment, we’ve released a free 7-Day Trial of our full paid service.
This offer means that anyone with a free account can try anytime access to
Aira’s professional agents whenever it suits them – just like a paying
subscriber.

The 7-Day Trial provides 30 minutes to try Aira’s service over a period of
seven days. Some of that time will be used for setting up account preferences
and asking questions about the service, but the majority of that time is free
to use for any task. It’s a great opportunity for people new to Aira to
experience why so many use it as a must-have tool for enhancing everyday life.

Got some mail that needs sorting? Need a professional agent to connect to your
computer to help with an inaccessible site? Or just want to research nearby
restaurants or stores? Well, now you can, as a free user and from the comfort
of your home.

For all the details including a list of frequently asked questions, head on
over to

https://aira.io/free-trial

Second, Aira has recently released a comprehensive series of training modules
available for streaming online, or for download in DAISY and MP3. You can find
it at:

http://aira.io/training. This is a good way to learn about Aira even if you’re
not signed up yet but are curious. Because this is such a new class of
technology, many people not only want to know how to use Aira, but how it might
fit into their toolbox of blindness skills and apps.

Finally, we’ve just launched a podcast, called Airacast.

It’s packed with news, interviews, tips, tricks, listener comments and more.

Subscribe to Airacast now from all the places most people get their podcasts,
including iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Stitcher, TuneIn and more.
Spotify is coming soon, iHeart Radio in a couple of months and an Alexa skill
will be released eventually.

Many people enjoy hearing podcasts through HumanWare’s Victor Reader Stream, so
of course it’s listed there too.

Should you wish to enter the RSS feed manually into your podcast client right
away, it is:

https://airacast.libsyn.com/rss

Search for Airacast in your podcast app of choice, or Here’s an Apple podcasts
link for you.

https://itunes.apple.com/nz/podcast/airacast-with-jonathan-mosen/id1449888701

All the best.

plans, much like cell phone plans, where you can use it for any task, anywhere.

2019-01-26 Thread Holly

Hi Sherry:

I think if you ask Siri to find your most recent text, she will find it,
read it to you and then ask you if you want to reply. So just ask her to
find your most recent text instead of asking her to respond to it.

Hope this is clear.

RE: Responding to Most Recent Text Using Ciri

2019-01-26 Thread sherrywells1157
Apparently I wasn't very clear in my query. I do exactly what the 2 of you say
- tell Ciri to text someone then say my text & say yes when prompted to send.

My current problem is that I get a message that went to 9 people including me.
I used to be able to tell Ciri, respond to most recent text & she would send
my text to all 9 people. This no longer works since I upgraded to the most
current IOS. Telling Ciri to text person 1 and person 2 etc is not working
either no matter how clearly I try to say all 9 names. So I was wondering if
there is still a way to tell Ciri to reply to the most recent text & get her to
send a text to all 9 people in the group.

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Sherry, all I do is for example say Siri send a message to Sherry and she will
say what do I want to say . I tell her whatever I wish to say. She will say
ready to send it. If its ok I say send it which she does. If its not ok I say
don’t send it. So you do not need to use the send button.

Hope that helps

An Aira Update

2019-01-26 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi all. Since the middle of October, I've been Aira's VP of Explorer
communications. Since Aira has an iOS app, I thought the following info may
be of interest to some.

For those not familiar with Aira, we provide real-tine audio description of
anything visual, provided by security-vetted, trained professionals. You can
use it with your iPhone on its own, or if you perform any tasks where it's
useful to have both of your hands free, we offer optional smart glasses.

The Aira app is free, and it's free to use in an increasing number of
locations, or for an increasing number of tasks. We also offer subscription
plans, much like cell phone plans, where you can use it for any task,
anywhere.

If you've been curious about Aira and have wanted to take it for a spin in
your own environment, we've released a free 7-Day Trial of our full paid
service. This offer means that anyone with a free account can try anytime
access to Aira's professional agents whenever it suits them - just like a
paying subscriber.

The 7-Day Trial provides 30 minutes to try Aira's service over a period of
seven days. Some of that time will be used for setting up account
preferences and asking questions about the service, but the majority of that
time is free to use for any task. It's a great opportunity for people new to
Aira to experience why so many use it as a must-have tool for enhancing
everyday life.

Got some mail that needs sorting? Need a professional agent to connect to
your computer to help with an inaccessible site? Or just want to research
nearby restaurants or stores? Well, now you can, as a free user and from the
comfort of your home.

For all the details including a list of frequently asked questions, head on
over to

Second, Aira has recently released a comprehensive series of training
modules available for streaming online, or for download in DAISY and MP3.
You can find it at:

http://aira.io/training. This is a good way to learn about Aira even if
you're not signed up yet but are curious. Because this is such a new class
of technology, many people not only want to know how to use Aira, but how it
might fit into their toolbox of blindness skills and apps.

Finally, we've just launched a podcast, called Airacast.

It's packed with news, interviews, tips, tricks, listener comments and more.

Subscribe to Airacast now from all the places most people get their
podcasts, including iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Stitcher,
TuneIn and more. Spotify is coming soon, iHeart Radio in a couple of months
and an Alexa skill will be released eventually.

Many people enjoy hearing podcasts through HumanWare's Victor Reader Stream,
so of course it's listed there too.

Should you wish to enter the RSS feed manually into your podcast client
right away, it is:

https://airacast.libsyn.com/rss

Search for Airacast in your podcast app of choice, or Here's an Apple
podcasts link for you.

Yes, the Qardio blood pressure cuff is simple to use and the app is very

Sherry, all I do is for example say Siri send a message to Sherry and she will
say what do I want to say . I tell her whatever I wish to say. She will say
ready to send it. If its ok I say send it which she does. If its not ok I say
don’t send it. So you do not need to use the send button.

Hope that helps

Responding to Most Recent Text Using Ciri

2019-01-26 Thread sherrywells1157

I've stopped using the app because of this.

Re: Your Expensive Smart Appliance May Not Last A Decade

2019-01-26 Thread Angie Nutt
I can see a use for the laces where someone may have a hand problem or maybe
someone who can’t bend for long. I think the toothbrush a good idea as I
believe they can let you know how long to brush. I learned how long to do it
but have heard of one which gives a kind of pulse to let you know when to move
it to other teeth etc.

All the best

Re: Read labels on cans

2019-01-26 Thread Richard Turner
Seeing AI Product channel can work great to get the bar code which may contain
more information an you can read on the label because of the curve. But, if you
just want to know what it is and not any other details, TapTapSee is also very
good and it is made by the same folks who do CamFind, but it doesn't try to
show you ads about where you can buy said product. TapTapSee is designed for
the blind for identifying objects of all kinds.

Both Seeing AI and TapTapSee are free.
