Carriers still break up messages if they're using SMS. Carriers and messaging apps have gotten better at concatenating long messages, which is why you're not seeing it anymore. Here's a good article explaining the situation. It's a bit dated though.

I have send as SMS turned on because some of my contacts use Android. Because of the 140 character limits of text messages, I am wondering whether all parts of a truncated message will be sent to the recipient or only the first segment. I should probably mention that I am using IOS 15.4.
