you'll have a symbols screen. twice lands you in the numbers screen, where

Command R works in Safari to reload, but not in mail to reply, so you're partly

Turn off multi-gesture in settings, and see how you go that way. Often those 4
finger gestures confuse things, thus making the experience less than ideal.
