I've read several books using the Nook app on my iPod and my iPad. Both work
exceedingly well on either device. It's about as simple as it gets in terms of
operational use.
The thing I like about it the most as compared to iBooks is that it will read

continuously.
I have only read free books on the Nook app, but that would be no different
than a purchased book.

When you go to apple.com and decide on something to purchase during the
checkout process you will have the opportunity to enter your gift card number.
This as far as I know is the only way to cash in an Apple gift card.

That simply means you have to redeem it by purchasing something through the
online Apple Store. You enter the number and pin at checkout. An iTunes gift
card is entirely different and is bought through the iTunes Store.
