RE: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-13 Thread Dennis Long
I have to agree. In 2022 both screen readers should have the same features.
They don’t. Both screen readers should fully support keyboard users they don’t.

Google's TalkBack is open source too, and that hasn't helped them much.

I just got an update and in the release notes it said that it's being
discontinued in January but that if you already have it installed on your phone
you can use it through June. I hope that seeing AI doesn't go to.

I have a beacon set up for my house.

Re: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-13 Thread Devin Prater
So at my job, we have a cafeteria that students and staff can eat at. I
usually go there, since the meals are cheap and fairly good. Now, there is
some renovation going on on the roof of that building, so we have to go to
another school to get food. Well, that school is across a big, open parking
lot. Soundscape is the only app that reliably got me there and back. I
mean, I'm glad Microsoft researched it, but at what point does a research
project become something people actually depend on? Like I'm gonna have to
really sink time and a bunch of nerves getting lost, on finding another
product. Goodmaps is close, and I'm glad it's cross-platform, but it only
announces an update after like 50 feet, by which time I could be way off
course. Ah well. Accessibility capitalism. At least at one point Microsoft
readily told us they'd treat accessibility like a business, or something
like that.

I just got an update and in the release notes it said that it's being
discontinued in January but that if you already have it installed on your phone
you can use it through June. I hope that seeing AI doesn't go to.

I didn’t use this app regularly, but it got me out of a couple of sticky

That is too bad. I know what streets are in my neighborhood, and I like to
just turn on MS Soundscapes and have it announce the streets as I cross them.
I have a beacon set up for my house.

I also liked the virtual street preview.

I have Google maps, and of course there's apple maps, but what other very basic
GPS is out there for those of us who just need to know where we are and not
necessarily plan routes for everything.

RE: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Of course, but I was referring to all of those times people have tossed out
making something open source as if that would solve all numbers of problems.
I’ve seen this numerous times when Eloquence has come up, as if by making
Eloquence open source someone would swoop in, port it to 64-bit and make it
available across all platforms.

I agree no one on this list said making Sound Scape open source would be a
panacea, and I regret using that term. I should have avoided that short hand
and elaborated my point more clearly.

In response to the comment earlier that making something open source is not a
panacea, I merely want to point out that no one ever said it was a panacea,
only that instead of shutting it down and keeping the code to themselves which
they would have the right to do; they are making it available to anyone who
wants to develop it further, or to simply incorporate into another app.
If no one picks it up, o well.

And, they are not just "abandoning it" as some have said. They are making it

True, I did sometimes have issues with it saying street names after or as I
crossed them. However, I don't know of any other sound-based app that would
give you passive information about a marker or beacon.

I thought this would likely happen when Microsoft announced layoffs in October
and an intention to not renew many contracts. Personally, I did not like how
the app announced streets as I was crossing them instead of before I arrived at
them, as other blindness navigation apps perform.

Re: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
I've been calling something like this for years unfortunately. It was
only ever a research project which in turn means it can be pulled
whenever they want, but (more than understandably) nobody thinks of
that when they invest the days, weeks, months in learning it and often
making it their default GPS app. It was a great GPS solution with only
a very minimal learning curve. It was my go to suggestion for a free
offering and I've lost count of how many parents, mobility teachers
etc who have ultimately gone on to purchase iPhones after I've shown
it to them.

It's a nice gesture that they've released the code but that's going to
be largely meaningless for most folks. It's possible that a community
could form around maintaining the infrastructure required to keep it
running, but the more it gets used the greater the cost. Even if the
cost can be overcome I personally don't see a clear route to getting
it back onto the app store.

RE: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Making things open source isn't a panacea. It only works if there's a person or
a community who's committed to picking it up and running with it. Although this
does happen, and when it does it can be great, but I'm afraid this is the
exception and not the rule.

Interesting. It worked really well for me. I used it to set markers and beacons
on hikes and at music festivals. At festivals, I would set a beacon at the
place where I set up my chair or the place where my group was standing. I also
used it to learn streets in my new neighborhood and to work on clicker training
my dog to identify locations. With its help, I knew where to begin signaling
her to find particular targets.

I agree, it never seemed to work very well for me.

Re: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Kelly Pierce
I thought this would likely happen when Microsoft announced layoffs in
October and an intention to not renew many contracts. Personally, I
did not like how the app announced streets as I was crossing them
instead of before I arrived at them, as other blindness navigation
apps perform.

I just got an update and in the release notes it said that it's being
discontinued in January but that if you already have it installed on your phone
you can use it through June. I hope that seeing AI doesn't go to.

I have it downloaded as well and maybe I should try to use it again more, but I

I just got an update and in the release notes it said that it's being
discontinued in January but that if you already have it installed on your phone
you can use it through June. I hope that seeing AI doesn't go to.

Re: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Lisa Belville
That is too bad.  I know what streets are in my neighborhood, and I like
to just turn on MS Soundscapes and have it announce the streets as I
cross them.  I have a beacon set up for my house.

I also liked the virtual street preview.

I have Google maps, and of course there's apple maps, but what other
very basic GPS is out there for those of us who just need to know where
we are and not necessarily plan routes for everything.

RE: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I doubt Seeing AI will follow this example, it seemed to me that Microsoft
Soundscape was more of an experiment and I assume it is by far the less popular
if you compared it to Seeing AI.
I have it downloaded as well and maybe I should try to use it again more, but I
never found it that useful.

Subject: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

I just got an update and in the release notes it said that it's being
discontinued in January but that if you already have it installed on your phone
you can use it through June. I hope that seeing AI doesn't go to.

RE: Microsoft sound scape being discontinued

2022-12-12 Thread Richard Turner
This is sad news.
But, I went to the link provided in the update and will copy the text below
following the link. It will become open source, but read below for details and
dates.

The Microsoft Soundscape iOS app is being discontinued as of Jan 3, 2023, and
will not be available for download. Existing installations can be used until
June 30, 2023. Additional information: https://aka.ms/ossblog
For more than six years, Microsoft Research has been honored to develop the
Soundscape research project, which was designed to deliver information about a
person’s location and points of interest and has guided individuals to desired
places and in unfamiliar spaces using augmented-reality and three-dimensional
audio. While not a traditional turn-by-turn navigation mobile app, the
Soundscape research project allowed us to explore ways that audio can enhance
mobility and expand navigation experiences without the need to follow
directions on a small display.

Beginning January 3, 2023, the Soundscape code will be available as open-source
software, so that anyone can continue to build on, and find new ways to
leverage, this novel feature set for the growing navigation opportunities in
today’s world. As Microsoft Research continues to expand into new accessibility
innovation areas, we hope the open-source software release of the Soundscape
code supports the community in further developing confidence and utility of
spatial audio navigation experiences.

Also on January 3, 2023, the Microsoft Soundscape iOS app will no longer be
available for download from the App Store, although existing installations can
continue to be used until the end of June 2023. We are grateful to all of those
who have tried and found value in the Microsoft Soundscape app and appreciate
all the feedback and stories you have shared with us over the years.

Through the Microsoft Soundscape journey, we were delighted to discover the
many valuable experiences Soundscape enabled, from empowering mobility
instructors, to understanding the role of audio in adaptive sports, to
supporting blind or low-vision individuals to go places and do essential
activities for their lives. By making the Soundscape code available as
open-source software, we hope the interest and potential continues to grow.
Documentation on how to build and use the system from the new GitHub Soundscape
page will be shared on January 3, 2023.
