I don’t know about walking tracks in your country But I wouldn’t rely on gps apps for walking tracks here in n new Zealand, If you don’t turn in the right place it’s a sudden stop at the bottom of a 1000 foot drop, Or the track that was there yesterday, Is missing some critical section tomorrow. I’m looking for something that would be useful on say a 100 or 200 mile hike in the woods, say At trail. Either something GPS locations can be added to or if possible even have it follow us on a map to indicate if we are on the trail. I’m new at this so not sure what is the most helpful. For non-established trails, are you looking for bread crumb navigation? Prominent survival bloggers have evaluated iPhones and $500 Garman navigation devices in places without cell signals and found both offer the same level of accuracy. Hello, I have a question on GPS Apps. Using Blind square, or any of the Apps, I noticed that sometimes the direction will say, 100 feet to your right or left or whatever it is. Sometimes the left or right is correct but, is there a way to know for sure if it is left or right? If you are solo, no one is around, it could be a problem to go in the wrong direction.I know that is obcious but, just asking for a friend. I can't figure out how to make it talk. Loadstone tells me it has found GPS, then goes silent. Re: GPS Apps for hiking?
I have an old one here called Ariadne GPS which allows you to set Poi's and then it gives you distance and compass bearing - clock face directions to the chosen poi. Still seems quite reliable, don't know why I didn't use it more or lately since I walk water courses as much as public highways. Think it good for on-water as well as off-road. Sailing/canoeing is popular too. RobH. - Original Message - From: "Eric Caron" To: Sent: Thursday, May 07, 2020 11:46 PM Subject: GPS Apps for hiking? Hi foks, Is there a good GPS app for hiking? Thanks folks, Keep the suggestions coming. I’ll try the near by explorer. I had the app but never played with it. I have good coverage so I’ll see if the paid version is worth it if it actually is useful when hiking. I’ve got a lot to learn to see if it is helpful. If other apps might be more useful send the tips my way.
