Apple TV audio questions

2014-11-04 Thread Rob

Dear List,
I am looking to purchase a Apple TV to use as an AirPlay device for audio.
If my TV has RCA audio out jacks, will the audio from the apple TV go
through those jacks to my powered amp speakers?
or if not, what would I have to do in order to get my speakers with RCA
audio connectors to connect to the apple TV?
these questions may seem strange, but remember I never had a apple TV
before.

Thanks,
Rob

RE: Apple TV audio questions

The apple tv has two outputs, HDMI and toslink (fiber optic). To get audio out
o an rca setup, you'll need a tos link to rca adaptor of some sort.

RE: Apple TV audio questions

2014-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Rob,

As Larry pointed out, HDMI and Optical out are the only outputs on the Apple
TV. If you plan to connect your Apple TV to your LCD TV via HDMI and you have a
pair of powered speakers connected to your TV's optical audio ot then yes, this
should work as long as you are able to switch inputs on your TV. I have a Sony
and the only way to switch inputs is by pressing the input button on top of the
TV or on the remote and then to arrow up and down in a menu which shows all
inputs. I have that list written down so if I know what input I am on, for
example, HDMI 1, I can switch to HDMI 2 easily enough as it is just one below,
if I wanted to switch to Component 1 I would have to go up 2 clicks. Not ideal
but workable.
I used to have a fairly high-end Sony home theatre receiver and a lot of the
major inputs could be selected by pressing a button on the remote. But I just
decided to downgrade in a way and upgrade in another way and I bought a Sonos
Playbar and Sonos Sub. I decided to sell my Sony receiver which when I bought
it 5 years ago was $2,000 and to get rid of my big main speakers in the living
room and the centre speaker on top of the TV replacing it all with the Playbar
and the Sub and down the road probably with 2 Play 3 players for rear channels
completing a 5.1 surround system. I have had other Sonos players for 5 years
and love the accessibility of the app, the ease of use and all the options as
well as the fact that I get regular upgrades with new features. I guess if the
best stereo sound for music was my main concern I wouldn't do this, but I have
another very high-end stereo system in my music room downstairs with a tube amp
and custom-built speakers and subwovers so if I want the best music listening I
go downstairs, upstairs is for convenience and for TV/movies/audio books and so
on.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Apple TV audio questions

2014-11-04 Thread Merv Keck
Sieghard

You may be the individual who can assist me in answering my question about
how best to get decent sound out of my Apple TV. However, I understand this
may not be the proper list for such a question. So if this is beyond the
scope of this list please feel free to write me off list and answer this
question. However, if the moderators are ok with it I think others may find
it of benefit as well.

I have the latest Apple TV and my Samsung has two HDMI connections. I have a
Samsung sound bar which I did not realize at the time was not the best
choice. I probably should have saved for something high end like Sonos.
However, now that I am asking is there an advisable way to get decent sound
from the Apple TV through a Sound Bar? If I connect my Apple TV directly to
the Samsung Sound bar the Apple TV will not wake up. I also tried a Kineva 5
HDMI duplicator and it will not wake up with one of those. However if I run
it directly in to the back of the TV it wakes up. Then, of course, I only
have the TV sound and not the sound bar. Do you get where I am coming from?
The sound Bar has optical connection and HDMI but although the individual at
Best Buy said the TV had optical when we got the TV installed we discovered
it did not. Am I guessing correctly in thinking you are going to advise
picking up a Sonos sound bar when we come into some money or do you have
another solution?

Thanks in advance,

Merv

RE: Apple TV audio questions

2014-11-04 Thread David Redman
To the best of my knowledge you have to have the apple tv plugged into a tv
with the hdmi cable and then use the optical connection to your speaker. Then
it should work fine. You can turn the sound down on the tv and use the speaker
for sound. This is what I do with my setup. The only difference is I have the
optical plugged into a surround sound amplifier.
