RE: Downcast and Alternatives
That depends entirely on the podcast itself. If whoever is producing/recording the podcast doesn't implement it, then it won't be available. For the most part, I don't even bother with this feature since most podcasts I listen to excluding accessibility specific related ones anyway don't even have it available. Re: Downcast and Alternatives
You can use Overcast for free or subscribe. I think the free version has ads but as a blind person they don't bother me. I think the ads might just pop up on the screen but it does not affect whatever I am doing with it. Kind regards Chantal On 8/10/20, Rob Armstrong wrote: > I have 3 suggestions for Downcast. > > 1. RE: Downcast and Alternatives
I have 3 suggestions for Downcast. 1. At the bottom of the list of unplayed episodes of a podcast there is a "View other available episodes" button. Double-tap that button to reveal episodes you have already played. You can scroll down the list to find the episode you didn't finish listening to. 2. Move back so you are displaying the list of podcasts you have subscribed to. Double-tap the "More" tab in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then double-tap the Settings button. Locate the "Episodes to keep" heading. Double-tap the item just below this heading. It might say "All unplayed, but it might say something else. After you double-tap, you will be in a list of choices for which episodes to keep. One of your choices is to keep all episodes. When you have made your choice, press the "Back" button until you get back to the items in the More tab. Then double-tap the "Podcasts" tab in the lower left corner of the screen to get back to your list of podcasts. 3. The choices you make in Settings in the More tab are global settings that apply to all of your podcasts. You can also customize the settings for a specific podcast by double-tapping that podcast to open the list of episodes. Then double-tap "Podcast Settings" in the bottom right corner of the screen. There you can change any settings that you want to be different for this specific podcast. My big complaint about Castro is that lately it has stopped updating podcasts and has stopped putting the latest episodes in the inbox which I truly love. RE: Downcast and Alternatives
Yes, I agree. I've tried other podcasting apps and keep coming ack to Downcast. I can't say I've had this particular behavior, so I’m inclined to believe it's just a setting fix. That's the great thing about Downcast. Feed settings are highly customizable. VoiceOver is also able to read a lot of information. The only other podcasting app I use sometimes is Overcast. The one plus it is in my opinion is the sound quality with the included voice boost. It does clean thing sup and offers a more enjoyable listening experience. I'll use it for longer form podcasts like a history series etc. The other plus Overcast has is that you can view your feeds online at: www.overcast.fm and listen to your podcasts there. Overcast's really a more simplified podcasting app so a lot of the information you're used to reviewing with VoiceOver in Downcast just isn't available in Overcast. As much as I prefer the overcast sound, the level of customization offered by Downcast and the information you're provided with keeps me going back to it. I've reached out to the Downcast dev on Twitter and they've mentioned that some sort of sound enhancement is in their plans, but they can't say exactly when. If others reach out requesting the same, maybe it'll become a greater priority. A note about Overcast, I got it originally when it was a one time purchase. I believe it's a subscription based model now. For those of us who bought it back then, it looks like we're grandfathered in. So there's that to consider if you didn't buy Overcast back in the day. Castro seems nice, but honesty, I can't say even with the unlocked features, it's got much more than what Downcast already offers. Again, the only difference could possibly be the voice boost/enhanced audio.
