I am in Chicago and there is a store a couple of blocks from me that replaces batteries and cracked screens on all i devices. the repair guys have special tools to open them up and repair the devices, enabling them to be used for much longer. Apple guys want to sell you new hardware always. Speak to a third party repair guy who only gets paid when he can solve your problem. I can't believe there are none in south Africa. Realize the Corona virus has stopped or slowed manufacturing in Asia and replacement batteries are likely not on the top of the list for inventory restock. All of their devices are sealed. People with the write tools can reseal them after replacing the battery. I checked with our Apple store here, and if they had had a battery they could have replaced it. He told me that apple devices like the iPod touch, apple watch and even iPads are cealed devices so the batteries can not be replaced. I can hardly believe this.
