Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-29 Thread Alan Paganelli

Hi Ari,

I use the Amazon Basics Bluetooth wireless keyboard with my iPhone 5s when
I'm in a hurry or can slip it in my backpack. It's just to handy not to
take it with you. It's about 10 inches from left to right, 5 inches from
front to back and at it's thickest point maybe an inch high. It's powered
by 2 triple A. batteries which I've had in the keyboard sense a year ago
this March. When replying to email and text messages you need not know all
the VO commands. You can just double tap the text box which then would have
focus and just bang away on the keyboard to enter in the text. If you watch
Amazon for when they put the keyboard on special, you can get it for under
20 bucks. Ticked me off too because I paid 26 dollars for mine and they
just had it for 19.99. Oh well!

HTH

PS: There is also a nice soft case for the keyboard if your going to carry
it around in a backpack. The case is 20 bucks as well but very much worth
the price if the keyboard is going to spend a lot of time in a backpack.

Alan

Oh, that's good. I'm tempted to get it. I really do love my Braille display,
but sometimes I just want to type using a QWERTY keyboard and not have to
worry about iOS's weird Braille translation issues/quirks. I've never been
able to get anything to pair with my computer, however, which is the only
place I would use the keyboard besides my iPhone. Oh, well. That's a Windows
thing, and thus not relative to this list. Anyhow, thank you for the
information. It's really appreciated.

Thanks,
Ari

Sieghard, how big would you say the Logitech keyboard it is. To the Apple
keyboard? Is it around the same size? Also, does it use a physical on-off
switch to turn on? I really like the Apple keyboard, but it's one drawback
for me was that it used a button to turn on and off, which in my use case,
often got pressed a lot.

Hi Rena,

The solar keyboard is probably the one from Logitech and while it can
recharge using light, it still is a Bluetooth keyboard and I think
it's pretty safe to say that all iPhone external keyboards connect via

Bluetooth.

The Apple Wireless keyboard is very nice, but so is the Logitech K811
which also allows you to connect 2 more devices, for example, if you
had an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV you could connect all 3 devices and
switch between them simply by pressing F1, F2 and F3.

You can pretty much fully navigate your iPhone with a Bluetooth
keyboard, of course you can type text, you can copy, cut and paste,
you can even dial a phone number, but you can't input numbers during a
call for example if you call your bank and have to enter an account
number. I guess I should qualify this, you can do this if the dialpad
is on the screen and you could then use the arrows to go to a
particular number and select/dial it, but if you had to enter a long
number and go, for example, from 1 to 0 and back to 2 or something
like that you would have to arrow and select your numbers awefully fast
so

the system wouldn't time out.

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-29 Thread Alan Paganelli
The Amazon Basics Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard has an on/off switch and a
blind person can tell by touch the status. The keyboard also has 5 rubber
feet that keeps it from slipping when used on a table top. The describer
mode tells you what each key combo does as well and if you catch it on
special, you can get it for under 20 dollars which didn't make me happy. I
paid 26 bucks for mine. If I remember right, it's around 40 dollars USD.

If you're going to be traveling with the keyboard a lot, I wouldn't get the
Apple one. It's a great keyboard, except that it turns on with the use of a
button, which can easily be pressed. This is unfortunate, especially if you
have the keyboard in a bag which gets bumped a lot, because it might be
turned on often. I would recommend getting a keyboard that uses a physical
on-off switch.

Pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard you get will work with the iPhone. There
are keyboards that are very very small and pocket-sized, but I don't really
like using these. If I'm going to be using a keyboard, I'm usually going to
be typing for quite a while, so getting something about the size of the
Apple keyboard works well for me. Of course, this is just my own use case,
and yours might very. Personally, I like using dictation or Fleksy VO for
short things.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-29 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, another good one is the Logitech Flex K811 keyboard. It can pair
with up to 3 devices. I use mine for my iPhone, iPad and Nexus tablet,
which is of course not an iDevice. The Apple keyboard is good too, but
the major flaw in the thing is the power button. It's on the side and is
a big round edge. Which makes it too easily pressed when you stow it
away in a bag. If you want to go with something cheaper, try the Anker
keyboards from Amazon. Oh, and of course, Amazon sells their own branded
keyboard the Basics, I've pasted a link to a demo I've done with it at
the end of my message. As for what can be done with it, pretty much
everything. Typing of course will be greatly increased.

RE: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Grace,

A lot of people like the Amazon Basics keyboard and if you don't want to
spend $70 (the cost for an Apple Wireless keyboard) or $100 (the cost for
the Logitech K811) then it might be a good way to go. If you live in a
larger city you could always go to an Apple Store and check out the Apple
Wirreless keyboard to see if you like it. It's a very nice keyboard and its
only downfall is the fact that it turns on and off with a push button on the
right side (at the end nearest to where the F12 key is). If you put it in a
bag or backpack there is a very good chance that button gets pushed and then
if the keyboard turns on other keys may get pushed and your iPhone will
react.
I really really like the Logitech K811 because it has a slider switch on the
right side and there is no way it can turn on accidently, it also has a very
nice feel to it and if you end up ever getting an Apple TV and/or iPad, you
can pair up to 3 devices with it and switch between them simply by pressing
F1, F2 and F3.

Regards,
Sieghardto $100 which is the cost

How can I learn about all the different keyboards? If there are so many, how
to be sure that I choose the right one? I got my phone last month and I'm
learning how to use it, something that I don't find too easy.

Rena, as to which one is best, choosing a keyboard is like choosing a pare
of shoes. Some people will like this kind and some will like that kind. I
have the Amazon Basics Bluetooth Keyboard that I'll use with my iPhone when
I want to do email. There are any number of Bluetooth keyboards out there.
For texting, I like the dictate feature instead. Why? No keyboard to have
to drag around. For email, I like the Amazon keyboard. Dictation on email
is alright too if your going to keep your email messages short and sweet.
Dictation probably couldn't handle a message of this size. I hope this
helps answer your questions.

Hello,

I have 2 questions, please:
1. How many keyboards are there for the iPhone? What's the best for a blind
user? I read about the bluetooth, but I also heard about one that is solar.
2. How much can I accomplish using the keyboard? Only to type emails and
notes?
Thank you,
Rena

Only to type emails and
notes?
Thank you,

If you aren't in a hurry, you can catch the Amazon Basics Bluetooth Wireless

for $21.95. Well worth watching and waiting for it.

I've seen people mention the Amazon Basics Keyboard on here before, and some
have said that it stopped working for them after a year or so. Someone, (I
think it might have been Raul), said they found a similar keyboard and it
hadn't died on them. Does anyone remember what that keyboard was? I don't think
it was the solar Logitech one.

The solar keyboard is probably the one from Logitech and while it can

it's pretty safe to say that all iPhone external keyboards connect via

The Apple Wireless keyboard is very nice, but so is the Logitech K811
which also allows you to connect 2 more devices, for example, if you
had an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV you could connect all 3 devices and
switch between them simply by pressing F1, F2 and F3.

You can pretty much fully navigate your iPhone with a Bluetooth
keyboard, of course you can type text, you can copy, cut and paste,
you can even dial a phone number, but you can't input numbers during a
call for example if you call your bank and have to enter an account
number. I guess I should qualify this, you can do this if the dialpad
is on the screen and you could then use the arrows to go to a
particular number and select/dial it, but if you had to enter a long
number and go, for example, from 1 to 0 and back to 2 or something
like that you would have to arrow and select your numbers awefully fast so
 the system wouldn't time out.

Also, any Bluetooth keyboard you might have for your desktop computer will
work with your I-devices. I should say most; all I have tried, but that has
only been a few. Not portable, but then again it depends on how portable you
need a keyboard to be. In my opinion, the Apple Bluetooth is not very
portable, not when compared to my folding, but they are different animals.

So, it really depends on what you want.

Subject: RE: Question about keyboard for iPhone

Hi Rena,

The solar keyboard is probably the one from Logitech and while it can
recharge using light, it still is a Bluetooth keyboard and I think it's
pretty safe to say that all iPhone external keyboards connect via Bluetooth.
The Apple Wireless keyboard is very nice, but so is the Logitech K811 which
also allows you to connect 2 more devices, for example, if you had an
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV you could connect all 3 devices and switch between
them simply by pressing F1, F2 and F3.

You can pretty much fully navigate your iPhone with a Bluetooth keyboard, of
course you can type text, you can copy, cut and paste, you can even dial a
phone number, but you can't input numbers during a call for example if you
call your bank and have to enter an account number. I guess I should qualify
this, you can do this if the dialpad is on the screen and you could then use
the arrows to go to a particular number and select/dial it, but if you had
to enter a long number and go, for example, from 1 to 0 and back to 2 or
something like that you would have to arrow and select your numbers awefully
fast so the system wouldn't time out.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello,

I have 2 questions, please:
1. How many keyboards are there for the iPhone? What's the best for a blind
user? I read about the bluetooth, but I also heard about one that is solar.
2. How much can I accomplish using the keyboard? Only to type emails and
notes?
Thank you,
Rena

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread Gmail
If you're going to be traveling with the keyboard a lot, I wouldn't get the
Apple one. It's a great keyboard, except that it turns on with the use of a
button, which can easily be pressed. This is unfortunate, especially if you
have the keyboard in a bag which gets bumped a lot, because it might be turned
on often. I would recommend getting a keyboard that uses a physical on-off
switch.

Pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard you get will work with the iPhone. There are
keyboards that are very very small and pocket-sized, but I don't really like
using these. If I'm going to be using a keyboard, I'm usually going to be
typing for quite a while, so getting something about the size of the Apple
keyboard works well for me. Of course, this is just my own use case, and yours
might very. Personally, I like using dictation or Fleksy VO for short things.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread RobH.
I think all the keyboards are bluetooth, hwether charged by solar or AC
adapter.

I think you can do more or less anything with one, - type, navigate, which
is pretty well all of it; and after that, it is down to personal taste.
Bigger or smaller, ifxed to the case or separate? and so on.

RE: Question about keyboard for iPhone

Yes, very much the same size, very nice keys and a very nice, quality feel.
On/off is a physical slider switch on the right side of the keyboard and it'
rather stiff, there is no way it would move by itself or if pushed inside a
bag.
