I really appreciate the help and suggestions. I did purchase
Fantastical. So now it's just getting used to them both. But I am
looking forward to it.

if you go into settings, Calendar, you can set a default alert prior to your
appointment. This will be used for all new appointments after you have set a
default alert time.
You can edit your current ones and dig into the details to turn on alerts.
Using Siri is excellent and for reading your a

I would say that the calendar takes a little fiddling to get it to work, but it
is worth the trouble.
As for the notifications, go into notification settings and find the calendar;
you can change how the phone lets you know about alerts there.
My only frustration with the calendar is that focus
art:time-end:time format. The above looks verbose, but worth a
try.
