Are you talking about App updates?
There are two ways to check updates, my first choice is one finger triple tap
on the App store icon, then flick to updates and double tap.
Then toward the bottom of the screen you will first find previous updates or
something like that, then do a three finger

iMessages use Apple servers, so you can use them between two Apple
devices. They will use your data and not your text messaging plan. You
can use your Apple ID, and you don't need a cellular number.
