I don't know whether this will work, but have you tried changing the keyboard
to the one for the language you wish to spell check? It works for
autocorrection in Messages.

You add keyboard layouts by going to Settings/General/Keyboard and click the
Keyboards button. You'll find a list of keyboards already in use, followed by
Add new keyboard… Just add the ones you need.
