Thanks very much for the replies.
I'll take a close look at the iq6 or iq7.
Someone mention that you have some samples recording, can you please share
 the link again?
The Rode IXQ L mike is around $120USD, and is pretty similar with the iq5 in
 specs.

As far as for basic recording, honestly, i think the iphone mike and the
earpod's mike is good enough for everyday basic use. If not, you can look
around $50USD mark for things like the Tascam, Olympus, etc etc. But again,
those entry level mike are generally good for voice and speech recording, not
 some field recording.
Although, i have been using the internal mike for field recording, and live
performance. Of course, the quality is not great, but it is not overly
 horible either.

Wow. I really don't know about recording anything, and don't really need to
cover a wide area, like a hall or anything. I'm not doing any kind of
professional level recording. I just want something that sounds better than
the internal microphone on the iPhone. Which mic do you think would be a good
fit, then? I don't necessarily want to post process or anything like that.
Would the IQ mic be too much Mic, then? Do you think I would be better served
 with something a little simpler?

 Thanks,
 Ari

Ari, it is not the microphone that decides the drop box issue, it is the

For my taste, the IQ5 is a bit too much of a pinched sound. The 6 is XY and
the stereo spread is nice. The 7 is MS and if you use the HandiRec app from
Zoom, and have a way to post process. You can control the stereo spread and
even make it wider. I like the sound of the 7 best and it is the quietest.

DropVox? I know that that app supports stereo recording, but I don't know if
it matters what Mike you use.

Thanks for posting the info on your extender. I plan to get an OtterBox case

The 6 works normally with many other recording apps. So does the 5 and 7, but
they end up being in a very wide, almost too wide stereo mode unless you use
the app that Zoom makes.

When you get the cable, please let us know if it works.
That would be a nice solution.

Neal Ewers has sent several messages about the IQ 5 and 6 microphones and has
 done some audio samples.
If you search the archives for IQ 6 or IQ 5 you will probably find them.
These microphones are about $100 and do not work with many cases on iPhones,
but going by the samples Neal has provided, they are great microphones.

RE: external mic for iPhone/iPad

2015-04-21 Thread Neal Ewers
Richard, I have it already. It's not a cable. It is a plastic piece with a
female lightning connector on one end and a male lightning connecter on the
other. You obviously plug the microphone into the female connecter and plug the
male end into the phone. It has two pieces. The second piece is something that
goes around the male end and in a way, shortens the male end. It actually
doesn't shorten it, it just places an object in the path. This is in case you
have a shorter case and don't want the microphone just hanging out there in
space on a thin piece of plastic. You take it off for cases that are thicker.
And, by the way, I wish people hadn't started referring to plugs as male and
female. But, I guess people get the picture.

Thanks very much for the replies.

I'll take a close look at the iq6 or iq7.

Someone mention that you have some samples recording, can you please share the
link again?

The Rode IXQ L mike is around $120USD, and is pretty similar with the iq5 in
specs.

As far as for basic recording, honestly, i think the iphone mike and the
earpod's mike is good enough for everyday basic use. If not, you can look
around $50USD mark for things like the Tascam, Olympus, etc etc. But again,
those entry level mike are generally good for voice and speech recording, not
some field recording.

Although, i have been using the internal mike for field recording, and live
performance. Of course, the quality is not great, but it is not overly horible
either.

RE: external mic for iPhone/iPad

2015-04-21 Thread Neal Ewers
Ari, it is not the microphone that decides the drop box issue, it is the
recording app. Many of them will export to drop box.

For my taste, the IQ5 is a bit too much of a pinched sound. The 6 is XY and the
stereo spread is nice. The 7 is MS and if you use the HandiRec app from Zoom,
and have a way to post process. You can control the stereo spread and even make
it wider. I like the sound of the 7 best and it is the quietest.

2015-04-21 Thread Neal Ewers
Joanne, They will all work with most apps. The only thing is, the MS
microphones do not really do what they should do unless you use the Zoom App.
The IQ6, however, records just beautifully on any recording app I own.

I have not had any experience with the other microphones you mention.

Wow. I really don't know about recording anything, and don't really need to
cover a wide area, like a hall or anything. I'm not doing any kind of
professional level recording. I just want something that sounds better than the
internal microphone on the iPhone. Which mic do you think would be a good fit,
then? I don't necessarily want to post process or anything like that. Would the
IQ mic be too much Mic, then? Do you think I would be better served with
something a little simpler?

Re: external mic for iPhone/iPad

2015-04-21 Thread Joanne Chua

Of course, the quality is not great, but it is not overly horible
either.

 Thanks,
 Ari

For my taste, the IQ5 is a bit too much of a pinched sound. The 6 is XY and
the stereo spread is nice. The 7 is MS and if you use the HandiRec app from
Zoom, and have a way to post process. You can control the stereo spread and
even make it wider. I like the sound of the 7 best and it is the quietest.

Is it better to buy the IQ 5 or the IQ 6? Also, will these Mike's work with
DropVox? I know that that app supports stereo recording, but I don't know if
it matters what Mike you use.

Thanks for posting the info on your extender. I plan to get an OtterBox case
for my future iPhone 6, so having the extender is important.

I have ordered an extender which actually now makes the microphone work

Neal Ewers has sent several messages about the IQ 5 and 6 microphones and
 has done some audio samples.
If you search the archives for IQ 6 or IQ 5 you will probably find them.
These microphones are about $100 and do not work with many cases on
iPhones, but going by the samples Neal has provided, they are great
 microphones.

RE: External mic for iPhone

2015-03-17 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, You can do what you want with the IQ 6. You can’t physically separate the
microphones, but you can change angles, and you can place two people so each is
facing one particular microphone. You can do the same thing with the other Zoom
microphones as well, but the thing I don’t like about inexpensive MS
microphones is that under some circumstances, the stereo image sounds out of
focus such that it sounds like people are not coming from the place they really
are. XY Microphones do not have this problem.
