Yeah, Joshua, that might not be a bad idea, worth a try, because I am fast to 
close apps and lock phone anyway.

This is not a solution to the autolock, but why not just press the power button 
when you set it down?
You may want to make sure all the background activities are off, the app 
switcher is clear, and reboot the phone.
Or, call Apple Accessibility and ask them to do a screen share with diagnostics.
