Hopefully it will expand to other areas and apps, like Music and
Messages, since I can see benefits in those too. This sure beats the
pinch gesture though, as well as the quadruple tap to copy the last
spoken bit of text.

This I'd use, the others I don't.

'Bout time! but better late than never. I never did do any good with the
pinch gesture.
mBraille was the only other place with this kind of sensible text selection.
Thanks, BobH.

Ditto. I can't wait to tell my friend about it and even show her. One of the
things we could never manage was the pinch gesture, especially me due to my
limited coordination. So the text selection is a big plus for me and hope it
will be for my friend.

I must have missed the first message in this thread which I trust
describes how to perform this new way of text selection. Can someone
describe it for me?
Thanks,
Jeff

Make sure that Text Selection is selected in the rotor settings.
Then, turn the rotor when you are in any text box, reading an Email, on the web
with Safari, composing text, anywhere like that it seems; turn the rotor to
Text Selection and flick up or down to set the unit you want to select.

Ha! I just tried it, and what do you know? It worked! I always thought the edit
option had to be present in the rotor in order to be able to select text. Yay!
I'm glad I was wrong! I am really looking forward to the new way of selecting
text in iOS 9, though. I can do the unpinch/pinch gesture,
That quadruple tap only copies the last block spoken by VoiceOver.

Exactly what I do. Or simply select the text then copy it to the clipboard.
That new feature may be more convenient for others though.

A 3 finger quadruple tap will copy a block of text to the clipboard.

I don't have a phone running IOS 8 where I can test this any more, but
I'm pretty sure I used to select text from things like web pages in
Safari and paste it into LinkedIn updates. You'd have to use the pinch
gesture first to highlight some text and then the copy option would show

Yes, if you could do that crazy pinch gesture with reliability, which I never
could, you could copy stuff off of webpages. This is way easier in my opinion.

In earlier versions of iOS, before nine, though, I don't think you can select
text outside of an edit field. Correct me if this is wrong.

In 8, when I have to copy garbage strings, I have VO speak it and then the 3
finger quad tap, but you often get extra junk with it as well that you don't
want in there because it literally copies what VO spoke.
