Re: question about setting up OnCallDefender app found on Applevis

2015-12-18 Thread Brent Harding
You can, if you know the street address where the issue is, but when all you
only know the parallel street and the streets ahead and behind, that isn't an
address they can use. From what I read, the location is something the operator
has to specifically request and can take up to 6 minutes for the phone company
to process, and it likely uses whatever they have as opposed to the
GPS/location services in the phone. With an app like this, the phone already
sends the GPS info when you set it off, taking the waiting game and potentially
less accuracy issues out of the equation. I did get an email from their
support, and they said that the app doesn't work with any OS the iPhone 6 could
run, but the app store compatibility list lists them all 4S, or maybe 3GS and
above. That is probably because devs can't say 4S and older in their listing to
make it unavailable to newer phones. I would assume that this app absolutely
requires iOS 7 and less.

Subject: question about setting up OnCallDefender app found on Applevis

I found this personal safety app on AppleVis called OnCallDefender. It is
like a panic button for your phone that lets some kind of monitoring company
know you need help in those situations one hopes will never happen. I may
potentially be starting a job some time in the new year if all goes well, and
walking home in the dark around 9 at night might be part of what I have to do
for awhile until the earlier shift opens up. . My apartment is only around 4
street crossings away from there, but safety is something I think about, but
I'm not worried enough to say no to the offer if it comes my way. I tried to
create an account and subscribe to this thing, presumably through an iTunes
subscription, but all I get is the alert sound with the screen staying the
same. In looking at the app store entry, the app hasn't been updated since
2010, and it is advertised to be compatible with phones of that era. I am
running iOS 9.2 on an iPhone 6. I tried doing the explore by touch thing to try
to get to the fields to fill out to no avail. I have also tried restarting VO
to get it to refresh its model of the screen, and that did nothing either. How
can I make this thing let me sign up? Even though their site is still online, I
have a small suspicion they killed it since the Applevis review was posted last
year. Are there any similarly priced services with apps that are accessible
that are still providing this kind of service? The demo part I did see looks
tricky to actually activate because getting a tripple tap passed through VO
correctly reminds me of the child-proof containers we are probably all glad we
couldn't open as kids.

Try the app called Blue Light, which sounds like it does the same thing,
allowing you to contact the nearest EMS services. When I got it it was free but
there may be a subscription now. The app is very accessible, though there may
be more exploring involved in the initial sign-up screens.

Good luck,

2015-12-16 Thread Brent Harding
Yes, I hope everything does work out. As for the app, it is a scary thought
that if they did go defunct, people may be paying the automatic subscription
and they won't realize that the service won't work until they have to set
one off for real. The impression I get is that the demo function basically
tests for cellular/network connectivity and GPS, but it doesn't raise a test
alarm. I might have to look for something else. They could also be only
allowing current subscribers to continue with it or the newer iOS versions
since 2010 could've broken parts of it.
