indeed the algorithm used in vmtknetworkextraction is the one described in
chapter 3.
It's a very heuristic algorithm, which is not theoretically guaranteed to
preserve the same topology (in terms of Euler number) of the surface and not
guaranteed to produce centerlines that lie inside
