As the subject indicates, I've been trying to run the viewer on the
client windows machine.
But it says simply,
Failed to connect to the server.

Known issue with RD. VNC (Free Version) cannot connect to a Windows machine

According to Wes with RealVNC, the next freeware version to come out will

Hi
When I connect to a server with VNC, I can't open any programs with JAVA
applets. When I connect with Terminal Services, there's no problem.
We're using Windows 2000 server SP 4
Any suggestions ?

Thank you all for your responses.
I should say that I just used Add/Remove Programs as an example. I use
WMI/VBS/etc to do a lot of things remotely. But I was trying to see if VNC
could help me with some things I haven't figured out yet. The specific
thing that prompted me to ask was the SMS
Hey Salvatore,
everything after the exec command doesn't get executed because the running
process is replaced with the process started with the exec command.
Try this:
#!/bin/sh
unset SESSION_MANAGER
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic
I hate to ask this as I realize this is an overasked question - but I have

2000 client, but to no avail.

John is right about the incompatibility between Remote Desktop and VNC,
and VNC not working until you reboot the system after using Remote
Desktop. If you are working remotely this can be a real pain since Remote
Desktop does not give you the option of shutting down/restarting the
machine when

Steven,
What happens when you try to run Java on a local terminal (as opposed to a
user of terminal services)? That's probably a closer analogy to what
happens with VNC than TS (even though TS and VNC - I use both - perform
similar functions).

Thanks, Jerry. Can I do this from the command line in Debian's

The other option is to Remote Desktop in to the PC, and at the command
prompt, issue:
TSCON 0 /DEST:console
This will kick you out of your session, and reset it to the console. At
this point, you may now control the console using VNC.
Thanks to joerg for this solution. It sure beats
