I wish someone at VNC.org would actually produce a step by step. It took me
forever... and I mean months.
So here is one situation I explained to someone. Maybe this will help for a
small home network.

you may do this with the automatic IP (called DHCP - Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocal). However, if the other person is connecting to
you, they go to the server and enter the IP address you tell them. The
address may be obtained using Firefox browser addon called MYIP or by
going to the web site http://www.checkip.com/. Give them the address to
enter into their VNC Server-Add new client.
A second way to to this is to get a fixed IP address through a free
service such as http://www.dyndns.com/

Therefore, each computer needs to be set up in the router with port
forwarding to different displays.
VNC uses display 0 as the default and send through port 5900. Display 1
is port 5901 an so on.
On the router (for the laptop 192.168.0.3) set up port forwarding to
port 5901 and on the laptop set vnc to use display 1.
On the router (for other computer 192.168.0.xx) set up port forwarding
to port 5900 and on the coputer set vnc to use diplay 0.
Should now work.

I can connect from my desktop using the VNC viewer and entering
192.168.0.3.

cannot
connect to my laptop. Is this because both of the PCs are behind my
router
a Netgear DG834G Version 3. I am sure I have opened the necessary
ports
5900 and 5800 (also 5950 and 5850 which is how I set up the server
on my
laptop).
Any advise would be really appreciated. This seems an amazing
product,
especially for the cost, and means I don't have to upgrade my friends
PCs to
XP Pro J
