I think it's necessary to move to the git version rather than stick with

Sadly, no it's not. It's looks like it's SVN from about a year ago,
which is fairly outdated now.
However, Kali is an Ubuntu derivative and it's much easier to set up the
latest git on it if you're so inclined: Just follow the directions on
the w3af page for Linux, and when you try to run w3af it

./w3af_console it says that I require 2.7. I know i've got it installed
using pythonbrew. Since running a python command shows the version
