I am more interested in your thoughts on coping with such a freeze and
whether you have any suggestions on a course of action other than shutting
down by means of the power? I have always been loathe to shut down by
turning off the power.

It is for this reason I am loathe to shut down in this way but in practice
there is a point where it may be necessary.
As a matter of interest the update of my iMac, which has many more programs on
it and is more likely to contain some forgotten rogues, went without a hitch.
