Slightly OT - Broadband question

2009-03-29 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Greetings All

Your off shore member in Mauritius is moving to Hobart and I would
appreciate some advice regarding broadband lines.

I am looking at Internode so if anyone uses them can you let me know
if you like them or not.

I am totally unable to decide whether we need a land line or not.
What are the pros / cons of having one?We do all our international
calls via Skype and have mobile phones.

Please feel free to send your advice off list if you consider this too
OT.

Kind regards

Wendy

Yes Wendy Internode are great. Great service, rates and reliability,
and they know Macs.
We don't have ADSL2 because I'm happy with the speed and download
limits with ADSL, particularly considering the price difference. Also
it's only just become available here in Geraldton.

Maybe you could get ADSL2+ naked for a better price as we still have
Telstra land line.

We do have voip phone one way with Engin at around $9.95 a month with
10c untimed local and STD calls and really good international and
mobile rates too. You might consider voip 2 way with them and have no
land line connection. We use voip to call out STD and landline for
incoming calls. Also our Telstra plan gives us 50 free local calls
which covers a lot of calls I make for school business, phoning for
relief teachers. I could pay a lot less per month and forego the 50
call bonus - probably I should consider it too.

IPod query

2009-03-29 Thread Peter Curtis

Hi all
Due to my own stupidity I have had to reinstall a system on an eMac. I
didn't lose anything of any importance fortunately, except for my
wife's songs loaded on iTunes. When she attaches the iPod it warns her
if she continues it will wipe it!
Is there any way we can reinstall the songs from the iPod to the eMac
without physically doing it with all the cd's?

Any clues much appreciated.

Peter

Hello Peter,

What version iTunes OSX are you using?

Is this iTunes completely empty ... no songs?

Are sure your iTunes Library is not in Home Music - iTunes folder?

You can use iPod Rip.
It will not only copy all the music from your iPod to your Mac —
including music purchased from the iTunes Music Store and audiobooks —
but do so while maintaining the playlists you’ve created.

http://www.ipodrip.com/

Put control of the iPod back in your hands with the ultimate iPod
companion. iPodRip supports recovering your songs and playlists,
playback of audio files and much more.

Another Application that is very good is Senuti:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23390

NB: To STOP iTunes from auto-syncing with the iPod:
While connecting the iPod to your computer, be sure to hold down the
Command + Option keys to prevent iTunes from auto-syncing with your
iPod.
If you don't do so, iTunes may automatically erase the contents of
your iPod!

2009-03-29 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi, the internode naked sounds like the right sort of plan, you sound
like you don't need the landline, and voip works well instead. In
fact, I can't tell that we don't have a landline except that we don't
have a fax, and we don't pay for the rent. We are with iinet on a
naked plan, and it certainly is good value. cheers, Susan.

Re: Slightly OT - Broadband question

2009-03-29 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Wendy,

Like Reg we are very happy with internode.

Like Reg we were limited to standard ADSL down here in Albany when we signed
up and are still happy with the speed/download limits.

Internode have rolled out some new plans and some are due to be available in
Albany soon - so I may look at that again later.

We also kept the Telstra landline (no option when we signed up) but dropped
down to the cheapest plan (now $20.95/month) which let us keep our existing
phone number (for incoming calls).

We went with Internodes own Nodephone for outgoing VOIP - slightly more
expensive calls at 18c untimed local and STD calls but no monthly fee and
since our monthly phone bill is nearly always less than $9.95 anyway we come
out ahead. If we made more phone calls I'd look at some of the other cheaper
offerings - but since we would only save $2 or $3 I like to keep the VOIP
with Internode.

Since we have one cordless phone unit (4 handsets) plugged into the VOIP and
another cordless phone unit (2 Handsets) plugged into the landline we also
get the advantage? That if one of us has phoned out (always on VOIP) and
someone else calls us they come through on the landline and can be answered
without affecting the outgoing VOIP call. However, if there is no outgoing
call, incoming calls can be picked up on any of the handsets since the VOIP
modem passes the incoming landline calls through to the phone (this will
depend on the type of modem you have).

Hobart will be quite a climate change from Mauritius - I hope you are
planning to make the move in (Hobart) summer!

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Bob
It's actually my second computer that my wife uses to play games with,
nothing on it really other than her iPod stuff and a few photo's and
some emails. I didn't even think of backing it up for that! I've been
severely scolded! and I can assure you that it will never happen

except for my wife's songs loaded on iTunes. When she attaches
the iPod it warns her if she continues it will wipe it!
Is there any way we can reinstall the songs from the iPod to the
eMac without physically doing it with all the cd's?

Any clues much appreciated.

Hello Peter,

What version iTunes OSX are you using?

Is this iTunes completely empty ... no songs?

Are sure your iTunes Library is not in Home Music - iTunes folder?

You can use iPod Rip.
It will not only copy all the music from your iPod to your Mac —
including music purchased from the iTunes Music Store and
audiobooks — but do so while maintaining the playlists you’ve
created.

http://www.ipodrip.com/

Put control of the iPod back in your hands with the ultimate iPod
companion. iPodRip supports recovering your songs and playlists,
playback of audio files and much more.

Another Application that is very good is Senuti:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23390

NB: To STOP iTunes from auto-syncing with the iPod:
While connecting the iPod to your computer, be sure to hold down
the Command + Option keys to prevent iTunes from auto-syncing with
your iPod.
If you don't do so, iTunes may automatically erase the contents of
your iPod!

Cheers,
Ronni

We conclude you did not have a backup !

With Hard drives as cheap as they now are you would do well to
acquire one

and at least backup your users folder .

I can recommend Superduper for this : that way you will always have
a relevantly

recent copy of all your files .

Bob

PS : Some of the external hard drives like WD units do not
play nice with Mac .
A separate enclosure with a WD hard drive installed works great . I
have an esata

connection on G5 Power Mac that boots with no problems.

Did you highlight (click once) each of the Mailboxes first before you
 chose MailboxRebuild?

No. I shift-clicked the lot. I have now done them individually but,
apart from a couple of minor exceptions, there was no evidence of
movement, starting, running or finishing the actions. So I assume
 they have been rebuilt.

Shift-clicking all the Mailboxes is fine if you only have one account.
If you don't have a lot of messages in the Mailbox the rebuild is very
quick. The messages disappear and return quickly in the Message List
 window.

If you have more than one account, the inbox, drafts, sent will have
an arrow you need to click it to open then click on each mailbox
 then chose MailboxRebuild

Inbox had a small zigzag-like marker which disappeared on clicking
but there was no marker on 'Sent'. Whenever I click on 'Sent',
'Rebuild' fades to grey and is unavailable.

That zigzag (squiggle) beside you Inbox meant that the email account
was Offline (not connected to the mail server).

 3. Did you try Quit Mail, navigate to ~/Library/Mail and drag the
file Envelope Index to the Trash. When you launch Mail again, it'll
tell you that you need to reimport all your messages (just as it
when Ian upgraded to Leopard), it will recreate his envelope index
from scratch, but he won't lose any data.?

I can't remember if this was done.

Please do this as soon as possible. I assumed you had already done
this as I suggested this a few days go.
It doesn't actually Import all your messages, it just creates a new
 envelope index from scratch.

I want you to do this because your envelope index‹a special database
that Mail uses to keep track of which messages are in which mailboxes‹
and the other files that Mail uses to catalogue messages I think has
 become severely damaged.

What I call the subsidiary mailboxes are all back, seemingly OK but Inbox
and Sent are empty. Inbox is still offline.

Did you run the OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update?

 No.

Wouldn't hurt to download and run it.

 I'll try it.

It perhaps would be easier for us to follow you, if you replied to the
message you are actually referring to.

My apologies for trying to answer two emails with one. I'll do it
correctly in future, starting with this one.

No apologies necessary Ian, it just gets a bit hard to follow a thread
especially when it lasts for a few days with lots of messages.

Please do number 3. and let us know how you get on.

Done. Incidently, what is the protocol with long threads? Should one send
the whole lot back when commenting about only one or two questions as I have
done here.

Do you mean all your Mailboxes (under On My Mac) are back and all your

To see your Inbox Sent Mailboxes:
Make sure your account is still in Mail. Go to Preferences Accounts
 check your Westnet Account details.

Firewire to USB converter -OT

2009-03-29 Thread Michael Hawkins
I'm coaching a group of 50 year old and up rowers. My digital video camera
uses Firewire. That's good for when I connect to my Mac, but I want to be
able to connect the video camera to a portable DVD player (Dick Smith) so
while we're still out on the water I can show the crew what they're doing.
Aging eyes and failing eyesight means that more than half the crew can't see
the screen on the camera.

The problem is that the portable DVD player has AV out (rca single plug to
white, red, yellow rca minplugs) and usb port in. Is a cable available that
I can plug into the video camera (small firewire connector) and the portable
DVD player (standard sized usb port).

Alternatively the camera has red white yellow AV out. Would it be possible
to modify the AV out port on the DVD player so it takes AV in?

Thanks,

Michael Hawkins.
