Hi everyone, about to lash out on an iPad2 but which model?
I believe that the next iPad/ iPhone software update will include a data
hotspot enabling both our iPhone4s to allow data and Internet access- if so I
would only need a wifi version, correct?
Apparently iPads are great for children
This is a bit nerdy, but I'm getting sick of my machine acting like
treacle whenever TimeMachine decides to work. Is there any way that I
can permanently force TimeMachine to have a lower priority when
accessing CPU cycles?
I guess this will have to be some unix thing, because I don't know
Hi Brian,
You have correctly identified the two independent questions when choosing an
iPad model.
a) 3G or WiFi only?
b) How much memory?
By the way, a number of articles have touted how children with Autism benefited
from an iPad. That will probably require that you choose software
Thank you Carlo for you iPad experiences,

Hi Rob,
You are right that it is a UNIX thing that is not currently officially
supported by Apple. Here is a blog post that tells the unix commands to both
lower the priority of Time Machine and run backups less frequently that every
hour.
Don't forget that only the 3G version of the iPad has a GPS receiver. For me
this is the deal-breaker for the wifi-only model.
The possibility of having GPS-enriched turn-by-turn, off-road and topographical
maps the size of the old UBD instead of postcard size is very compelling.
Also, the
Rob, using the 'nice' option seems a pretty good approach, and all you need
to do is check and see whether your Time Machine backups complete normally.
The nice command is a common Unix utility from way back, and simply sets a
process to operate at a lower priority that other processes. Not a
Yes. Good point about the GPS, Mart.

Hi Glen,
Tucked away in a footnote of the article previously posted are instructions to
Nice to Time Machine process. It uses a launchd option file. Here is the quote:
You could also add a Nice key to the .plist file (e.g.

Note.
You only need the 3G to be turned on in the iPad. You don't need to actually
have a SIM card in it.
The reason is that the GPS functionality is built into the 3G chip.

Hi Guys,
I have finally bought my first iMac! I am pretty familiar with the Mac anatomy
but is there any smart tips or shortcuts I might need?
Also, if there are any apps or programs that manage homework that would be
great (just started high school)
And I promise, no more windows questions!

Hi Adrian,
What version of OS X are you running and where did you get the driver? I
believe the HP deskJet F370 may be an unsupported printer. Reading this
discussion posting about the F380, it may be possible to get it working using
Linux drivers and GhostScript. Unfortunately, this will not
Hi Adrian
If you are running 10.6.6 you will have access to the App store, there are
quite a few things on there that may help with
homework. Some may be free and some will chargeable. You do need an iTunes
account though!

Hi all, it is very easy to turn the iphone 4 into a personal hotspot under
preferences, general, network. You have a choice of USB, wireless and
bluetooth. Cheers, Susan.

huge culprit with iTunes and App store, which I am grateful for US established
account saves huge dollars. Adobe same huge differences when recognises Au.

Roxio don't offer the upgrade price to Australia. You can only ever get the
full retail version in Australia. So I *believe* (and I could be wrong), that
when you change the country it then changes it.
