iMac Update?

2012-11-27 Thread Daniel Kerr
More info for those following the iMac updates…..
http://www.macrumors.com/2012/11/26/new-imacs-to-go-on-sale-as-early-as-tomorrow/

I think the main working is near the end of that,…
/quote
Supply is extremely limited so please contact your sales team for more
information
/end quote

If the 21 becomes available tomorrow, and there is very limited stock,…(plus
given what couriers are like at the moment with the lead up to Christmas), I
still have a feeling it will be early next year before reasonable supply.
And the 27 is due to be released December. If it followed the same time
frame that would be about the 27th December,…lol ;o)
They might release it 20th, and it would still be a short time frame to try and
get it before the end of year.

Oh well, time will tell,….

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: Consolation from Telstra

2012-11-27 Thread Vladimir James
Ronni,

Thanks for the links and your thoughts.

I spent close to three hours on the phone to Telstra today, negotiating for an
updated modem. Spoke to four different people; spent most of the time getting a
cramp in my arm from holding the phone and waiting (I won't be long; please
hold the line.). I refused to accept that bringing the modem to the Telstra
shop was a reasonable solution. What-the-hell! I'm an octogenarian; driving and
walking are major efforts now, and the nearest shop is about 40km away.
Besides, Telstra knew I was a Mac user when it sold me the modem.

The final result: I'll receive an updated modem for about 25% of the usual
cost, which is $299. However, I had to sign up for a 12 month plan — I've been
on a month-to-month for many years. I'm satisfied that it was the best I could
do, and I can assure you, getting this result was no piece of cake.
Persistence, patience, rational arguments ... and luck.

Telstra is touting its 'new' approach to service. There is no doubt that
someone in Telstra is trying, but they've got a long way to go. I won't know
how reasonable this result is until I try the updated modem.

Cheers,

Vlad

Bigpond are saying that firmware can only be upgraded using a Windows PC, as
firmware upgrades are all .exe files and thus cannot be upgraded from Mac,
Linux, BSD or Unix computers, unless you run Windows in a virtual machine or
 similar environment.

So you need Windows installed in Parallels Desktop or Boot Camp or similar on
your Mac to upgrade the firmware.

Re: Consolation from Telstra

2012-11-27 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Vladimir,

Did you download the Firmware file 3G21WB_FW_Update_Tool_R22.zip from the
link I sent in my previous reply?

When you download the file unzips and you have a folder titled
3G21WB_FW_Update_Tool_R22

1. Open that Folder and inside is a Data folder
2. Open the Data folder and you will find the MacBinary file -
3G21WB-J301-402TBP-T01_R22.bin
3. You should be able to do the update as intended using the normal update
function from the web interface.

You must have the Modem connected to your Mac via the Ethernet cable, log into
the Modem's Web interface and update the firmware.

Cheers,
Ronni

I don't have to slide to answer if my phone is connected to Bluetooth in my
car. I do have to accept the call by pressing the button on my steering wheel.
You can have the phone itself anywhere in the car, you don't actually touch it.
Mine is usually out of my reach, yet I can answer calls.

Heh Heh…

Most of us don't have a car that was built these days Susan. :-)

I guess Pedro's link is useful for the rest of us.

you haven't seen someone use this type of system before, every cheap little
model of car has Bluetooth built in these day, its not a luxury. It doesn't
matter whether you have an iPhone or some other brand, so long as you can
pair it with your car's Bluetooth. The pairing happens automatically each
time you are in the car with your ignition on and the phone on, it's
 absolutely seamless.

What Hands Free device are you using in your car?
I use a TomTom GPS which has hands free connection to my iPhone.

I don't touch my iPhone, and my iPhone has screen locked with a Passcode.

SPAM from Apple? Fwd: Please verify that we have the right address for you

2012-11-27 Thread Alex
Hello Wamuggians

my wife received the email below I would like to confirm whether it
could be spam/malicious? She did try to download a weather app from
the app store the previous night for her iPhone 4S, which she
cancelled as it was taking a long time did not seem to be behaving
properly, so this may be an Apple communication related to this.
Seeing as the principle is that one does not click on links from
bank sites to verify one's details, I thought this should fall in
the same category.

Many thanks in advance for your input,

Cheers, Alex

 Thank you.

You’ve taken the added security step and provided a rescue email
address. Now all you need to do is verify that it belongs to you.

The rescue email address that you gave us is glendan...@tm.org.au.
Just click the link below to verify, sign in using your Apple ID and
 password, then follow the prompts.

 Verify Now

The rescue email address is dedicated to your security and allows
Apple to get in touch if any account questions come up, such as the
need to reset your password or change your security questions. As
promised, Apple will never send any announcements or marketing
 messages to this address.

When using Apple products and services, you’ll still sign in with
your primary email address as your Apple ID.

 It’s about protecting your identity.
Just so you know, Apple sends out an email whenever someone adds or
changes a rescue email address associated with an existing Apple ID.
If you received this email in error, don’t worry. It’s likely
someone just mistyped their own email address when creating a new
 Apple ID.

Hi Alex,

Apple are very chatty lately, I've been receiving this email also.
You can verify your email address by logging in at http://appleid.apple.com/ by
manually typing that address into your web browser, rather than clicking the
link in the email.

Also read the support article below, which includes details about verifying
your AppleID:

Re: Screen symptoms

2012-11-27 Thread Rick Armstrong
Hi Jennifer,
I not sure if this helps, but I have seen some iMac screen panels for sale on
eBay and could understand why someone would be selling these (just the screen
panels). Perhaps, it may be cheaper to buy the panel from eBay and get the
wizard technician to replace it. I think a replacement panel from Apple may be
exorbitant.

time. Now it has shown a frozen bluey grey screen on start up this morning
(normal one after being powered off), froze again yesterday, has shown on
one occasion on start up a full transitory white screen with small
rectangular dashes and there have been a couple of occasions when, on
opening an application, a small version of this white widow with dashes has
appeared very briefly. I repair permissions after updating.

The multi coloured wheel also seems to appear more frequently.

Should we be thinking of more technical help or are we heading towards
replacement? The computer is 5 years old, but when working well, does
everything we need and so we have no wish to upgrade unless our present one
 is a hopeless cause.

My apologies if I am asking an impossible question.
 Regards,
 Jennifer

Re: Screen symptoms

2012-11-27 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Jennifer,

Just a very quick reply as heading out to meet with a client (if I don't get
blown away in this terrible weather we are experiencing down south).
Do you have any external drives attached to your iMac when you startup and
experience the screen freezes?
If so: Unmount the external drive/s (Command-E) disconnect the external
drive/s and see if the freezes stop happening on startup.

Have you 'Repaired The Drive'?
You need to boot from the install disc and repair the hard drive using the
Utilities Disk Utility on the disc.
Every force shutdown usually damages the drive's directory.

I would also suggest you run the Apple Hardware Test.
How to Perform hardware test: Apple Knowledgebase Article HT1509
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
then:
• run the quick test (takes a few seconds)
• run the extended test (can take several hours)

Let us know the results of the Hardware Test.

This could be Hardware, could be the Display / Graphics, could be software
related... very hard to give help without seeing the iMac and running some
tests.

I have to rush now, I'll be back later today but someone else might be able to
help you in the interim.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Screen symptoms

2012-11-27 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Jennifer

Sorry to hear it's still doing the same. I've sent you an off list email as
well.
But yes, as Ronni mentioned, try running it without anything externally plugged
in (bar keyboard and mouse). Run that and see how goes.
But at a guess I'd probably think it may be hardware related as well.
Will follow it up with you and hopefully we can work through the issues to get
it all sorted.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: Screen symptoms

2012-11-27 Thread Jennifer Lefroy
Thank you everyone. That gives me quite a few things to work on during
this stormy day. I think it might be a couple of days before I can report
back from the various things to try, but I will do them all and see what
happens.

Don't get blown away - at least not literally!

Jennifer

 Hi Jennifer,
I not sure if this helps, but I have seen some iMac screen panels for sale
on eBay and could understand why someone would be selling these (just the
screen panels). Perhaps, it may be cheaper to buy the panel from eBay and
get the wizard technician to replace it. I think a replacement panel from
 Apple may be exorbitant.
