Re: Running a virtual OSX machine in parallels.
Aaah, OK, Ronni. Thanks for pointing out the flaw in my plan ;o) So it looks like sticking with SL as the main OS until I have updated/replaced any non compatible Software. Option 1) still looks like a goer though. I already have Parallels - so the upgrade to version 9 is $50 and, given that Mavericks is free, that sounds fair enough to try out Mavericks. I may wait a little while to get a few more jobs out of the way and let the dust settle on the new release ;o) Another option for me would possibly be installing Mavericks on a separate partition I have a partition that currently is barely used and could easily be cleared out. Then I presumably could boot into either system to see how it went. Do you see any issues with this approach? Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Hi Neil, What are the details of your Mac? Comments and another couple of options below in situ. On 27 Oct 2013, at 2:11 pm, Neil Houghton n...@possumology.com wrote: Aaah, OK, Ronni. Thanks for pointing out the flaw in my plan ;o) So it looks like sticking with SL as the main OS until I have updated/replaced any non compatible Software. Another Option: Do a Bootable SuperDuper Clone of your Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 onto an external drive and after testing you can boot from the SD Clone. Eject the Clone. Then download the Mavericks installer from the App store and upgrade to Mavericks. Option 1) still looks like a goer though. I already have Parallels - so the upgrade to version 9 is $50 and, given that Mavericks is free, that sounds fair enough to try out Mavericks. I guess so, but I have not heard any reports of anyone running Windows Mavericks in Parallels. Then I presumably could boot into either system to see how it went. Do you see any issues with this approach? As long as the Partition is Formatted 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' uses GUID Partition Table Partition Map Scheme... I can't see any issues. This option would possible be better than installing Mavericks in Parallels 9. The drawbacks of virtualisation is the cost and performance. The advantage of partitioning the hard drive is that the operating system will be more responsive and you’ve not spent any money on a third-party application in order to do it. Re: iPad with Internet ?
Just beware. I used a 12 month prepaid card in a 4G modem in my camper van on a recent trip. I ran the ipad, iphone and 2 macbooks of the wireless network generated by the modem. I was chewing through the quite limited download quota very quickly and it was costing a fortune. I had to carefully look at all the services running on the ipad and iphone. I recall that iCloud and Dropbox were the culprits, but there might have been others. So, check things out carefully when you first get the prepaid SIM. Did not notice an Update request Exactly what Mail Boxes are missing? Quite a lot of personal boxes, some that have not been used for some time but still contain material that I access from time to time. Do you have SMART MAILBOXES and every MAILBOX other than ON MY MAC No ON MY MAC (greyed) under MAILBOXES”? Don’t have any ‘Smart Mailboxes’ activated and all the existing mailboxes are under ‘MAILBOXES' When you place your cursor near ICLOUD or any of the MAILBOXES (greyed) that are showing... do you see 'Hide' to the right of it? None of the existing boxes are greyed and hovering seems to have no response. You can't Rebuild a Mailbox that is not showing, you have to select it to Rebuild. Re: Screen Grab on iPad mini
Hi Severin, If the Screenshot is not showing in Photos app, would indicate that the screenshot has not been taken. Is this happening every time you take a screenshot on your iPad? Press the 'On/Off' 'Home' buttons at the same time, then release both buttons at same time. You will see the screen 'flash' hear camera shutter sound. Open the app Photos Camera Roll Album... The screenshot should be there. Cheers, Ronni Sent from Ronni's iPad4 On 28 Oct 2013, at 11:53 am, Severin Crisp sevcr...@westnet.com.au wrote: That is my problem. I had to carefully look at all the services running on the ipad and iphone. I recall that iCloud and Dropbox were the culprits, but there might have been others. So, check things out carefully when you first get the prepaid SIM. I find the best way with Telstra is to pay for a year of access, rather than month by month. Unless you set it up to automatically renew each month. Otherwise, its a pain to remember and if you forget, you lose any left over credit from the previous month. The iPad does not use the same amount of data as a computer so it would be fairly easy to stay within a small amount of data for email and light surfing of the internet. cheers, Susan. I agree with Susan on this one. The Telstra 12 month prepaid plan works extremely well for an unsophisticated user like your friend's mother is likely to be. By unsophisticated I mean they are not going to be consuming large amounts of data by downloading music and movies. It will be pretty much just email and web browsing. Map on iPhone
I'm going travelling in NZ, and would like to use Maps in iPhone to find my way around. Will I need an internet subscription or mobile phone subscription in order to do that? or will it be as easy as putting the destination in Maps whilst connected, turning roaming off in my Australian Vodafone account? I want to avoid a huge bill.
