Re: [WAMUG] Computer shutting down

2022-06-02 Thread Daniel Kerr
Kernal Panic’s are always a bit of a hard one to work through sometimes,…as
they can be either software or hardware.
Given you’ve said it doesn’t do it when Time Machine is turned off, then it
could either be a) something in the Time Machine software or b) something with
the drive being used that Time Machine is talking to. As obviously if Time
Machine is turned off,…then it’s not attempting to talk to the drive.

Do you have the MyCloud Home plugged directly into the computer with USB or to
your modem with Ethernet?
Have you tried unplugging or removing the drive, then re-connect and see if
problem persists?
Also tried removing that drive from Time Machine completely then seeing if
using a different drive gives the same issue?

So could be a number of things, not necessarily just Time Machine software
itself…could be something else “along the chain” from it talking or attempting
a backup.

You could also run EtreCheck to see if it turns anything up. You can download
that from here -
https://etrecheck.com

This site also has some good tips to work through Time Machine issues as well -
https://tommyang.github.io/pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

Hope something there helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Hi there,
Yes turning off the Time Machine stops the crashing…but now what?

Re: [WAMUG] Computer shutting down

2022-06-01 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi Rosemary, message received.

The crash report seems a lot of gobbledygook. But actually when looking through
all the verbiage, I couldn’t see any relationship with Time Machine. Is it
possible for you turn off backups to disable that and see if that makes a
difference?

If the panic occurs at first start and you can’t get past that I am not sure
what next.

Regards

Pete

[WAMUG] Computer shutting down

2022-05-27 Thread Rosemary Spark
Anybody any suggestions? Crash report below

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
 Monterey 12.3.1

I think it might be related to TimeMachine backup to MYCloud Home as every
time I turn it on, it seems my computer dies.
Obviously, something is panicking but I don't know what.

Cheers
Rosemary Spark

Re: [WAMUG] computer - phone connectivity

2022-05-18 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi John.
Go to iCloud.com on your Mac.
Login using your Apple ID.

You should be able to set up Calendar from there.
And also add any devices.

Each device gets the same data from one source (iCloud).
So as long as they are all using iCloud they should all match.

I found it a bit fiddly (for Apple) to set up originally, but fine once done.
I can’t remember the fine details, but a little poking around and it should
work.

Thanks Tim. That is more than likely where my problem lies but the reference
to icloud leaves me completely befuddled. How do I check the icoloud settings?

Re: [WAMUG] computer - phone connectivity

2022-05-18 Thread Tim Law
John have you checked the settings in iCloud, AND in Calendar to make sure the
correct calendars are displaying and activated.

Might it be worth a good old, log out of iCloud and log back in again trick?

Best wishes for it.

[WAMUG] computer - phone connectivity

2022-05-18 Thread John Thompson
I am sure I have asked this question before but cannot find the response/s.

I have iPhone 13 mini and my Wife has iPhone 12 mini. Earlier this year I had
no problem with the 13 updating the Calendar from the computer entries but of
late, it does not. The 12 is a later purchase and has been a problem in this
area all along. Both computer and phone/s have been system updated so it
appears something in the latest updates has changed.

Can someone please give some options to rectify this problem?

Thank you and regards

Re: [WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-09 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Rosemary, a friend had this problem and it was due to a failing power supply
which had to be replaced. I also found this to be the solution to computer
restarts when I did a Google search.

Consider that you may not be able to solve the problem without taking it to a
technician.

Kind regards, Susan.

Re: [WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-09 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Rosemary

How do you have your Time Machine disk connected to the laptop?
Assuming it’s the machine you listed in your specs?
Do you have a hard drive connected directly to the laptop via a USB-C port? Or
is it a “normal USB” backup drive you’re using and you’re connecting it to the
laptop via some form of USB-C to “normal USB” adapter?

Which sort of drive is it? And did you try using a different hard drive
connected to the laptop to see if it will do a “new backup” to a completely
different external disk?

Unfortunately it could be a number of different things, so sometimes it’s a
matter of narrowing them down to which it could be causing the issue.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-09 Thread Tim Law
Hi Rosemary,

It’s really hard to understand what the problem is that you are trying to
resolve.

I think you are telling us that you now think your computer is okay, but you
think you have a problem with Time Machine.
You’ve told us that your time machine disk is supporting three computers.

What about buying a new back up disk just for the computer that you weren’t
having problems with but were using when you were having problems with Time
Machine.

Then connect the new disk to just that computer, let the backup process look
after itself and move on with life. I don’t know anything about how Time
Machine works on multiple computers to make any comments on what to do with the
backups for the other two computers, but it at least will progress your problem
solving.

Regards

Tim

My apologies. I mis understood your problem.

I didn’t realise your computer is now functioning correctly.

Stephen’s answer seems reasonable. I didn’t know time machine could back up
data from three computers to one external drive.

Then start from scratch.

But that depends on if you are happy to lose that data.

Re: [WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-03 Thread Rosemary Spark
Hi,
Not sure what you mean. What is was doing was shutting down and
re-starting by itself.
One complication is that the time machine is backing up 3 computers.
Cheers

Re: [WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-03 Thread Rosemary Spark
My computer has been randomly re-starting for months. A while back someone
(Ronni) suggested turning off the Time Machine to see if that made a
difference.
It did...no re-starts.
Hency my questions.

Disconnect your time machine and protect it from fiddling and temptation

It is your rescue line and might be your only connection to your former life.

Focus on getting the computer going. Does it restart if you hold the shift key
down?

Hi Rosemary.
I don’t understand the relationship between Mac not starting and erasing your
Time Machine backup ?

[WAMUG} computer re-starting continued

2021-06-03 Thread Rosemary Spark
OK. My computer kept re-starting. Very annoying
Finally got to testing.
Turned off Time Machine as someone suggested...now no re-starting.
Now what do I do?
If the files are corrupt, how do I fix? Do I delete the whole backup? if
so, how?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
Big Sur 11.4
