Re: A knotty question

2013-10-01 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Pat,

Good that another Restart and both Safari & Firefox are now showing the website
correctly.
A couple of things you could check in case this happens again.

1. Go to System Preferences > Network - select the connection you are using
(Wi-Fi or Ethernet), then click the Advanced button, then 'Proxies' check that
NOTHING is selected here.

If you made any changes, click the "OK" button and then click the "Apply"
button to make the changes permanent.
Close the Network window.

2. Then check you are using your ISP (iiNet) DNS Servers:
Primary 203.0.178.191
Secondary 203.215.29.191

In System Preferences > Network - Select your Connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet),
then click the Advanced button
then 'DNS' - under DNS Servers:

If you don't have the DNS server addresses, click on + & add 203.0.178.191,
then click on + again & add the secondary 203.215.29.191

Click "OK"
Then Click "Apply" button to make the changes permanent
Close the Network window.

If you made any changes, Restart your Mac.

Cheers,
Ronni

I just got back to my computer at 4 pm and restarted. I am using Mountain Lion
10.8.5, Safari 6.0.5 and Firefox 23.0.1. The article I was commenting on was
The new economic nationalism, where comments are now closed. Safari is
reporting 55 (mine is there), and Firefox also says the same, and they are now
identical, so I have no idea why the previous difference.

I'm still puzzled, because this morning was a restart also.

Thanks very much, David, Ronni and Daniel.

Pat

As Daniel suggests, this is most likely to be a cache problem. If so clearing
the caches in both browsers and trying again may well give you a consistent
result. To clear the cache in Safari (on my version 5.0.5 anyway) go to the
Safari menu and halfway down Empty cache. In Firefox (my version 3.6.13) it is
in preferences/network - clear now button.

The other place that old pages can get "stuck" is your ISP's proxy. There is
nothing that you can do about this as far as I know except to wait for it to
clear.

Hi Pat,

What version of Safari are you using.
What version of OS X are you running... Mountain Lion?

I have the same report as David, both Safari 6.0.5 & Firefox 21.0 showing and
reporting exactly the same.
So the problem I would suggest is with your installation of either Safari /
Firefox or OS X.

Have you restarted your computer, and still find both browsers not displaying
as they should, and what you have done to try and correct the problems?

Let us know details on versions etc and we will get back to you.

Cheers,

A knotty question

2013-09-30 Thread Pat
On and off, there have been mutterings that Safari browser isn't quite up to
scratch. I had hoped this was all in the past, but now I encounter a glaring
example.

I discovered long ago that the ABC website doesn't handle Safari well at all; I
was not able to post a comment using Safari. I could post using Firefox. I
wrote several letters to the ABC, suggesting that they bring their site up to
scratch. Eventually they did something, and now the problem is worse. I used to
be able to see and respond to their polls with Safari; now I can't.

But it gets worse. Last night, there was an opinion article that I wanted to
comment on, so I got out Firefox and did so. This morning, using Safari as
usual, I looked at the article and the comments: my comment was not there, and
the total of comments was 25.

So, fire up Firefox again, look at the site again. Firefox sees 54 comments,
mine among them.

I go back to Safari, refresh the page, and look again: still 25 comments.

What is going on? Is this purely a Safari problem? An ABC site problem? Or some
weird combination of both?

I suppose the simple answer is just to use Firefox, but I don't like its
interface and it is rather stupid in other ways. It would be nice to be able to
trust what Safari shows me, but it seems to be unreliable.

I don't really expect a solution from WAMUG, mainly just felt like venting -
sorry about that.

Thanks,
Pat
