Try TextWrangler, also from bare bones software. It does a lot of what
BBEdit does, and its free.

Plus many more, just try typing the above name in terminal which has
many preferences to accommodate ones one nuances.
The manual; type man with program name of choice.

To use TextEdit to edit html files.
You Will need to open TextEdit and goto its preference Menu Go to the
Open and Save tab Then when opening a file
Then tick the box next to ignore rich text Commands in HTML files
I also do use Taco HTML Edit from time to time
