Hi James, Disconnect the Time Machine backup Drive from your MacBook Pro. See if you can then shut down MBP as normal -  Shut Down If Time Machine was backing up when you forced a Shut Down, it could cause some corruption on the Time Machine backup. Get the Shut Down process sorted first,

I'd very much like help please. For the sake of running AppleWorks an Eudora my MacBook Pro late 2010 6,1 is running OS X 10.6.8 and will only shut down when the power button is held down. It won't from either the Apple's Restart or Shut Down. I have re-installed 10.6.8 and all updates,
