Hi Daniel
The iMac is mid 2011 / 27”, 2Gb Memory Modules 1333 MHz DDR3SDRAM.
If you can, I would like to order 2 x 2 Gb Memory Modules. I have 4 slots, 2 
are used at present.

You can “generally” get RAM for the iMac from most places. (good known brands 
can differ, but Samsung, Corsair etc).
It depends on exactly which 27” iMac it is as to which one you’re after, as 
there’s a lot around. (Some can be 1333MHz, 1600MHz, 1866MHz or 2400MHz). Also 
depends on how much you have in there and which slots are free.
I supply RAM to my clients also, so happy to price some up if you wanted. (just 
email me off list with some more info) and I’m happy to give you some ideas if 
you like.

I have recently contacted APPLE and asked about purchasing 2x 2Gb Memory 
Modules for my iMac 27”. APPLE inform me that I can’t purchase the Modules from 
them, so I am asking the ‘Group' if I can purchase the Modules elsewhere??

The 7200 and 7220 used different sorts or RAM. In fact, the wonderful  
(!) 7220 was unique in the RAM it required: no other Mac used the same  
sort. The 7200 used 168 pin 5V FP DIMMs, while the 7220 used 168 pin  
3.3V EDO DIMMs. It is NOT possible to use your 7200 RAM in a 7220. It  
doesn't do any damage - it just doesn't work. I know, after having  
been supplied with the incorrect RAM on several occasions when trying  
to upgrade clients' old 7220s well into the iMac age. Apple Australia  
(who are now out of the upgrade business , BTW) have been the only  
source of 7220-compatible RAM for some time. Now, not even they supply  
it.

has the Ram listed in their eshop outlet .  Note that they say the same  
RAM is used in 4400 Macs

7200 built from  1995 to  late 96
7220 was introduced  early 97 ( if there was a 200Mhz Mac built in 95 
I would have hocked my family in to slavery to buy one - as it was I 
had to wait till 97 to do that when the 7300/200 released at the same 
time as the 7220)


that said and all pedantry aside

If I recall they use the same RAM form  172 pin 3.3 volt DIMMS but 
that the 7220 needed faster memory - going by the tech site 60ns v's 
70 ns. If the chips in the 7200 are original apple stock they 
probably will be the older slower speed  of 70 ns otherwise try it 
and see if it is stable


Note that I think 7220 could only go to about 160Mb RAM  even with 
larger memory  and I think this is not an Aplle figure based on 
available chips at the time but an actual  hardware limitation 
(though my recollection is vague as I have only ever came across one 
or two 7220)

Be careful!  I've fried some DIMMs in the past getting caught with this
scenario.

The RAM the 7200//90 uses are 5v 168 pin FPM DIMMS (70ns) while the 7220/200
uses 168 pin 3.3 Volt EDO DIMMs (60ns).  So basically they are pin
compatible but not voltage compatible - Very bad design if you ask me.

Make sure you DON'T put the EDO RAM from the 7220 in the 7200 as this could
fry the motherboard.

I don't know whether putting the FPM DIMMS from the 7200 into the 7220 would
damage the logic board or the DIMM, but mixing 5v and 3v DIMMs doesn't sound
like a good idea to me!

Keith or someone should be able to give more details and make sure my info
is correct.

A (shudder) PC ram question

My brother in-law in Japan wanted some RIMM memory for his PC but 
tells me it is very expensive there and near impossible to get hold 
of. I am not familiar with this type so if anyone knows anything 
about it or where to buy some at a reasonable rate I'd be grateful.
