Personally I think it doesn't make much sense to target a specific version
number when you don't know how much steps are necessary to reach that
 version.
And I guess once trunk gets into a releasable state, it warrants the 3.0
version (but the KDE team used similar reasoning and got bitten...)

Anyway, regardless of the specifics for trunk, can we agree that 2.3 will
 _not_
be a trunk release, but the continuation of 2.2?

Looking at the roadmap, and everything else (trac...) it looks like
branch/2.2 will be re-branched to 2.3.

I still think that just the improved gfx alone in trunk is probably
the most major change that we have, that will have the biggest effect
on our userbase.

Current trunk could be 3.x, the next gen stuff 4.x.
New savegame format for 3.1, lua 3.2, ... and so on.

To bring this up again, I don't remember any serious objections, and mostly

etc. for continuing 2.2?

And when we announce that in a news, maybe we could also mention the new SVN
repo, since that wasn't really announced on the homepage.

IMHO, 3.0 should be the first release with new savegame and scripting
formats, because this will be a tough break with the past. Whether the

[Warzone-dev] Changing the version of 2.3 to 3.0?

2009-08-23 Thread bugs buggy
For trunk, we have allot of changes, and most of those are not really trivial.

I think when we tag trunk for a Alpha release, it should be 3.0, and not 2.3.

To me, 2.3 would be minor changes, and that don't bode well with what
has been done to trunk.

Any objections from changing the 2.3 milestone to be 3.0 instead?

2.2.x will be the last series that supports low end machines.
3.x will be the future, and work on mid range to higher end machines.

At least, that is how I see it. :)

What sort of changes? The only things I can think of are the terrain
renderer, a new power system, and a refactor of some netcode.

Regardless, I would indeed like a 3.0, mainly so we can backport other
important changes to a 2.3 release, for people without good renderers.

Both lua the new widget engine are also slated for that release, as
well as some other things.

Per's new savegame format? In any case, lots of stuff that will look quite
different from the current 2.x releases. I agree with 3.0 for trunk (and 2.3
for larger changes to 2.2 that might warrant increasing the minor version, like
fixing all that stuff that needs a new savegame version).

I do not want to spoil the party, but it just does not seem to be realistic
 to
have a release containing both of them soon.

Another good reason to keep some numbers for further non-trunk releases.
