It is entirely possible Opie didn't know how to write in the first grade. I
started first grade in 1969 in a rural school in Oklahoma and we were just
learning how to write our letters by tracing the dotted lines in the old chief
tablets. Compared to today, my daughter is in 2nd grade and has
