Hubby and I watched the Ted Koppel special, and though I agree with Rick
concerning the political infusion,
I didn't think the show overall was too bad.  Of course, I didn't think it
was too good either...

Mr. Koppel is obviously not a huge fan, and that right there says a lot.
If you didn't watch the show during the years it was on,
you won't grasp the impact it had on America during the '60's.

I know there will be some folks watching the Mayberry special who just
don't "get it", but there will be many more who will, and
with a visit to Mt. Airy will grasp something that makes the world a little
better,

In reference to the CBS story…
I had to post this on my Facebook page, I was so embarrassed for promoting it … 
So I apologize for promoting the CBS Sunday Morning news that featured Mt Airy. 
WHAT A DUMB TRICK!   He gets on the trolley and asks about politics.   
POLITICS!  In MAYBERRY!  He just couldn’t enjoy the simpler time and small town 
atmosphere without stirring the political and racial pot!  Really?  EVERY 
SINGLE TIME I go to Mt Airy, I see white and black fans, folks that look like 
me AND bikers, young folks, older folks, tattooed folks, Northern folks, 
Southern folks, blue collar, white collar, all walks of life. Never ever is 
politics or race discussed. But trust me , there are plenty of African American 
fans. And for the “ rabid fans only who believe Mayberry is real” crack - 
seriously dude…. That’s what our county needs - to believe in a simpler time if 
neighbor helping neighbor instead of looking at a 15 year old tweet and 
deciding you are or were something based on that and so now you have 
retributions to pay.  Mr. Koppel’s crack about “ afraid of letting the young 
boy watch TAGS 4 hours a day might turn his brain to mush “- sir, your brain is 
mush. I said it and I ain’t taking it back neither.  This was a hit piece. It 
was great up until the trolley scene. Even the African American family told him 
what a great place it was to live now. Of course he kept worrying about 40 
years ago..,  thank goodness for the trolley man. He nailed it. Like I said… 
swell party, but what a dumb trick

Ted Koppel Mt. Airy segment

I just watched the video about Mayberry and Mt. Airy and parts of it were
good. However for the most part it was way too political. Ted Koppel tried
to make this a hit piece on conservatives. That part was really disgusting.

I am glad the people on the trolley car stood up to him and let their
beliefs be made known. I always knew Koppel was far leftist so it did not
surprise at all with what he tried to do. He should have left politics out
of it. Mt. Airy is a great place and bravo to the people on the street car
who love Mayberry.

Sunday morning segment

It was a horrible segment on CBS on Mt Airy/Mayberry. Ted Kopple turned what I 
thought was going to be a fun interview on Mayberry/Mt. Airy and turned it into 
political views.

CBS Morning show segment

I agree with Rick from Virginia. What could have been a really nice report
on why TAGS has such enduring popularity was turned into something
political - for no good reason.

I was hoping CBS would go into some of the life lessons and stories about
the father-son relationship between Andy and Opie, and other themes of
TAGS, instead of introducing topics which have nothing to do with why TAGS
is such a great program. Very disappointing.

I agree. We should all give Ted Koppel the big freeze. He waited till he had a 
captive audience  (trolley riders) and then asked for hands to show Trump or 
Biden. Of course, it went downhill from there. Even after a rider stood up and 
reminded him that they were in Mt Airy for Mayberry, not a political poling 
jag. Sad that it had to take on that tone.  He didn’t speak to anyone from 
Surry Arts, or any of the tribute artists. It was all about his posturing and 
making out like he had his feet planted right on Main Street. Aunt Bee knows 
how to treat people like that. Let’s set up a thin rope across the street about 
so high… and when he comes riding thru town….PT.
