Watching MeTV last night, I was a little surprised to see Ken Lynch (Capt. Barker in "The Manhunt", FBI agent in "A Black Day for Mayberry") on "All In the Family" - not as a gruff detective or cop, but as a refrigerator repairman trying to fix the Bunker's fridge. Maybe Aunt Bee should have called him when Andy told her to "Call the man!" Then, on "Dick Van Dyke", there was Mr. Jackson, the pompous magazine editor from "Andy on Trial" (Roy Roberts) , as a pompous sponsor of the Allen Brady Show - married to none other than the snooty Mrs. Bixby (Isabel Randolph) of the Women's Historical Society in "A Plaque for Mayberry". Triple Alumni on "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."
Watched the episode "The Short Voyage Home" and saw 3 TAGS alumni in less than 5 minutes. The first 2 played the exact type of character they played on TAGS: Jay Novello, the crook in "Guest of Honor", and the crooked lawyer in "Otis Sues the County", played another smooth-talking swindler, trying to get ahold of Gomer's wad of cash. As soon as he left the scene, here comes "Hubcaps Lesh", also looking to relieve Gomer of his $1600. She was even dressed in the same outfit she wore as the crooked widow in "Barney's First Car". But the third alum played the exact opposite type of role he played in TAGS. Mild-mannered choirmaster John Masters was a wanted criminal in the episode - the police nabbed him on Gomer's bus and took him into custody. >bit parts were given to the same group of people. Agreed there were less actors available for bit parts half a century ago but remember each production house “owned” the actors that contracted with them. Warner Bros “owned” the westerns where many actors appear and reappear. But also – Production houses “loaned” actors out. It was a different world then and should never be compared to the Hooeywood we know today. While watching the old 50s and 60s tv shows quite a few actors showed up from one show to another. I put the bucket on my head and gave it a think. There were not as many people in the tv acting business back then and fewer agents so the bit parts were given to the same group of people. Good for them. Now there are so many channels and shows I don't know any of them. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
The Case of the Triple Alumni Sighting
Just happened to come across a Perry Mason episode this morning while changing channels ("The Case of the Hateful Hero") and in less than 10 minutes, I saw 3 TAGS alumni: Howard Sprague's mother as the CEO of a company; Agent Jenkins, the fake FBI agent in "Crime Free Mayberry", as a crooked company board member; and Mr. Allen, the phony film producer who came to Mayberry as part of the crew to supposedly make a movie about Sheriff Taylor in "TV or Not TV", as the police board chairman. Again, pretty amazing how many good character actors appeared in TAGS. JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Alumni Sighting - and two questions
Last night, I watched a very good episode of "The Twilight Zone" titled "BacK There", about a man who somehow goes back in time and tries to stop Lincoln's assassination. The Washington D.C. police desk sergeant, with huge mutton-shop sideburns, was none other than Paul Hartman a/k/a Emmett Clark. I've seen this episode before but never picked up on it. Now, a couple questions: first, just finished watching the "Gomer Pyle: USMC" episode "Gomer Goes Home". It dawned on me - at the end, as Gomer was leaving on the bus, he looks out the window and sees Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and Goober just returning from their camping trip. Why would they pull up to the Court House, where Andy climbed up on the station wagon and started unloading all their luggage and gear there, instead of just going back to their house? Makes no sense. Makes a better ending, I guess. My other question is this: I thought the only actors who were listed in the show credits at the end were people who had speaking parts in the episode - that's why we don't know who played Mr. Schwump, for example. Yet Clint Howard's name is in the credits in the episodes where little Leon makes an appearance, although he never says anything. I'm guessing it's because his big brother and father were on TAGS?? I forgot to post this last weekend. Ernest T. appeared on Love Boat as a washed-up comedian. He did a short stint onstage and was united with a show-biz dog that was heartwarming. A triple alumni sighting - and Merry Christmas
I recently watched an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and surprisingly, there were 3 TAGS alumni on it: first, of course, was Laura's friend and neighbor, Millie, who was Ella, the local newspaper reporter in Season 8's episode "Aunt Bee's Cousin"; then, there was Malcolm Merriweather, as the teacher of an adult education class who had romantic designs on Laura; and finally, there was Emma Watson/Brand as the oldest student in class, who had a very funny part. Merry Christmas to all. Thanks to everyone for the great posts and links and humorous comments the past year. Looking forward to a happy and healthy 2022, and another year of this TAGS Bulletin Board. (And thanks to Allan for keeping this going). Surprise alumni sighting
The other day on Turner Classic Movies they showed the Lucllle Ball / Henry Fonda film "Yours, Mine, and Ours". The girls were sitting around the dining room table in a scene and one of them looked really familiar, and I was sure I had seen her on TAGS. Turns out, it was Suzanne Cupito/Morgan Brittany, who played Mary Alice Carter in Season 8's "Opie's First Love". The movie and the episode were shot the same year, so I guess that's why she looked so familiar. JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Another surprising alumni sighting
I was watching a 1964 episode of "McHale's Navy" Saturday night, with the plot of having a Russian naval officer visiting the crew of PT-73 to learn about our tactics, etc. Turns out the officer was a woman, to everybody's surprise - and, to my surprise, she was none other than Sue Ane Langdon, a/k/a Nurse Mary, who went out on the nighttime picnic with Andy that Barney, of course, interrupted. Quite a difference between the two roles, especially when she went from a strict by-the-book officer to a vodka-drinking, sarong-wearing buddy of McHale's crew. Another versatile TAGS actress. Double-alumni sighting on M.A.S.H. - and another in a classic movie
Watching a Season 2 episode of M.A.S.H. ("The Trial of Henry Blake"), there was Clara Edwards, playing a nurse running a clinic in Korea. And the guy playing the general in charge of the court-martial looked familiar from TAGS too, so I looked him up: Robert Simon, who played Mr. Crawford, the drug store owner, in "Opie's Drugstore Job". A couple days earlier, I watched the 1956 movie "Patterns" on TCM, about the ruthless world of corporate board rooms. The nasty, mean villain of the movie was Everett Sloane, known to TAGS fans as mean old Jubal Foster in "The Keeper of the Flame". Alumni Sighting - and the price of lettuce.......
Watching "Dick Van Dyke" last night, the star of the episode was one of my favorite TAGS alumni - Denver Pyle. He played Rob Petrie's Uncle George and was great in a very funny role. The episode was filmed in 1963, the same year that Briscoe Darling made his first TAGS appearance. I thought it was interesting that "Uncle George" was supposed to be much older than the young-looking Rob, and he looked it - but in reality Denver Pyle was only 5 years older than Dick Van Dyke. Another interesting fact from that episode: the guy who played Sally's boyfriend, Herman, was Bill Idelson. If that name seems familiar, it's because he was also a writer who wrote about a dozen TAGS episodes (and the Uncle George episode he appeared in on "Dick Van Dyke"). JOE from G.I.
