Tilde escaping problem

2005-02-12 Thread Donny Viszneki
Using GNU Wget 1.9.1...
I read the source code used for escaping filenames before saving them
to the disk in url.c, and it doesn't seem that it will escape the tilde
ever. This however isn't the problem I'm experiencing. The problem is
that HTTP standards allow for a tilde in a URL, and wget escapes it
(resulting in %7E) before making the HTTP request.

Why is this such a problem? Well some webservers seem to hit you with a
302, replacing your %7E with a tilde. So, I see something like this
happening:

~/piano$ wget http://www.pitt.edu/~deben/freebies.html
--07:35:29-- http://www.pitt.edu/%7Edeben/freebies.html
   => `freebies.html'
Resolving www.pitt.edu... 136.142.42.14
Connecting to www.pitt.edu[136.142.42.14]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 302 Object Moved
Location: http://www.pitt.edu/~deben/freebies.html [following]
--07:35:29-- http://www.pitt.edu/%7Edeben/freebies.html
   => `freebies.html'
Connecting to www.pitt.edu[136.142.42.14]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 302 Object Moved
Location: http://www.pitt.edu/~deben/freebies.html [following]
--07:35:30-- http://www.pitt.edu/%7Edeben/freebies.html
   => `freebies.html'
Connecting to www.pitt.edu[136.142.42.14]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 302 Object Moved
Location: http://www.pitt.edu/~deben/freebies.html [following]
--07:35:30-- http://www.pitt.edu/%7Edeben/freebies.html
   => `freebies.html'
[i cut this part out because it was very long and redundant]
20 redirections exceeded.
~/piano$
So, you can see what the problem is! I'd have written a patch if I had
found the code responsible for escaping URLs, but I didn't have a lot
of time to look at it. Thanks for your help! I hope you can fix this
problem easily enough!

Well, there now should be a file called index.html in your wget directory!
Now replace the text in your wget.bat with
wget -x http://xoomer.virgilio.it/hherold/index.html
and watch as wget will create matching directories.

Uhm, cd is the windows command to "change directory".

use
wget -m -k www.helpusall.com
it should be all you'll need from what I have seen.

Hello Jens :)
Thank you :)
I have to admit at the start that I understand very little of this *as
of now*, but that will change with time and effort.

What I tried so far is, I downloaded wget from the link you shared, then..
I created a text file, and renamed it "wget.bat"
and added the text "wget http://xoomer.virgilio.it/hherold/index.html";
in the file and saved it.I then double-clicked on it and nothing
happened that I could see.

"Did you cd to the directory wget was unpacked to?"
I'm sorry, what does "cd" mean?
I looked at your site, and it sure looks more inviting :b, i'm more familiar
with windows environments.
I have a site www.helpusall.com and all I want to do is backup all the html
and pictures on the entire site.

Hi Jon!
Yes, I tried using the 'command prompt' (thru XP) and it replied:
"
'wget' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operatable
program or batch file
"
Did you cd to the directory wget was unpacked to?
If not, you either need to or add the wget directory to your "path"
environment. I always have used wget with a .bat file I'd edit and start
from the Windows Explorer. But you might prefer the pure command-line
approach :)
aside from leaving out a comma after "program",
Well, if my memory of german grammar lessons from 15 years ago are valid
for english in 2005, the "or" replaces the "," in this enumeration =)

solution, or even better, could you suggest a url that I could learn from?

To "learninglovinghelping" (or are you "LearningGrowingSharing"?):
wget is a command line tool and as such, needs some command line options
to work. If you simply click on it, it complains about a lack thereof and
exits. Try using it from a command prompt. Welcome to the exciting and
wonderful world of command line tools!

I'm affraid, you misuse wget. The main beauty of wget that it restarts
autmoatically when ftp connection is dropped.
> i use perl to manage the progress of wget
You do not need to do it. The only thing you should do is to check
completion code. You cannot help to wget, but you can hinder it.

When you restart wget, it checks whether the file on your local
machine exists and gets the file size. Then it sends "RESTART" ftp
command and appends the retrieved portion to the local file. If you
think that the donwloaded file is not identical to the file on a remote
server you should be more specific: is the length the same? what did you
mean by "garbage" section? is that section has anything common with the
file on the server, etc.

wget support for large files

2005-02-12 Thread Chris Ross
The wget web page at www.gnu.org has a link for the mailing list that
doesn't
work. So I'm emailing here.

I'd like support for 64-bit file sizes in wget. wget 1.9.1 appears
not to have
this.

Leonid Petrov appears to have added this support recently. Could his
work
be incorporated? Is it already present in the HEAD? When is the 2.0
(or
1.10) release scheduled?

  Thank you.

Of course! Don't let someone fool you!
I've been using wget with excellent result on
Windows 95, ME, 2000 and now XP home. You should not need Windows's "safe
mode" in any case, BTW.

However, wget was designed for a command-line oriented approach that might
seem hard to understand to some Windows users at first.

First, make sure you download the right version - I suggest:
ftp://ftp.sunsite.dk/projects/wget/windows/wget-1.9.1b-complete.zip
( from Heiko's excellent site
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/hherold/ )
Unpack the archive to a folder you'd like.
Now, you need to write your own command-line for wget.
create a new txt file, change its name to wget.bat and add the line
wget http://xoomer.virgilio.it/hherold/index.html
save the file and start it via double-click.
wget now should download the index.html page of Heiko.
If you want to write more complex wget command-lines, have a look at the
included help file(s) of wget.

If you like a graphical user interface, may I suggest that you have a look
at my own GUI frontend to wget:
http://www.jensroesner.de/wgetgui/
It gives you access to the most frequently used wget options.

I really hope you will like wget!
Jens

wget isnt designed for Window$ and will never run properly on this system.
