However, the text of it (page, article, project page) is not really correct and should IMO always be replaced with a localization of Main page. Quite many wikis have already done this, but often in bad ways, for example via JavaScript, which is bad for accessibility and performance or via parser functions in the MediaWiki message, which is bad for caching. Because SQlite does not use DB prefixes, it cannot determine which tables to copy and which ones to drop. As a result, it tries to drop all the tables (not a good thing). A weblink is ending after the first space. The space is inside the
{{#special:MergeAccount}} because that parser function is replaced with
Specjalna:Łączenie kont and that contains the space.
The message need a urlencode around the #special or we need a #speciale
function (bug 23006).
A bad way is to use underscores instead of spaces in special pagename (already
done in trunk), but than other letters make problem in some browsers, because
there are not url encode.

That being said, I'd imagine that, at the least, functions for determining a string's length and finding the position of, replacing, or returning a substring (or splitting a string into substrings) would be needed. Depending on the implementation, a replacement for pad[left] and padright may also be a good idea. As enwiki has demonstrated admirably with [[Category:String manipulation
templates]], the only fundamental requirement is a truncate function: one that
returns the first n characters of a string. This is [[Template:Str left]], and
the part of the hierarchy which uses the {{padleft:}} hack. From that enwiki
has built {{str index}} to return the n'th character of a string, by iterating
through a (limited) character set and checking whether
{{str left|string|n-1}} . X == {{str left|string|n}}
From that enwiki has built {{str sub}}, exactly analogous to PHP's substr(), by
selecting the individual characters with {{str index}} and concatenating them
together at the end; and {{str len}} to get the length of a string by checking
for
{{str left|string|n}} == {{str left|string|n+1}}
From there, {{str right}}, analogous to substr(string|n). From there,
{{str find}}, a crude pattern match, and from there {{str sub}}, an even cruder
replace-in-string function.
All of these higher functions are built on enormous pyramids of lower functions
and come at substantial performance penalties. But there is very clearly a use
for them, and their utilisation is only currently constrained by that poor
performance, and specifically that people are afraid of incurring the
sysadmins' wrath by overusing them. People know that it is literally a
one-line code change (r46628) to bring the whole house of cards tumbling down.
But fighting against that is very clearly a demand to use these features.
So the order of precedence is as follows:
1) an implementation of PHP's substr(string|0|n) is what is currently
provided by the {{padleft:|n|string}} hack.
2) a full implementation of string slicing is the next level which avoids an
obvious wikitext hack; in PHP this would be the full
substr(string|start|length); IIRC in python it would be
string[start:length].
3) an implementation of PHP's strpos().
4) an implementation of PHP's str_replace().

The real question is, given str_replace() as a baseline rather than {{str

Bear with me: (I was going to title this Move the words powered by into the HTML, thus allowing the icon to respect the current language until I saw how good the text versions look.) Though one could workaround the problem via $wgFooterIcons, it still doesn't make sense that li id=footer-poweredbyico a href=http://www.mediawiki.org/;img src=/skins/common/images/poweredby_mediawiki_88x31.png alt=Powered by MediaWiki width=88 height=31 //a isn't translated -- just as one wouldn't want MediaWiki always displaying some Hindi/Arabic/Korean... thing that nobody can read there at the bottom, whist the rest of the page in in English. If the icon must be always in English for some international legal reason, then at least have an additional tooltip in the current language saying what the icon is all about. Another idea might be removing the words powered by from the icon, but leaving them (translated) in the ALT/tooltip. Ah ha®, put the Powered by (translated according to the current language, of course) into the Rendered HTML (leaving the word Mediawiki in the icon), thus removing the need for hundreds of different icons. I am so smart! Make it even more ugly like: [Powered by ICON]. Note the stylish [ and ] so the user's eye is sure to know what we are talking about. Not my fault that the icon stays the same size while the text size around it might change. Ah ha™ #2: Or reduce your carbon footprint by chucking the icon (so 1990s) all together, and just using some bold font at bottom. I see perfectly good text Powered bys on the bottom of http://ragii.com/ and http://smcj.net/ -- ADMIT IT. No need for that OldsMobile of a goofy icon. Well then turn it off on you own wiki.
