Ideally, we should have the ability to vary the font used in the textarea
depending on whether the text being edited is preformatted or not. Absent such
fancy tricks, though, monospaced is the safe default, even if it may not look
as nice. It would be a good idea to offer a gadget to make the font
proportional again, though. (This is trivial to do, just override the style
with a more specific CSS rule.)

Created an attachment (id=5577)
-- (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5577)
patch against r44396

Thanks for the useful feedback. It seems I was indeed working from a version of
cite quite a bit older than my svn MW. I have manually merged the recent
improvements into my code. In particular, great minds must think alike, as I
was surprised to find that after switching to Sanitizer::escapeId from my
validateName, I still passed the parser tests, because my carefully chose
regexps were identical to the ones in the Sanitizer class! (Also, I had removed
$wgAllowCiteGroups per the comment to 'remove when groups are fully tested',
and given that they are now on by default and used on the main WP.)

The way the new tags are written however makes it a little problematic to just
turn off merging. If a $wgMergeCitations feature is wanted, then it can be done
easily, but it would be only for aesthetic reasons, not reliability, as nearly
the same amount of new code would still be run in each case.

I have cunningly fixed the problem of entering identifiers which can occur in
wikitext by re-using the ref tag itself, which is neat, because it is the
only one we can count on being parsed the way the want. It also happens to work
well with the 'unclosed ref' code to make sure that any dangerous ref or
/ref still in the wikitext is not a full tag which would mess things up. It
looks a spot fragile, but theoretically should work, and I have tested both the
cases of too many refs and too many /refs, neither of which cause problems.

Thanks for the reminder to update all the documentation, which I can definitely
remember to do if/when this goes through.

I have shortened and improved the dashing function now, and it adds footnotes
as a special case. Thanks for pointing this out.

[Bug 16626] New: Delete API request does not handle correctly empty reason param.

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16626

 Summary: Delete API request does not handle correctly empty
reason param.
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.14-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All

 Severity: enhancement

The API delete feature does not work like awaited with an empty reason
parameter.
The bug is reproducible with the SVN r44509.

What I do:
* Call the delete API function with following parameters:
'action' = 'delete',
'title' = $my_image.ext,
'token' = $my_valid_edit_token,
'format' = 'xml'

What I get:
* the HTTP response looks like following:
?xml version=1.0?apierror
code=internal_api_error_DBQueryError info=Database query error

#0 /var/www/mirror/fr/includes/db/Database.php(591):

#11 /var/www/mirror/fr/api.php(77): ApiMain-gt;execute()
#12 {main}

/error/api
* The image is deleted but it is impossible to restore it.

What I want:
* No API error
* A restorable image

Remarks:
* If I give a non-empty string reason, it works like I want.
* I suppose the code does not work correctly with an non-empty string reason
and is not able to insert a log entry in the old images table or something like
that, and for this reason the image is forever lost (in the DB).

I think it would be nice to have in the parser as well. How about the error
The checksum of this ISBN number is invalid. Seems clear enough, and should
not make people think their syntax is wrong. I don't think it's ideal for the
parser to link broken numbers (and of course, tests should be fixed).

If you search for sarkozy, you get the desired result but if you just search
for merkel, you don't get her page, you have to enter the full name instead.
Either this is just an anomaly or there is a more general situtation with
standardisation of searching.

Sarkozy is a redirect to Nicolas Sarkozy. Merkel is a
disambiguation page, because multiple people with the surname have articles.
The search function cannot take you to the page you want without entering the
full name because it has no way of knowing which Merkel it is you want.

If files can be deleted without leaving a log entry, then this is a serious
problem. An administrator with bad intentions could delete a large number of
files without anyone knowing it was them.

[Bug 16632] New: updateArticleCount.inc. php can be made significantly more efficient

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16632

 Summary: updateArticleCount.inc.php can be made significantly
more efficient
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Maintenance scripts
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: s...@lyricwiki.org

The query in updateArticleCount.inc.php's makeSql() function can be made faster
an less RAM-intensive. It currently queries for a ton of rows, then counts the
number of rows in the result.

The current query is:
return SELECT DISTINCT page_namespace,page_title FROM $page,$pagelinks .
WHERE pl_from=page_id and page_namespace IN ( $nsset )
.
AND page_is_redirect = 0 AND page_len 0;
but could be changed to:
return SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT page_namespace,page_title) FROM $page,$pagelinks
.
WHERE pl_from=page_id and page_namespace IN ( $nsset )
.
AND page_is_redirect = 0 AND page_len 0;

The code in the count() function would have to be updated also. Instead of
$count = $this-dbr-numRows( $res );
$this-dbr-freeResult( $res );
return $count;
it could be changed to:
$row = $this-dbr-fetchObject( $res );
$this-dbr-freeResult( $res );
return (int)$row-count;

Also I posted another bug at the same time (a search problem) and it was
removed when it shouldn't have been. It is still a problem. I think the two
are related, obviously.

It wasn't removed, it was resolved as invalid. I explained why it happens
there: if you use Go with a search phrase that matches an existing page
title, you will be taken to that title; in your case, one of the pages was a
redirect to another page, the other one was a disambiguation page.

Bugzilla is for problems with the MediaWiki software, not problems with the
content of a Wikimedia project. The issue you described is not a MediaWiki
issue -- if it is an issue at all, it is one with the English Wikipedia's
content, and if you think that either of the pages Sarkozy or Merkel
should display something else, you are welcome to edit them accordingly.

Regarding the issue described in this bug, I can't tell for sure since I can't
find the page, but my guess is that the page contains the same content in many
different languages and JavaScript is used to display only one language at a
time to the user; while the page is loading and the script has not yet run, all
the languages will be viewable. It's not ideal but I know it's used in places
on multilingual projects like Commons.

[Bug 16294] Update to cite.php refs: ids fixed, footnotes, globbed links

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16294

--- Comment #8 from Brad Jorsch b-jor...@northwestern.edu 2008-12-13
20:36:40 UTC ---
(Line numbers are after applying the patch)

I see you added a 'cite_error_references_nested' error! Shouldn't the ref was
part be localizable, though? Also, can the old check (lines 158-161) be
removed, or is it still useful?

fails. At line 143, it should be is_null($key) instead of
$key==false.

When the ref tag has unknown parameters (e.g. ref name=foo value=bar),
false is returned from refArg into $key. Instead of generating an error, these
are now all being treated as ref name= group=0 would be were name=
allowed. Either restore the check for $key===false in guardedRef, or change
refArg to silently ignore unknown parameters.

You're not escaping the group when outputting the inline ref tags: try ref
group=lt;scriptgt;alert('Pwned!')lt;/scriptgt;Uh-oh/ref. Passing $text
through htmlspecialchars in referencePlaceText seems to take care of it.

For the 'cite_error_references_no_text' error, you are not properly escaping
the key. But here it seems you can only inject wikitext, so it's just aesthetic
rather than a security hole.

I see, that all mentioned hooks were removed at all. Any idea, how extensions
should modify special page output? Maybe some other hooks added? If you plan to
remove hooks this way, then without proper core class extension feature many of
extensions will be dead. I'm really missing ability to replace any core class
with my own, that extends original one.

I didn't find a vote
feature, as the Mozilla db has.

Bottom right, Vote for this bug (Ctrl-F for vote would have found it).

I don't understand the difference
to bug 710, which is supposedly fixed.

Bug 710 is about redirects to a category working when you navigate directly to
the page, the same way they work for other pages. Prior to that bug's
resolution, I guess #REDIRECT :Category:XYZ would do nothing, or be buggy
or something (it was before my time). This is about redirects actually
including one category's contents in another.

It is useful if someone wants to re-rate a revision by changing a tag value

Now the red exclamation marks do appear again for non-content namespaces :-)
But patrolling doesn't work properly!

But:
The patrol link is different from the former one. Now it is over all other
comparison stuff (in the middle). Before FlaggedRevs it had been in the right
column (near undo/rollback). Is this part of FlaggedRevs? Probably yes, as
*all* sighters now have this link, not just sysops like before. OK, that is not
the actual problem ;-) The actual problem is that the link does not have any
effect for me (sighter+sysop)!

See
http://de.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Wiktionary:Teestubecurid=67156diff=898366oldid=898298rcid=915951

When clicking on the link it will take me to the successfully patrolled page,
but the red exclamation mark just doesn't disappear from RecentChanges!
Furthermore, wikt:de:Special:Log/patrol doesn't show any patrolling of
that. I still believe that comment #4 is important!

[Bug 16375] FlaggedRevs blocks/disables Patroller Extension

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16375

--- Comment #9 from Melancholie wiki.melancho...@web.de 2008-12-14 00:04:40
UTC ---
Fast ;-)
Thanks a lot :-)

Just to give you some more information, as I am wondering why also this bug was
different for each user:

Further note that a user (just being sighter) mentioned that he saw red
exclamation marks before the Wiktionary:Teestube at 22:18 (13th), but I
didn't see those at that time, only one of an IP edit that was done at 00:30
(14th Dec.) [note that the other user now also just sees the red mark only for
the latest change]. But the older changes actually weren't patrolled (seems
to), see wikt:de:Special:Log/patrol. Related to comment #4? For some
users it seemed to work a little bit better, sometimes.(this is what I am still
wondering about)

Might be so, but I the red exclamation mark also disappeared for the (latest)
IP edit(s) when a sighter edited the page afterwards (did test this)!

Wrong behaviour of auto-patrolling?

[Bug 16639] New: Code Review buttons can be considered confusing

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16639

 Summary: Code Review buttons can be considered confusing
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
 URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/445
09
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: trivial
 Priority: Normal
Component: CodeReview
AssignedTo: jschulz_4...@msn.com
ReportedBy: p858sn...@yahoo.com.au

When going to post a comment in a code review page the buttons (Commit Changes,
Commit Next unresolved, Preview) maybe confusing to the end user and have
them thinking they are doing something to the code compared to just posting a
comment about it.

[Bug 14321] Allow anon users to define which version should be displayed by default

2008-12-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14321

--- Comment #4 from Korg dotk...@gmail.com 2008-12-14 02:07:28 UTC ---
Perhaps a simple button would be better than a preferences page.

Another suggestion that has been brought up would be to give a cookie to
anonymous contributors when they first edit a page, so they could see the most
recent version by default. This is a separate issue, although if ever it is
implemented they should be able to change the default view.

Unless there are objections, I'll reopen this feature request.

become more creative, as shown at the report in the URL field.

Any button would either be obtrusive or unlikely to be noticed.

I'm not sure we should be slapping this kind of options on readers. It should
just work and show them the best content.

Also, though less important, this could be somewhat annoying in public places
(schools/libraries).

I tried searching in several places and was unable to confirm this has been

feature so I can evaluate the claim that it has been satisfactorily fixed, as
the originator I am forced to reopen it as not fixed.
