[Bug 18793] Free up Project as a namespace (for Wikipedia:Projects) by using an alternate token
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18793 --- Comment #9 from stevertigo stv...@gmail.com 2009-05-15 08:36:10 UTC --- I appreciate the responses. But just as a hypothetical, it would be great if one of you could list the general fixes that would have to be done in order for it to work. Suppose for a moment someone like myself wants to use that namespace in their own install, and wants to script the process so they don't have to repeat their work when they upgrade to MediaWiki_x. Suspend for a moment those objections which assume infeasibility, too much work, or canonical usage. What are the steps? How much work in man-hours would that be? -SV -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 18675] Create game namespace on Hebrew Wikisource
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18675 --- Comment #5 from Dovi Jacobs dovijac...@yahoo.com 2009-05-15 09:29:13 UTC --- Patience please, we all know that in the world of Bugzilla ten days is no time at all... :-) Regarding project scope, Wikisource is for source texts and for functions that add value to source texts (educational annotations, commentaries, translations, illustrations, etc). You can look at English Wikisource policy on this, though unfortunately you can't read ours in Hebrew. In any case, we have decided to include within the scope of the wiki educational games on texts (mostly revolving around text-based questions and quizzes), but in a separate namespace to differentiate it from the actual texts themselves. This is a community decision that not a single person has questioned, and has produced quality educational material. The only question is the technical one of a namespace. That is still being discussed, and even though there is support for it in the meantime (see http://he.wikisource.org/wiki/%D7%95%D7%99%D7%A7%D7%99%D7%98%D7%A7%D7%A1%D7%98:%D7%9E%D7%96%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%9F#.D7.9E.D7.A8.D7.97.D7.91-.D7.A9.D7.9D_.D7.9C.D7.9E.D7.A9.D7.97.D7.A7.D7.99.D7.9D), nevertheless we ask you not to implement it yet because discussion is still continuing both on namespace and on related issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. Yuck. Why? We've already got a perfectly good way to register actions. Yes, but the handlers for these actions are often in the 'wrong' classes (mostly Article), resulting in poor DB/UI separation. Of course putting the UI for an action in its own class is no guarantee for proper separation, as evidenced by the way subpage moving was implemented. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 6455] Install the StringFunctions extension
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6455 Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@gmail.com changed: What|Removed |Added CC||roan.katt...@gmail.com --- Comment #75 from Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@gmail.com 2009-05-15 10:59:44 UTC --- (In reply to comment #73) I think you missed my point - I don't mean MW has to have something because programming languages have it, I mean if programming languages have it as standard, AND we want to have it (as we clearly do in this case), then it surely must be a pretty trivial matter to code. Surely there are standard php libraries which have all these functions? If you read the comments (granted, 74 is a lot), you'll see that there were issues with previous implementations, such as the need to use Unicode-aware string functions, the need to fall back to alternative implementations if those functions aren't available (they're a PHP extension) and the need to do all this efficiently. Robert has attached a patch, which he could (and probably should, or maybe already has?) committed to StringFunctions in SVN; Tim or Brion can then review that and, if it passes, enable it on Wikipedia. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. I think this is because there is no mime type entry for jpeg2000 format in mime.types file. I made a patch anyway. (In reply to comment #1) Probably a more general bug, for example hu:File:China.ogg is an mp3 file with .ogg extension. IMHO, this is because 'audio/mp3' is the main mime type in mime.info and we use 'audio/mpeg' in mime.types instead of it, so MimeMagic::isMatchingExtension() returns NULL (which means continue) instead of false. [Bug 18810] New: Color-history view mode - colorized article text to show editor attribution history
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18810 Summary: Color-history view mode - colorized article text to show editor attribution history Product: Wikimedia Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: General/Unknown AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: stv...@gmail.com I'm sure this has been thought of if not suggested before, but ifnot I'm suggesting it now. This idea is in the context of providing extra modes for viewing articles in addition to the view, edit, and print modes, etc. (sidenote: Print mode could be usable as an alternate viewing mode if only it used some padding around the sides. Will file new bug). Among these possible modes is a color-history mode, which (after some magic) displays the article text in view mode using a color scheme, each of which is associated with an Username or IP, or else with particular edit diffs. A sidebar key will show the Usernames in order of the article's current text, and the colors are less important as is the ability to read the text and distinguish one block of edits for another. Of course, links to particular diffs would also be nice, though this might be complicated in modes which color code by editor and not by diff. Sounds a lot easier than it looks of course. I understand it only insofar as it involves scanning the article's history diffs for changes, associating in some way those changes with their editors, and resolving any merging, conflicts, overlap, and minor edit bias. The app must compile a separate picture of the above, and translating sometimes complicated diff data into some kind of visible code that must be reasonably faithful and not oversimplifying. History depth is also an issue, and to some degree there can be options with regard to what chosen depth, method of sorting, or mode of display are used. Reference tags could also conceivably be attributed to the person who added them, but these are less easy, and might ignore subsequent edits within the tag. There are probably philosophical aspects involved, but the idea of making it easier to tell who does what seems to be an elementary one. -SV -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18811 Summary: Print mode needs padding around the sides, and maybe print-mode links. Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: User interface AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: stv...@gmail.com A little padding on the sides would help readability, and should be easy enough to deal with without interfering substantially with printing. But this raises the issue that print mode might also be an alternate view mode. For some reason print mode preserves links to other articles, which suggests its usage as a view mode is not far-fetched, even if its for some reason not desirable. A couple of minor improvements/ideas in that direction: * Print mode links: Links in print mode could also be print-moded, allowing one-click browsing instead of having to select print mode from each next article: foo would link to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fooprintable=yes instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo. * Maybe a Special:Print:Foo interface would help inasfar as coding print-links go. * Keyboard shortcut integration: shorcuts like alt+shift+e and alt+shift+d would open up edit mode or the talk page, respectively. * Branding: Ostensibly an alternate mode of viewing would require us to put a smallish WP/WM logo on it. -Steven -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 18791] CGI:IRC web interface for Freenode's Wikimedia chat rooms
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18791 --- Comment #6 from stevertigo stv...@gmail.com 2009-05-15 22:37:58 UTC --- #! OT, maybe This may be a little bit tangential, but the general issue here has to do largely with the integration of IRC and Wikipedia: The purpose of all talk on Wikipedia is encyclopedia related, and IRC should not too different. Following from this is the idea that certain aspects of editing on Wikipedia should be augmented by IRC through ways beyond the current detached omniscient usage. The reasons for this are that while Wiki talk pages are great for adding to or manipulating document-like discussions, IRC is much more fluid. Using certain protocols we could reap the benefits of using both fluid discussion and permanent text logging integrated with Wiki discussions. One != other, but its important nevertheless to note what each has that the other lacks, and try to find some middle ground, either by: * Coding that integrates the two concepts, or * Protocols that facilitate or emulate such integration IRC-Wiki coordination has been going on for a while now, albeit a bit tangentially. But using IRC in the spirit of fairness to non-IRC users means also logging discussions that deal with specific article changes to specific article talk pages. Where all of this is going is the eventual ability to deal with article discussions and changes directly in IRC and have these be logged in Wiki article talk logs. Topic-specific chatrooms are quite feasible, if not altogether likely. One of the aspects of this is the problem that content created on IRC be copyable to Wikipedia. The default policy is that such is generally forbidden, though specific permission appears to provide a certain compromise. Specific permission could be generalized, and simple convention such as adding a tag at the end of IRC comments would help indicate that a person permits the usage of their comments on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, etc. Something as simple as.. ] User: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet akum. Q ..would indicate that their comment could be used with attribution on WP. Or a Q mode such as Username_Q could be used to indicate that anything they say on IRC under that mode is quotable with attribution. Entering into such a specific article discussion might be indicated on IRC via another simple permission convention: ] User 1: article name. AQ ] User 2.. n] article name. AQ After which any comment followed by an AQ would then be quoted by someone to the indicated article talk page: ] User: lorem ipsum sit. AQ To indicate that a comment *should or *must be quoted there, people could use something like a simple exclamation mark (!) indicating emphasis: ] User: lorem ipsum sit. AQ! Naturally, these are not automatic processes and should not be assumed to supercede article discussions. Automation of such a system would require certain integration between WP and Freenode login APIs, and the addition of various parsing commands to Freenode - probably not going to happen, but it helps to get these ideas out anyway. -Steve -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18812 --- Comment #4 from mw...@wikipedia.be 2009-05-16 00:02:59 UTC --- (In reply to comment #3) I dispute the fact that sysops don't have all abusefilter rights. This wasn't clear from the vote we took at http://nl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Stemlokaal/AbuseFilter2 Please put this bug on hold until the nlwp community is clear about this. I’m terribly sorry if this was unclear to Maarten at any point, but this was part of the Voting Proposal. Non-Dutch speakers may use Google translate to come to the same conclusion as I did. On the voting-page (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Stemlokaal/AbuseFilter2), there’s a special heading “Stem voorstel” (=Voting proposal). The third bullet point on the voting-page clearly states that only bureaucrats can add/remove users to the group “abusefilter-modify”. This controversial decision was challenged during the TWO WEEKS(!) of discussion before the actual vote. One could check this for themselves at: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overleg_Wikipedia:Stemlokaal/AbuseFilter2 (Heading: “En nu tijd voor constructief overleg!”). I resent Maarten’s comment and am under the strong impression that he did not read the proposal anytime during the 5 weeks the proposal took to prepare, vote and to check/confirm. I am confident that the vote met all voting-guidelines, was clear to the community and that its outcome represents the opinion of the Dutch community. I do not want to fight this one-man crusade here – or anywhere else – as there are always people unhappy with any outcome, whatever it might be. Unfortunately it has been brought here. I do hope that this will in no way interfere in a quick enabling of the Abuse Filter, as we’ve been discussing it for over five weeks with – at last – a satisfying outcome. With any questions concerning this matter, I can be reached via the obvious channels, IRC: [MarkW], e-mail or talk pages. To inquire the opinion of other Dutch users, one might want to visit #wikipedia-nl. (But the comment above of LolSimon also illustrates that others were aware of this “dispute”) Best regards, Mark W / Mwpnl -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 18814] New: Preserve or generate a hyphenated ISBN at Book sources
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18814 Summary: Preserve or generate a hyphenated ISBN at Book sources Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: Special pages AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: ferde...@gmail.com Is there a chance to modify Wikimedia so that it generates the hyphenated ISBN parameter under a special name such as HYPHENATED_ISBN? Some online bookstores require hyphens in the ISBN search clause. I'd like to be able to write ISBN 5-7380-0015-3 (or at least 5-7380-0015-3), select Ozon.ru and arrive at http://www.ozon.ru/?context=searchtext=5-7380-0015-3 I'd like to be able to use a hyphenated ISBN parameter for this purpose, such as http://www.ozon.ru/?context=searchtext=HYPHENATED_ISBN Also, I am not sure why Mediawiki's parsing of the regular article text ISBN ... throws hyphens away on converting the text to Special:Book sources/PARSEDNUMBER. This seems to be redundant because further substitution of MAGICNUMBER on the Book sources page throws hyphens away regardless of the format of the parameter to that page. Finally, it would be nice if Mediawiki could automatically hyphenate non-hyphenated ISBN numbers provided in the regular article text, ISBN ... when generating its HYPHENATED_ISBN substitution in the Book sources page. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
