[Bug 32258] Release rights and describe in one step

2011-11-08 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32258

--- Comment #1 from Neil Kandalgaonkar ne...@wikimedia.org 2011-11-08
08:08:48 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #0)
Currently if you upload many files you can only choose rights for all files.
This is fine, but I think it would be more convenient to have it on one page
 with (optional) choose-for-all option.

Preferable at the top one should be able to choose common title (or more
 likely
common prefix), common categories and such. Or maybe simply choose copy
 below
for the first files (and maybe next files - copy from 2nd to 3rd, 4th...).

All this is partially related to Bug 32247 (not able to go back), but 32247 is
more about not being able to improve/fix one actions rather then ease of use.

If I could do this all over again I would definitely make it friendlier to
batching, along the lines you suggest. MediaWiki is very batch-hostile so even
this was an achievement, but we could have done a bit better.

We might yet make a feature to copy description from the previous one as a
kind of stopgap.

Hm... Yes, so if the thumbnail thing is not intentional then this is probably
related to Bug 26072. I would still expect a different behavior when clicking
on a name or at least you could a a tooltip (title) to explain what happens
when you click on a name.

If I understand correctly, PHP settings contains those + or - differences. So
it should take UTC and then add or subtract the specified difference.

So, in theory, it should be possibly to manually change those parameters.

I have enabled it, but it doesn't seem to be showing up..

I thought it was enough to set the NS, but it seems it might want a category.
 Arrgh...
Yes, it needs either a category, or a combination of namespace and 'odds' (i.e.
percentage of pages on which it'll show up).

eswiki people, could you clarify how you want this extension to be set up?
Should AFT only be enabled for pages in a certain category (or categories), or
only for a specific percentage (may be 100%) of pages in a certain namespace
(or namespaces) that aren't in a certain blacklist category (or categories)?

Interlanguage links in the sidebar are just that -- interLANGUAGE links. The
way MediaWiki decides whether a link is an interlanguage link is literally by
checking if the prefix is listed in languages/Names.php , which contains a map
of all language codes and their names.

'oldwikisource' is not a language code, and it doesn't represent a language.
Putting an entry saying 'old wikisource' in the Languages header would make
no sense. I'm assuming the real problem you're trying to solve is not
oldwikisource should appear in the languages list, but something else like
language XYZ doesn't have its own wikisource, so those pages live on
oldwikisource where we can't create interlanguage links to it?

Roan, can you take a peek at this patch and confirm it would not cause
 compatibility problems?
Compat problems are entirely on the client side, per comment #6, and it's far
from crazy to suspect people wrote code that relies on this specific output
format. For that reason, this would probably have to be announced as a breaking
change, and I'm very wary of making breaking changes (or changes that could be
breaking) for aesthetic reasons.

(In reply to comment #11)

Exactly, Roan. Thanks for your explanation. That's the problem we're trying to
solve. But also, note that not necessarily all pages on oldwikisource
correspond to a language code. We could have pages in ancient languages that do
not even have a language code, or contructed languages, or written in a mix of
two or more languages. (Wikisource is different from Wikipedia, that does not
accept content that hasn't got a language code. In Wikisource you can put every
published text in public domain, no matter in which language.)

In short words, all that doesn't clearly belong to a Wikisource existing
language code, goes to Old Wikisource, which is (in my opinion) a poorly chosen
name for what should actually be called Multilingual Wikisource.

What we would need is some fake language code to group everything that hasn't
got (yet) a language code. If 'oldwikisource' cannot be used as language code,
can we use something like 'mul'? On http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/scope.asp#S
they say: ISO 639-2 defines three code elements for other special situations.
The identifier [mul] (multiple languages) should be applied when many languages
are used and it is not practical to specify all the appropriate language
codes.

I fixed this by hacking a special case for sourceswiki into dumpInterwiki.php
in r102388 and rebuilding the interwiki map.

This is fixed now, as you can see by previewing something like [[:de:Foo]] on
sourceswiki. You may still see links with the old behavior because of the
parser cache; purging or null-editing the page will fix that.

This an artefact of the weird way in which cmnamespace works. When using
cmnamespace, you may get responses with fewer results than you were expecting,
or even zero results. Following the continue value will eventually get you to
the results you were looking for. This is weird, but it has to be this way for
performance reasons.

Instead of cmnamespace=14, you should use the newer cmtype=subcat, which
doesn't have this problem. Similarly, cmtype=file replaces cmnamespace=6.

Not all scripts are gadgets. Also note that some scripts have extensions which
is the case. Not all users of scripts use all extensions. It's not possible to
create gadgets with all possible combinations.
Ideally, extensions are separate modules.

Also, ideally, it should be possible to make modules out of user scripts
without having them be gadgets. That's probably something we should be working
on next. CC Krinkle for thoughts.

This patch no longer applies cleanly to trunk. SharkD, could you revise so it
applies to current trunk? You may also want to grab MediaWiki 1.18 beta 1 (
 http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-announce/2011-November/thread.html
) to see whether current behavior obviates the need for a fix.

 Thanks for contributing to MediaWiki.
Note that the sortable table code has been completely rewritten, it's now in
resources/jquery/jquery.tablesorter.js . I'm not sure whether the new table
sorter has this feature, but if it does, the patch would probably have to be
rewritten completely as well because the code it's patching doesn't exist any
more.

[Bug 9977] Refactor namespace rights checks out of Title.php, into Namespace.php

Roan, I shall be clearer in the future. I figure it's fine to suggest that
people install the latest release or beta just to see whether the bug they are
fixing is reproducible. Of course, once someone wants to write a patch, they
have to base it on trunk, and I'll be extra-clear about that. Is that
reasonable?

Yes, that's entirely reasonable. The wording in comment #3 was unclear and

David, thank you for the patch. I am asking developers to review it. Chad
Horohoe said that he hasn't had time to write up a reply to you, but that we
can't take your patch as it is right now, since doing it the way the patch
proposes would undo another bugfix. I'm going to get someone to give you an

What we would need is some fake language code to group everything that
 hasn't
got (yet) a language code. If 'oldwikisource' cannot be used as language code,
can we use something like 'mul'? On http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/scope.asp#S
they say: ISO 639-2 defines three code elements for other special situations.
The identifier [mul] (multiple languages) should be applied when many
 languages
are used and it is not practical to specify all the appropriate language
 codes.
I'm not very well-versed in the details of language code policy, so I'll leave
the decision of what's The Right Thing To Do to Siebrand (CC).

[Bug 31901] missing query-element when no titles specified

(In reply to comment #7)
I'm very wary of making breaking changes (or changes that could be
 breaking) for aesthetic reasons.

I can understand that, but I think it's not only for aesthetic reasons. The
convention to provide no pages element when there are none might be OK, but
the missing query element only leads to workarounds - and so should be
implemented cleaner.
When you query more than only properties (eg. prop and meta and list) there
also always will be the query element, but maybe no pages element. So every
implementation would have to check for !query || !pages, and I think it
wouldn't cause any problems at least to provide the query element every time.
What about that?

The code looks very good, except for minor detail of using 'or' instead of
'||'.

The user interface could perhaps be better, but that can be improved later if
necessary.

In testing I see:
Warning: implode(): Invalid arguments passed in
/www/sandwiki/includes/specials/SpecialRecentchanges.php on line 611

My wiki doesn't have any defined tags. It is probably also the reason why I
don't see any filtering interface in the first place.

Anyway, looks like changing return '' to return array() in
ChangeTags::buildTagFilterWithDropdown fixes the warning.

Currently categories cannot be renamed. The only possible action is to delete
it, create another one (loosing history), and move all pages to the new
category.

There should be a rename action for categories (like renaming pages) which
should also updates all pages in the category, without loosing the category
history.

[Bug 12837] Incorrect MagicVariable hook implementation

--- Comment #7 from Daniel Werner danwe...@web.de 2011-11-08 17:02:13 UTC ---
The patch of attachment 4650 would break lots of compatibility, right now all
functions hooked in return 'true' (or otherwise break things), so if you only
return the $ret value on 'false' returned, all of the current calls, even if
they set $ret, imply they found nothing.
So the best compromise I think would be to always return $ret (it is set to
null before the wfRunHooks() call) and leave the 'false' handling to
wfRunHooks(), so returning 'false' simply would improve performance and won't
break things no longer in versions after the bugfix.

 Is it working for you?

1. In order to get `Creation date' working, you should go to `Special:SMWAdmin'
and push `Initialize or update tables' (wording is not exact).

2. I am not sure, but `Creation date' values do not appear instantly. You have
to edit and save a page to get `Creation date' set.

if you could document this new functionality on the SMW wiki :)

Sure.

The stuff on [[mw:Manual:Footer]] is obviously an example of how to do it,
adapt the technique to whatever you need out of it.

Vector gives each group a separate list, if you want multiple lines you can add
new groups to the first level of the array. And instead of using
$sk-footerLink if you want something other than a link you can just use a
string of html.

$set-data['footerlinks'] = array(

Created attachment 9380
  -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=9380
wfRunHooks() return value no longer implies whether variable value was found.
Only $ret is important.

returning false within hook call will improve performance since it will prevent
wfRunHooks() to do any other calls, returning true still works with old
extensions and has no specific meaning. This wil primarily fix extensions which
have followed the old description on
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Hooks/ParserGetVariableValueSwitch
It allows to improve performance for extensions which do not want to keep
compatibility with previous MW versions by returning false when value found.

Some countries use a known set of language versions of Wikipedia, such as
India. This serves the dual purposes of exposing the most likely languages a
user would want to use in a given country, as well as providing a
mobile-friendly alternative to the wikipedia.org portal page.

Both of these are high-priority ideas for a Wikipedia menu. Featured articles
relate to Wikipedia overall, whereas featured pictures relate to the current
article. This is dependent on UI/UX design regarding a Wikipedia menu, as
described in bug 31399.

[Bug 32271] New: Add GPS coordinates within a location-related category

While GeoNames allows filtering of articles by those with GPS coordinates,
there is no simple way to filter articles that do not have GPS coordinates. The
goal of this bug is to enable searching on categories related to a location's
keywords, then to see the articles in that category that do not have GPS
coordinates. The user can then select an article and add GPS coordinates from
their phone, either through a specific function or possibly by taking a photo.
Related to the idea of articles near me missing photos which can use the
GeoNames database to filter articles near me, as is currently being done by the
Android app.
