FWIW, I tend to agree with others that replacing both with CSS that amounts to actually IS perfectly fine, from a code properness point of view (the two elements don't mean anything semantic, only presentational, i.e. "this is struck-through text", which is precisely what the CSS version means), but I also agree with the counterpoint that it doesn't really buy us anything and make the code longer. No reason to do that if HTML5 will still support as non-deprecated markup. And I concur that they are not interchangeable with . The basic problem I think is that you won't know what templates are in use
until you've expanded all the templates -- at which point it's too late to
expand {{TEMPLATESONTHISPAGE}} or {{#hastemplate:noun}} or such.
Would have similar problems with something like {{#incategory:noun}}.

There's no extra requests for them and they're compressed within the CSS, so don't add much weight -- and since they're already embedded, Firefox doesn't have to go fetch them. I found out that the first problem arises in includes/search/SearchUpdate.php starting at line 64 where external URLs should be stripped. preg_replace destroys the trailing quotation mark and leaves illegal unicode sequence in $text.
