   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 47111
Summary: "Report problem" button does not seem to work
   Product: VisualEditor
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: User Interface
  Assignee: rm...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: tba...@wikimedia.org
CC: jforres...@wikimedia.org, krinklem...@gmail.com,
rm...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

- Edit an article on the English Wikipedia in the VE

- Click "Review and save"

- Click "Something is wrong"

- Enter text into the field and click "report problem"

Nothing happens - either the error report is not sent, or the fact that it was
sent is not conveyed to the user.

Reproduced three times in a current Chromium version (Chromium/25.0.1364.160)
on Ubuntu.

"len": the # operation.

So wouldn't it be a matter of adding __len to the metatable, or is there some
reason this can't be used?

[Bug 22170] Customise Bugzilla front page to have more useful links

2013-04-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22170

I had a vision of a page similar to www.google.com or www.wikipedia.org. That
is, a search input would be the focus of the Bugzilla landing page. This would
be instead of the five large icons and probably without the global sidebar
(copied from Vector).

The proposed redesign currently has two search inputs on the main page (one in
the body area and one global search input at the top of the page). I think this
is a little awkward, though it'd be more awkward to remove either (both are
expected by users now). Unless... you changed the overall design of the page
more dramatically (again, think of www.wikipedia.org vs. en.wikipedia.org).
Plus making a simple search input with "What is your problem?" and requiring
people to search before filing a new bug would be nice (to presumably reduce
the number of duplicate bugs).

On the other hand, Bugzilla search isn't terribly great and the redesign at
has grown on me a little, with the
exception of the really sad search icon
().

Another idea which occurs to me is that we can't discount the notion of "not
good faith". If I am able to run an API process which pops pages off the list,
then I imagine it must be possible to run something to do the opposite - pop an
item onto the list.

It got particularly bad early evening here yesterday (around 18:00 local, which
would be 10:00 UTC) when I would purge the list down to a handful, then after
I'd worked on one the list would be back up to 30-40, sometimes with the same
pages as before. Went round that cycle several times, then after a couple of
hours it went quiet again.

This is something of an epic effort actually. So far these pieces are merged:

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/52033 (core)
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/54338 (core)
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/54350 (core)

These pieces are not yet merged:
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/45499 (cldr, depends on one of the 2 below being
merged first)
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/45294 (core)
-or-
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/45651 (core)

Much of the work over the last few months has been cleaning up MediaWiki's
handling of plurals so that it is compatible with CLDR's timeunit rules. We are
actually very close to pushing something out at this point. I'll probably merge
45651 into core within the next week or so and then 45499.

I have the {{Columns-start|num=4}} markup in place, and it works fine until the
window is wide enough so that all 4 columns can show.

At that point, there is a misalignment.

Here is the page:

Ok, I tried messing around with the Job Queue locally to see if I could
reproduce, and I could not. So either that theory isn't right, or more likely
my config is different from wmf's. (Additionally the volume of things on the
wikipedia seems to suggest it wouldn't be all the time that this happens, but
only occasionally)

[cache-thumbs 2ac3674] (bug 47086) improve image caching

Images were being fetched via NSURLConnection, which is supposed to cache
locally... but even when cached, the results come in asynchronously. This
didn't fit well with the CollectionView scrolling model, which takes over the
UI thread for maximum smoothness.

Now, we explicitly cache thumbs ourselves and load them synchronously if
they're present, leading to a much nicer scrolling experience.

The results returned by mw.loadData are read-only.

It would be nice to have a function that creates a writable local copy of such
data for circumstances where that makes sense. Right now one has to traverse
the structure and copy the key/value pairs individually.

[Bug 47091] Enable strapping-mediawiki skin in mediawiki.org as optional & experimental

2013-04-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47091

I've done a review of the code (and also did quite a bit of fixes to it), but
it still needs a security review.

There's one major reason I didn't enable this on wikitech. It adds the
bootstrap css, but only for that one skin. The CSS can be used in page
contents, but will only modify content layout when that skin is used. It's
possible that people will negatively affect the content by thinking they can
use the bootstrap css in the content.

I'd like to see some framework like bootstrap, but we need to support it in all
skins if we're going to support it.

For "very widely", you mean "a link on a discussion created on October 2012"?
It was never said on pt.wiki that if we don't have consensus it would be
removed or that we need consensus to maintain something that is there for
years. Check how many pt.wiki users are listed above to receive notification
from this bug and you will see that you are not talking to pt.wiki users when
writing here.

If you had previously asked that in community, maybe somebody would point you
to this discussion [1], on which somebody asks to remove captcha, but the
proposal receives lots of opposes. So, it was clear that a large part of
community wanted to keep it. However, this *barely* announced file, where a
couple of non-pt.wiki users decide was used to remove what is part of community
and is being accepted for all this time.

No matter what you decide here, it had no participation of pt.wiki.

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

I cannot reproduce the problem with Google Chrome 24.0.1312.69 on Fedora Linux:
The three pictures are shown horizontally aligned for me.
However, I can reproduce the problem in Firefox when zooming out by two levels,
and in Chrome by zooming out by one level.
I'm not sure if I'd consider this behavior a valid bug though. :)

This is documented: [[mw:Extension:Scribunto/Lua reference

Unfortunately, Lua 5.1 doesn't allow overriding the '#' operator on tables.

If you can reproduce that, that would be much more interesting.

This is due to the search scope we're using for projects. Projects are
groupofnames and so are service groups. So, service groups are showing up as

to be one, rather than sub.

Currently it is hidden via a translucent overlay, thus you can't look at it. It
might also be cropped, so you don't see all of it.

A single thing you can tap somewhere to provide a clear, zoomable view of the

As per CLDR this language (gv) has only one plural form

n mod 10 in 1..2 or n mod 20 is 0

But, in MW, we have 4 plural forms
Form 0 = n mod 20 is 0
Form 1 = n mod 10 is 1
Form 2 = n mod 10 is 2
Form 4 = everything else

This is not at all compatible with CLDR.

Suggestions:
We can inspect how the plural forms are currently used and contact linguists
and native speakers to verify. Depending on the results we can consider whether
we can handle these with 1=foo exceptions or whether we need to push a change
to CLDR.

Please declare all globals used or created in Validator.php. When Validator is
included within a function rather than at file-scope, then the globals are not
being created/referenced correctly. Here's what I added to my version .5
Validator.php to make it work in a wikifarm:

global $wgAPIListModules, $wgAPIModules, $wgActions, $wgAjaxExportList,
$wgAutoloadClasses,
   $wgAvailableRights, $wgDefaultUserOptions, $wgEditPageFrameOptions,

$wgSpecialPageGroups, $wgSpecialPages,
   $wgVersion, $useJQuery, $useJQuery, $wgContentNamespaces
   ;
global $egValidatorSettings, $egParamDefinitions;

I'd agree that it's not a great thing to declare globals that aren't used so
you may refine this as appropriate to Validator.

If we include bundled notifications in the digests, the counts in the headers

When data is accessed through mw.LoadData, and that data contains nested
tables, the # operator (which is approximately but not exactly table length)
does not work correctly.

For example:

data = mw.LoadData( 'Module:MyData' );

Then asking for

#(data.sub_table)

Appears to be consistently wrong. I've worked up an example that seems to like
to show 0 consistently:

http://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module_talk:LoadDataError

Experimenting with more complicated versions of this (i.e. tables nested inside
tables nested inside tables) led to even worse behavior that seemed to point to
uninitialized memory being returned, i.e. random values. It also managed to
trigger the Wikimedia Foundation Error Message in some cases with complaints
about out of memory errors. I'm not really sure why.

We love Vibha's new design for the email digest:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/EmailDigestUX_Leftalignedcategories.png

But the category headers are so long that they are hard to parse and add
unnecessary clutter. Consider these tweaks:
• remove the word 'notifications' after the category headers
• use the same short labels for each category as in preferences (e.g. 'page
link', 'edit revert')
• require developers to specify a plural for those labels as well (e.g. 'page
links', 'edit reverts')

Current requirements for this feature are outlined here, and will be updated
based on our discussions:

We like the short labels used to select notification categories, but think that
users may not understand what they mean. To that end, we discussed:
• add a question mark next to each category
• show a flyout when you hover over the question marks (with a sentence or two
explaining what it means)
• keep short labels, using nouns rather than verbs (e.g. 'page links' instead
of 'linked', or 'edit reverts' instead of 'reverted')

This is high priority, based on our discussion. However, Kaldari points out
that this will also require some core hacking so could delay things a bit.

[Bug 47093] New: Notification archive filters

We are concerned that users may not be able to find important notifications
like talk page messages (particularly if they have a long list of
notifications).

To that end, consider adding filters on the notifications archive page, that
would let you:
• view all notifications (the current approach)
• view only talk page messages (the most important category)
• view other categories (if it's easy to do)

Vibha will investigate design solutions for this proposed feature, and we will
review them as a team, then write up more definitive requirements based on that
discussion.

Note that according to Benny, the existing database structure would not provide
efficient support for Archive filters, because the lookup for archive page or
flyout is mainly done on the notification table which doesn't have any idea
about the event_type ( talk page, mention etc ).

We may need to move that information from the event table to notification table
for fast lookup, and depending on how long we keep the notification records,
the data volume matters. In either case, this would involve a meeting with
Asher/Aaron to go over the implementation details.

For all these reasons, this is a medium priority at this time, but we should be
prepared to move quickly on this, in case en-wiki users request it. So having a
good design in place would be invaluable, as well as a preliminary discussion
with Asher/Aaron, even if we don't have time to develop this right away.

The current notifications archive page can be viewed here on MediaWiki:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Notifications

Its current feature requirements are outlined here, and will be updated based
on our discussions:

Indeed, there was no fix (merged) yet and we don't have long term data either.

[Bug 47092] New: 'Mark all as read'

2013-04-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47092

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 47092
   Summary: 'Mark all as read'
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Echo
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: fflo...@wikimedia.org
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org, bs...@wikimedia.org,
rkald...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

We'd like to give users a button that lets them mark older notifications as
read, so their badge goes back to zero.

This button could go either in the flyout or archive page, or both.

This is a high priority for our first release, because a number of people have
complained about this issue: they see that the badge is showing a number, but
they cannot find the older notification that's causing the issue, because it is
buried deep into the archive, several clicks away.

See our preliminary requirements for this feature:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Echo/Feature_requirements#Mark_all_as_read

[Bug 32135] WAV audio support via TimedMediaHandler

2013-04-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32135

For the first phase of this bug, I think we should just support ingestion of
wav files. I don't think we should not add wav as a transcode target.

This is useful for browser audio recording ( Rahul21 SOC project:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Rahul21/Gsoc ), helps commons be more of
an archive and high bitrate is probably fine for the initial target of in
browser recording of pronunciation.

Since FLAC is loss-less, we could convert to that in the back-end if .wav file
storage ever becomes an issue. Ideally the end user would upload in FLAC, but a
common ingestion format will probably be AAC given mobile capture and upload
support. But we can cross that bridge in a different bug.

For users playing content they should almost always use the .oga or future
lossy compressed formats that we target.

This bug, involves adding a wavMediaHandler to TMH, then TMH will automatically
transcode to oga from the wav file. We could add additional targets FLAC, mp3
etc in the future.

[Bug 47091] Enable strapping-mediawiki skin in mediawiki.org as optional & experimental

2013-04-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47091

I've actually begun porting Zurb Foundation to be a MW skin, so in spirit I
support this idea. Agora is actually being implemented in SASS/Compass (like
Foundation). We need to move to a grid-based interface, we need to have
standardized UI components, and we need to make it easier for developers to use
them without ambiguity or ever having to roll their own elements.

In practice, however, Bootstrap has a lot of things that will make people
unhappy. No semicolons in the JS, non-standard element coercion ( is used
for icons, for example). Nothing that actually breaks the experience since
Bootstrap is pretty solid across browsers, but lots of issues to nitpick over.
And that's just from a developer standpoint.

Regardless, I'm a +1 on this while saying it should be clearly marked as
EXPERIMENTAL and INSPIRATIONAL only :-)
