The problem is unbalanced templates. We could try an approach like my
suggestion at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Requests_for_comment/Allow_styling_in_templates#What_measures_need_to_be_made_to_take_into_account_performance_and_security

Or, we could support template styling only for balanced templates. I'm not
sure if this is detectable/enforceable, but it might also help Parsoid/VE if
there's a way to check it.

[Bug 44394] Account creation interface should not be using helvetica/arial when the rest of the skin does not

> Typography#Arial.3F_18136

We should only use free *web fonts*, since those are actually downloaded to the
user's machine, and we don't distribute proprietary software.

But a CSS font specification does not download anything, it just specifies some
names. The font matcher (e.g. http://linux.die.net/man/1/fc-match or some
similar tool or wrapper thereof) then decides which installed font to use.
This is more analogous to how we support the proprietary IE browser, but do not
actually distribute it.

So I think using a mixture is okay in this case.

Yeah, the notification timestamp is converted to user timezone, while the

No, that is not related. There is a bug though, which I described in bug 53287.

The original bug has since been fixed by making editMode the default everywhere
except in round-trip testing. Closing this bug for that reason.

There should be a tool that allows users to easily migrate existing books over

Actually, that's probably just because i was visiting a pretty busy page, and
maybe someone else had started rendering it in the time between my browser
following the redirect from ?action=purge to the real page. Anyhow, ignore what
i said above.

Problem is probably really complicated templates that need to be optimized (The
templates take so long to render, that the page times out). Using lua for
templates will probably result in a big speed boost.

[Bug 53284] New: Update markTreeBuilderFixups pass to work without relying on metas being unfostered out of tables

Bug ID: 53284
Summary: Update markTreeBuilderFixups pass to work without
relying on metas being unfostered out of tables
   Product: Parsoid
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: DOM
  Assignee: gwi...@wikimedia.org
  Reporter: ssas...@wikimedia.org
CC: abrea...@wikimedia.org, canan...@wikimedia.org,
ssas...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

markTreeBuilderFixups analyzes the DOM and tries to find opening and closing
tags added automatically by the tree builder (where they didn't exist in the
token stream) and unbalanced closing tags that got deleted (where they were
present in the token stream).

To do this, it adds shadow meta tags following opening/closing tags in the HTML
token stream fed into the HTML tree builder and sees if the shadow meta has a
corresponding tag in the DOM or if a tag is missing its shadow for its
analysis. However, this analysis requires the shadows to be around at the same
place where they were inserted in the HTML token stream.

Foster-parenting complicates this issue since the shadow metas can be hoisted
out of the table which is the reason why we've hacked the HTML tree builder to
not foster metas.

But, it might be possible to do the analysis without relying on shadow-meta
position. For example, by assigning ids to tags and associating that id with
the shadow-meta might work (or not since tree builder might clone inserted
tags). Or maybe the position can be inferred from the position in the foster
box. Not sure. This is the problem that needs to be solved. Once solved
satisfactorily, our fostering hack in the HTML5 library can be removed.

A lot of wt2html and wt2wt results crucially rely on this information, so
parser tests should accurately tell you what is working or not -- you can test
it by turning off the markTreeBuilderFixups pass and see what happens.

[Bug 53283] New: UpWiz should provide meaningful error message if file upload failed because an empty request was issued

2013-08-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53283

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 53283
Summary: UpWiz should provide meaningful error message if file
upload failed because an empty request was issued
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: UploadWizard
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: rainerril...@hotmail.com
CC: bawolff...@gmail.com, fflo...@wikimedia.org,
mtrac...@member.fsf.org, nischay...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Orinal bug title:
UpWiz should provide meaningful error message if file upload failed because an
empty request was issued

Empty requests are issued, for example, if the browser cannot read the file due
to missing read permission (but you can select them if you have the
enumerate-files-permission for that folder).

The result of the request is also empty. This triggers a JavaScript error at
https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-UploadWizard/blob/6b1ba63356be72188bf9fb95f6d165381ee8f9de/resources/mw.UploadWizardUpload.js#L175
where result.error is undefined.

This makes UpWiz "spinning" foreever without telling the user that something
went wrong.

Tested with Firefox 23 and Windows 7.

We currently don't strip empty table rows, which seems to be done in some
conditions in the PHP parser + tidy combo. We could emulate this behavior in
templated content and maybe also outside of templated content, but will need to
avoid dirty diffs and preserve WYSIWYG behavior even when another row is added
in VE.

> Both syntaxes should be retained as is when roundtripping.

This should already be the case in Parsoid. I just verified this at
http://parsoid.wmflabs.org/_rtform/. Pawn insertion would a DOM modification in
VE.

This is a great idea. We are currently logging preference settings and changes
sitewide to analyze and audit in order to refactor them into fewer more clearly
organized sections and remove options that are not used, as well as making sure
that the defaults for new users are best suited for their needs.

We'll add this to the list of things to evaluate when this work begins.

[Bug 51912] Make Wikipedia distinct by styling of a prominent UI feature differently than the default

Quim Gil changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||q...@wikimedia.org

This would be useful, yes. Note that 3rd party wikis look a lot like Wikipedia
not only because both use the same Vector skin by default, but al because it is
damn complex for an average 3rd party to depart from it:

* Configuring or customizing Vector skin isn't trivial. Likely customizations
like how to apply fixed width, change colors, change the header/footer, modify
the size of fonts... are not documented and require to look deep in the CSS to
see what needs to be changed at MediaWiki:Common.css. You may need to modify
the skin itself, and forking Vector and take care of diffs when upgrading is
not something most people want to do.

* Selecting a different skin is even more complicated for an average 3rd party.
There are basically no skins out there that would give the confidence in terms
of stability, adoption and current support. When you use a MediaWiki skin found
somewhere you are basically on your own, not even able to know whether such
skin covers Vector's functionality (e.g. does it work in older MS Explorer
versions).

Therefore yes, a custom look & feel for Wikimedia sites is one step. But
actually the right solution is to provide the enablers for proper MediaWiki
customization. Look at http://wordpress.org or http://drupal.org . They don't
look much different than their software out of the box, but the difference is
that Wordpress and Drupal admins can start customizing right away, and get a
very different looking site wits a few simple steps.
