[Bug 46613] the hebrew translation for #ifexpr is borked, breaking tons of templates
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46613 --- Comment #12 from kipod --- i still think that it will be a good idea to teach the bot that moves stuff from traslatewiki to mediawiki code base to create both variants when the original string contains either underline or space. the original "fix" from Siebrand (the one that was reverted) seems like it's possible to have multiple names (aliases?) for the same keyword/magic word. if this is indeed so, changing the bot that moves stuff from translatewiki to mediawiki seems to be the best solution peace. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. It is difficult for an average person with an average screen, and I guess it is even harder with users with visual impairment. See for instance https://ca.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anarquisme_a_Espanya&curid=1010721&diff=12614384&oldid=12591573 The current colors are fine to mark changes in text since the text itself is marked in bold. However, in the case of spaces there are no characters involved. One solution could be to use only in this situation the darker version of the same colors that is being used for the border of the box of the paragraphs changed. Without changing any color scheme, this would provide enough contrast to find easily those single spaces in diffs. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Slow by today's standards but it should be fine for using a search engine. When suggestions are enabled (as they always are after bug 52812) the delay between typing a letter and having it show up in the text box is no longer imperceptible. This has to do with the "computation" not the "display", i.e. it happens when I hide them with .suggestions {display:none !important;} Suggestions on Google and YouTube cause the same delay so it might not be possible to fix this and keep the feature mandatory. Something else that I've only seen on slower machines is trouble with holding down the backspace key. This used to erase a search perfectly. Since bug 52812, the search string will only disappear when you release the key. [Bug 58312] OAuth extension should register currently active change tags
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58312 --- Comment #6 from Brad Jorsch --- Did we make a decision on Bartosz's change in semantics of ChangeTags::listDefinedTags(), making it effectively ChangeTags::listActiveTags() instead (and therefore making it impossible to have a defined tag that isn't "active" or an "active" tag that isn't pre-defined)? If we're going to keep that change in semantics, then all someone has to do is add a hook function for ListDefinedTags that dumps the proper subset of possible OAuth tags into $tags. And someone needs to decide if "the proper subset" contains consumers that are still pending approval but might be being used by the creator and/or consumers that are approved but have made no logged actions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 52812] Remove "Disable search suggestions" user preference from MediaWiki core
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52812 --- Comment #16 from Connor Behan --- [I messed up the quoting above] First, I need to say that the algorithm is not my issue. People who dislike non-neutral and non-standard suggestions will continue to dislike them whether they trigger after one character or three. Therefore I am not the right person to file bugs about the algorithm itself. Leave that to someone who actually likes the suggestion feature. (In reply to comment #11) > When entering data, most input systems seem to have a more efficient means > (return key, for example) of submitting the input. As also noted on the > village pump, hitting the escape key, etc. can re-reveal the go and search > buttons, though I agree that this is a valid Monobook bug and should probably > be filed separately (if a separate bug doesn't exist already). One should not have to do extra work to click these buttons. The separate one is bug 13941 and has been open for five years. If you or another dev can decide upon the best way to fix that, we should do that as soon as possible. Then my list of arguments against mandatory search suggestions will go down from about 10 to 9. > No, I'm sorry, but this is a nonsense argument. The nature of browser > rendering is that everyone's experience will be slightly different based on > countless factors for the same site (e.g., en.wikipedia.org). It'll be even > more diverse across multiple sites (Wikipedia, YouTube, etc.). It's always > been this way. It's a perfectly valid argument. Yes, after the days of ftp and usenet, the web experience has involved many sites with a different look and feel. And despite this, certain UI widgets like radio buttons, checkboxes, drop-down lists and text boxes (where there is no need for them to differ between sites) have been standardized by HTML tags like "input". When a website switches from these to custom AJAX widgets that do the same thing, users are absolutely correct to say that this is a functionality regression. It would be too hard for me to solve this problem on YouTube, Google, etc. I save my battles for the sites developed by small, reasonable teams that I respect. Wikipedia is using browser rendered widgets wherever possible. The suggestion box below the search box is the only example on the entire site (and one of the few examples on the web) of a native widget "spawning" a non-native one. It is this juxtaposition that really hurts aesthetics. > And we can consider scrapping the entire feature, if it's really as damaging > to neutrality as you suggest (though I think that argument is a bit flawed). > However, in all of these cases, I do not think adding a per-user on/off switch > really helps matters. We should either fix or kill the feature for everyone. Well this would certainly decrease code bloat wouldn't it? If killing the feature is on the table, I would first invert the option so that users have to specifically enable suggestions to see them. Then another dataset could be used to make sure there isn't a huge blowback. Would it help to move suggestions into a gadget? If suggestions were removed from the core, I would gladly write a gadget for users who don't mind sacrificing a bit of neutrality in exchange for faster searches. > Probably true. :-) But when we look at code and interface complexity versus > requiring that the few users who want to hide these easily can (using > per-user CSS or JS), I don't really buy the argument for an additional > checkbox here. I don't think this is a solution. If you hide suggestions with CSS, the "autocomplete" attribute is still off. This means that no search history shows up like it used to. This strange behaviour of the search box is a constant reminder of the fact that you are using a hack to fix something. I'm sure JS can be used to turn "autocomplete" back on, but using one JS hack to undo another would slow down the experience even more. Speaking of a slower experience, when I was typing searches into Wikipedia with the CSS applied, there was a noticeable time delay for letters to show up. This is because suggestions were still refining themselves when they were invisible. And just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, I tried something else. Holding down the backspace button to erase a search doesn't work right away with invisible suggestions. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58770 --- Comment #4 from Erik Moeller --- Duh :-) Yes, you're right of course, unless we make it easy to strip metadata completely, this won't help much with privacy and indeed might mislead users into thinking otherwise. EXIF privacy probably requires a more systematic approach, such as a per-file indicator saying "This files includes embedded metadata" which, when clicked, makes it possible to selectively remove fields (which should also remove them from any templates they're automatically parsed into). Does that sound reasonable? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 46613] the hebrew translation for #ifexpr is borked, breaking tons of templates
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46613 Rotem Liss changed: What|Removed |Added CC||roteml...@gmail.com --- Comment #10 from Rotem Liss --- I deleted "MediaWiki:Sp-translate-data-MagicWords" in translatewiki.net, that seems to have caused this bug (twice). It is far too late now to break backwards compatibility and remove a translated magic word that was translated in 2006 (or maybe 2007), just because of technical problems in translatewiki.net. Please note that removing the space does not solve the problem, and anyway, is not standard in Hebrew. Therefore, the original magic word should be added back. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 13941] AJAX drop-down search (MWSuggest) obscures Go and Search buttons
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13941 Jack Phoenix changed: What|Removed |Added Priority|Low |Lowest CC||j...@countervandalism.net --- Comment #5 from Jack Phoenix --- This bug fails to address one question: *why* is this a bug? The bug title basically answers the question, "what happens [when you click on the search bar and start writing]?" but not why it's considered problematic. Let's be clear here: I don't know -- nor care -- why the user preference was introduced in the first place, but mistakes happen even to the best of us, and that user preference was obviously one. Connor, you clearly care enough about this bug and appear to know JavaScript based on comment 4. Therefore I suggest that you write a gadget that overrides the main search suggestions handler to disable search suggestions on Monobook. Moving search suggestions to a gadget is simply unacceptable for various reasons, which include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. said functionality has been present in core for many releases and it's proven useful 2. it's also been enabled for default for quite a while and removing it all of a sudden would not only provide an inconsistent user experience, but break extensions and site scripts relying on the associated jQuery code being present and available for use in core Something like this should suffice and it'll make the people concerned with the "disable search suggestions" being removed happy enough by providing similar functionality via JS: $( document ).ready( function() { if ( mw.config.get( 'skin' ) == 'monobook' ) { $( '#searchInput' ).unbind(); } } ); -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 52812] Remove "Disable search suggestions" user preference from MediaWiki core
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52812 --- Comment #15 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) --- Conner I don't know that we have a 1Ghz machine to test that on, thankfully we have users like you who can tell us what the system does on machines like that. Performance certainly isn't something we want to sacrifice there. Two things, can you let us know if other sites like google for instance which have type ahead have similar slow down issues while typing? 2nd can you log a separate bug that when type-ahead search is enabled that it causes lags or hangs for you when typing? that seems best tackled as a separate bug rather than part of this one. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
