LiquidThreads adds a test to the watchlist query to exclude its Thread
namespace:

In ULS's "Select language" box (accessed by clicking the "English" button next
to one's username on wikis such as Wikidata), clicking on one of the regions
("America", "Asia/Pacific", etc, in the map) causes the entire page to scroll
down so that the top of the page is at the top of the relevant header, pushing
the rest of the Select language box (including the search box and map), and
much of the background page, off screen.
A preferable behavior, I think, would be to just have the box containing the
languages (.uls-language-list) scroll down to the header, without moving the
surrounding page.

A machine that I frequently use to edit Wikipedia is 900MHz (not 1GHz as I
originally thought). Slow by today's standards but it should be fine for using
a search engine. When suggestions are enabled (as they always are after bug
52812) the delay between typing a letter and having it show up in the text box
is no longer imperceptible. This has to do with the "computation" not the
"display", i.e. it happens when I hide them with
.suggestions {display:none !important;}
Suggestions on Google and YouTube cause the same delay so it might not be
possible to fix this and keep the feature mandatory.
Something else that I've only seen on slower machines is trouble with holding
down the backspace key. This used to erase a search perfectly. Since bug 52812,
the search string will only disappear when you release the key. This does not
happen on Google so it should be fixable.

Yes, after the days of ftp and usenet, the web experience has involved many sites with a different look and feel. And despite this, certain UI widgets like radio buttons, checkboxes, drop-down lists and text boxes (where there is no need for them to differ between sites) have been standardized by HTML tags like "input". When a website switches from these to custom AJAX widgets that do the same thing, users are absolutely correct to say that this is a functionality regression. It would be too hard for me to solve this problem on YouTube, Google, etc. I save my battles for the sites developed by small, reasonable teams that I respect. Wikipedia is using browser rendered widgets wherever possible. The suggestion box below the search box is the only example on the entire site (and one of the few examples on the web) of a native widget "spawning" a non-native one. I don't think this is a solution. If you hide suggestions with CSS, the "autocomplete" attribute is still off. This means that no search history shows up like it used to. This strange behaviour of the search box is a constant reminder of the fact that you are using a hack to fix something. I'm sure JS can be used to turn "autocomplete" back on, but using one JS hack to undo another would slow down the experience even more. Speaking of a slower experience, when I was typing searches into Wikipedia with the CSS applied, there was a noticeable time delay for letters to show up. This is because suggestions were still refining themselves when they were invisible. And just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, I tried something else. Holding down the backspace button to erase a search doesn't work right away with invisible suggestions. This bug fails to address one question: *why* is this a bug? The bug title
basically answers the question, "what happens [when you click on the search bar
and start writing]?" but not why it's considered problematic.
Let's be clear here: I don't know -- nor care -- why the user preference was
introduced in the first place, but mistakes happen even to the best of us, and
that user preference was obviously one.
Connor, you clearly care enough about this bug and appear to know JavaScript
based on comment 4. Therefore I suggest that you write a gadget that overrides
the main search suggestions handler to disable search suggestions on Monobook.
Moving search suggestions to a gadget is simply unacceptable for various
reasons, which include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. said functionality has been present in core for many releases and it's
proven useful
2. it's also been enabled for default for quite a while and removing it all of
a sudden would not only provide an inconsistent user experience, but break
extensions and site scripts relying on the associated jQuery code being present
and available for use in core
Something like this should suffice and it'll make the people concerned with the
"disable search suggestions" being removed happy enough by providing similar
functionality via JS:
