Travellers have a sense of what is interesting, but they have roaming charges preventing them from using this app. Solution: 1. Prepare the pics for upload (title, categories, etc) but do not upload them yet. 2. There is some discussion in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Infobox_Image and it seems to me that the infoboxes with issues were ones that assumed a fixed width even though they didn't specify an explicit width bound, which was hostile to user customization. Remember: if you don't specify an explicit size, you are requesting that MW choose an "appropriate size", which could be anything -- and will likely vary on mobile, hi-density devices, user preference, etc. If that's not actually what you wanted, then yes you should be specifying size explicitly. That said, I am interested in continuing discussion on image options in general. There have been various RfCs proposing a more semantic set of image options, which would allow resizing in a more meaningful way than the current inflexible "default thumb size". It's fine, I'm just not convinced this is a good idea with:
* the current state of {{reflist}} (or equivalent) vs.
* the assumption that references will always be at the absolute bottom of the
page (often it's followed by external links, subject navigation templates,
etc.)
* making changes to the document without the user explicitly triggering them
Perhaps it would be okay with some detailed explanation to the user (maybe a
warning beforehand, perhaps with a checkbox they can untick to prevent it or
something, or maybe just a notification dialog of some sort after it's done).
But we it should be clearly thought out and established here how that should be
handled.
Right now, VE does the same thing as the wikitext editor in this respect - i.e.
nothing. Perhaps even just a note on the new reference dialog saying "You'll
need to add a /{{reflist}} otherwise this will error when
saving." could solve the underlying issue here.

Let's walk before we run, and think of the audience before we get too hung up in site politics.
