Upon further investigation we discovered that skins are limited to menus / categories and so on and don't have effect on body content.

I found that wikibase:box works ok if used with literal "Point(..)"^^geo:wktLiteral.
However wikibase:around didnt work with literals - it returns zero results.
So geospacial searching only works in very limited cases.

Based on a conversation with @thiemowmde (thanks a lot for your help!), the front-end should be implemented via the following steps:
a MediaWiki extension for Wikibase. Fork the repo, add the extension as a folder in the project root;
