GWicke added a comment. In T157014#3168034, @daniel wrote: AFAIK we do have infrastructure for running node servers with proper caching, as part of the rest services layer. If you create endpoints that return structured data you could consume those from the PHP backend or the JS client. We have node based rendering infrastructure, but as far as I know, we cannot use them to directly serve page views. Because a) all the skin/chrome stuff is done in PHP and b) we currently only use node when editing, and don't have the server capacity to handle several orders of magnitude more hits that would be needed for serving page views. We aren't using node for UI rendering at scale, but at the API level the REST API is seeing 15 minute averages of more than 6k requests per second most days. This is comparable to the action API: https://grafana-admin.wikimedia.org/dashboard/db/api-summary?orgId=1=now-30d=now The vast majority of this traffic is driven by read views and data retrieval. Cache hit rate is already ~95%, and rising with traffic levels. So, we can use node.js to render stuff, but we still need to loop it through PHP to add chrome. This depends on the roll-out strategy. The standard chrome elements are actually not *that* hard to replace. Long tail special-case interfaces rendered in the content area like special pages etc will take longer, or might not make sense to re-do at all. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T114596. We also need caching for this on the same level as the parser cache. That could be done on the HTTP level between PHP and node. Does this exist? We touched on this in the mail thread. Most API responses and server-side UI renders for anonymous users would be cached in the CDN / Varnish.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T157014EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: GWickeCc: GWicke, Aleksey_WMDE, daniel, Niedzielski, Magnus, Milimetric, Prtksxna, Fjalapeno, phuedx, Jdlrobson, siddharth11, Capt_Swing, TheDJ, Jdforrester-WMF, SBisson, WMDE-leszek, Volker_E, Krinkle, gabriel-wmde, Jonas, thiemowmde, Lydia_Pintscher, Jan_Dittrich, Jhernandez, Jdrewniak, Aklapper, QZanden, Salgo60, SamanthaNguyen, JGirault, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331, Jay8g___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

daniel added a comment. AFAIK we do have infrastructure for running node servers with proper caching, as part of the rest services layer. So, we can use node.js to render stuff, but we still need to loop it through PHP to add chrome. We also need caching for this on the same level as the parser cache. That could be done on the HTTP level between PHP and node. Does this exist? I still think that this kind of thing is viable right now only for an editing interface. For full page views, this needs more work, see T111588: RFC: API-driven web front-end.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T157014EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: danielCc: GWicke, Aleksey_WMDE, daniel, Niedzielski, Magnus, Milimetric, Prtksxna, Fjalapeno, phuedx, Jdlrobson, siddharth11, Capt_Swing, TheDJ, Jdforrester-WMF, SBisson, WMDE-leszek, Volker_E, Krinkle, gabriel-wmde, Jonas, thiemowmde, Lydia_Pintscher, Jan_Dittrich, Jhernandez, Jdrewniak, Aklapper, QZanden, Salgo60, SamanthaNguyen, JGirault, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331, Jay8g___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T162594: Introduce MessageLocalizer interface to remove dependency on IContextSource in DiffView and friends.
daniel created this task.daniel added projects: Wikidata, I18n.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTIONDiffView and BasicEntityDiffVisualizer rely on IContextSource for fetching system messages. IContextSource is a terrible kitchen sink, it drag in a whole bunch of dependencies that we don't need. Also, a IContextSource is hard to come by in some contexts. I propose to introduce a MessageLocalizer interface (along with a MediaWikiMessageLocalizer implementation) that exposes a msg() method, just like the one exposed by IContextSource. Or we define getWikitext and getHtml methods that return strings. That would be a bit nicer (no Message object mess), but a bit more work, and we'll need to think about the semantics of parameter escaping. Also, an interface exposing a msg() method just like IContextSource could be moved to MW core, to replace usages of IContextSource there. WikibaseRepo (and perhaps WikibaseClient) would supply two instances, one for the user language, and one for the content language. DiffView and friends would use the user language.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162594EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: danielCc: Ladsgroup, Aklapper, daniel, QZanden, Salgo60, MuhammadShuaib, Izno, Psychoslave, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Gryllida, Shizhao, Arrbee, Mbch331, Jay8g___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T162588: Decide whether base data URI should be defined for foreign repositories
WMDE-leszek created this task.WMDE-leszek added projects: Wikidata, Wikidata-Sprint.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTIONhttps://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/346516/ has suggested to define base data URI for each repository. It turns out that RdfVocabulary is currently not used to generate data URIs of foreign entities, so only base part of data URI is needed for local repository only. Currently it is a canonical URL of Special:EntityPage of local repo, and such URI is passed as a data URI base to RdfVocabulary. Although data URIs for foreign entities are currently not used, @daniel said in his comment on https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/346516 the following: My current thinking is that we should declare the base data URIs for each repo, and perhaps RdfVocabulary should even know about them, even though we don't currently need them. The rationale is that the RdfVocabulary should provide all information needed to represent data from or in any of the known repos, and should not know or care about which info about which repo is used when or where. This ticket is about discussing whether we want to require base part of data URI to be defined for all configured repositories, not only the local repo.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162588EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: WMDE-leszekCc: Lydia_Pintscher, WMDE-leszek, Aklapper, daniel, QZanden, Salgo60, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Marostegui added a comment. I will start this once it is deployed. Please note that we (the DBAs) have decided to put ourselves some dates to stop maintenance before the DC switchover and the switch back. That is the 12th (until the 20th) of April and 28th April until the 4th of May, at those days we will stop any maintenance until the switchover is done. So this change will take a bit longer because of that maintenance freeze. Given that this only needs to be done on wikidata, I believe we should have no problem to get it done in eqiad while it is the standby datacenter. Specially on the master which is the hard part. Please let us know once the patch is merged and we will start it.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T162539EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MarosteguiCc: jcrespo, Marostegui, WMDE-leszek, Lydia_Pintscher, daniel, Aklapper, gerritbot, aude, Ladsgroup, QZanden, Salgo60, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, Mbch331, Krenair___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
