TASK DESCRIPTIONIn T177353, we were asked to get a count of files with unhelpful names. To identify unhelpful file names, we can extract the old and new file names from the move log whose change reason is meaningless or ambiguous, and then train a classification model.

Putting this project in the backlog now. TASK DESCRIPTIONCurrently, only main namespace in Wikidata is in content index, and the rest are in general index. However, properties are similar by nature to items, and probably have similar text structures in labels/descriptions, which are unlike text structure on other wiki pages such as Wikidata: or Help: pages.

This is a well known feature of parser functions (That they add newlines). The behaviour is very controversial, but is probably here to stay for back compatibility if nothing else. See T14974

Just use the wfEscapeWikitext() global function (Defined in includes/GlobalFunctions.php), that's the standard solution the rest of MediaWiki uses.

Well you've also got percent encoding behaves weirdly in usernames. Some parts of MediaWiki use the '#' to make "fake" users (Especially the blocking code), but that's not relavent in this context.  at the beginning of a line generates an . Urls cause all sorts of weird stuff to happen (But not inside a link). I would also add "be compatible with extension.json" as a goal.

The reason is that these profiles (generally a set of weigths) are vebose and tends to pollute the php code in the wmf-config

I think we could have separate config files in config repo if the profiles grow big. 
OTOH, generally speaking, having too many parameters that need to be tuned makes it hard to manage in general. I’m only half joking – I think this fix does make some sense, since AutoCommentFormatter has no idea which arguments need to be escaped and which don’t (it just does the same thing for all messages), while the individual messages know what each argument means. That said, this is clearly a hack, and what’s worse, a hack that’s shown to all of our translators. Are there any other possible usernames that cause a bug like this? I could only find ;dl, definition list syntax (which is also only effective due to the {{GENDER}} template, and would otherwise have no special meaning in the middle of a line).

Well, it would fix the * bug. It won’t necessarily fix any other problems that may occur because we’re sending unescaped user names into a parsed message.

The curious thing is that I couldn’t reproduce this bug with a user named '''bold'''. It seems like in that case, the autocomment we get from MediaWiki already contains  instead of '. Hm, looks like that’s just standard behavior for any template (I tried it with foo{{identity|*bar}}, where Template:identity is just {{{1}}}). Odd, but not a bug.

But this suggests that moving the username out of the {{GENDER}} should be enough to fix the bug. If I understand it correctly, we’re not actually making use of the {{GENDER}} here – it’s just used in the English version of the message to give translators a hint that they can use the function, but they will not apply it to the username itself. For example, the Portuguese translation of wikibase-entity-summary-restore is

Restaurar a revisão $3 {{GENDER:$4|do utilizador|da utilizadora}} [[Special:Contributions/$4|$4]]

Hm, {{GENDER}} doesn’t seem to support usernames with asterisks anyways – if I’m not mistaken, they’re treated as “unknown gender”. Hm, I’m not sure how to solve this. {{GENDER}} needs the unescaped username, but then how can we also include the username in the message without it being parsed? But I have no idea if this breaks something else – it’s possible that some of the message parameters should be interpreted as Wikitext. (As far as I can tell, AutoCommentFormatter itself has no idea what the parameters mean – it just extracts the partial message key and the parameters from the edit summary and combines them. So it’s also possible that the escaping should happen before writing the username to the edit summary.)

@Bawolff if you think this is unlikely to be an XSS, perhaps you can make the task public and let the rest of the Wikidata team have a look? (I agree, FWIW, I just thought “better safe than sorry”.)

@Smalyshev Ok, we aim to have the cluster handling all prod traffic by end of next  quarter, until then it will be mirroing data which i think should be sufficient for you to get started in the wdqs consumer? I am interested in mentoring this one, but I would need help if this was to have more than a few instances available.

To simplify the task a little, I have created items for all the GCI orgs which were missing from Wikidata, and they all appear on https://gci-leaders.netlify.com/ .

There was a WikipediaWeekly thread a while ago that I started about "create a Wikipedia article about " , which I am trying to dig up.

This task involves editing a live database, and any mistakes may immediately impact thousands of other users around the globe.  Care and caution are required.  Communicate with your mentors.

Uses a caching mechanism for subjects items (QIDs) to ensure efficiency.
The cache gets updated in 2 different ways:


dataset-specific, in case of an operation on the Ingestion API, e.g., when a new dataset is uploaded;
database-wide, runs with a fixed schedule.


N.B.: the database-wide update is not bound to the Curation API, as it would heavily affect approval/rejection of statements. A decent place for profiles has always been a pain and I could not find something sane. I'd like to address (improve) this problem adding a ProfileManager in cirrus.

The goal would be:


have sane defaults (generic profiles) provided in cirrus and/or wikibase that do not pollute the config
allow easy customizations both by extension developpers and wikiadmins (e.g. today extension developers have to munge the config in various places to inject their profiles)
tentative: try not to pollute wmf-config with verbose and unreadable configs but only set a reference to the profile you want to use (like we do for ltr)


At a glance I'd see 3 possible stores we could use to save the profiles "blobs".


In the code itself for generic profiles, cirrus would provide sane defaults for a "standard wiki", wikibase would provide sane defaults as well
In the cirrus config by using existing config keys provided by cirrus, would be empty by default
In the extension config, the extension could expose config vars to tune (this ticket)


Then I'd like to explore the possibility to store profile blobs in the cirrus metastore index. The reason is that these profiles (generally a set of weigths)  are vebose and tends to pollute the php code in the wmf-config. Looks like a fallback issue. Since there was no 'jv' translations for #mediawiki-extensions-scribunto it used 'id' translations as fallback language. Now that they got their own translations added, the system does not continue to use 'id'. Never ran into this issue so not sure how to fix it but maybe this is a Wikidata chaching issue?
