[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T194822: [WIP] Multiple Explorer Dialogs

2018-06-01 Thread Smalyshev
Smalyshev added a comment.
Should I add an alert or a message that is displayed when a user tries to open a dialog that is already open?

Do you mean the one with the item ID same as one of the opened dialogs? I see two possibilities here:

Focus (bring to foreground, etc.) the dialog that has the same item ID
Just create a new one, regardless of what is already open

I am leaning towards the latter option - as one can change what is displayed in the dialogs, it may be legitimate case to open more than one and then do separate changes to them. I don't think we should prevent it.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T194822EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: prssanna, SmalyshevCc: Lydia_Pintscher, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Smalyshev, Jonas, Aklapper, prssanna, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, Salgo60, Xmlizer, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

TASK DESCRIPTIONKNIME is a free, but top, data analytics, reporting and integration platform that "allows assembly of nodes blending different data sources, including preprocessing (ETL: Extraction, Transformation, Loading), for modeling, data analysis and visualization without, or with only minimal, programming".

It would be great to have some read/write KNIME nodes to interact with Wikidata so that average users can use/analyze Wikidata and populate/edit it using visual ETL processes.

Instructions for developers are available here.

TASK DESCRIPTIONIn order to make any research into improving Wikidata search, we want to know what the users are selecting when using Wikidata prefix search. Unfortunately, right now there is no data set which allows to know that. We want to add event collections that would do the following:

Once the user performed completion search and clicked on certain item (either in top search box or entity selector), we want to record:

search results presented to the user
the result that the user selected
context (whether it was top box, entity selector, etc.) - we need to see how much of it we want here

TBD:

do we want to enable it for all users?
do we want linking to search query logs? (looks like currently not)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T196172: Test schema migration script

daniel created this task.daniel triaged this task as "Normal" priority.daniel added projects: Wikidata, Structured-Data-Commons, Multi-Content-Revisions (MCR-SDC phase 1).
TASK DESCRIPTIONBefore attempting the schema conversion on a live system, want to run the populateContentTables script against the test databases on db and db1112.

The tricky bit is to figure out how to best run a script against a "non-standard" db. Also, before running the schema migration (stage 2), we'll have to create the tables (stage 0) and clean up the archive table (stage 1).

Then running the script, the first things we are interested in are

does it run smoothly and
how long does it take
how long does it take to re-run it on an already converted db

If needed, we can reset the test by simply truncating the relevant tables (slots, content, content_models, and slot_roles).

Of course, we'll want to know whether the conversion was actually successful. That's not really easy to tell, but as a fist sanity check, I'd assert that

the slots table and the content table have the same number of rows (this should be the case right after conversion).
that number is the number of rows in the revision table + the number of rows in the archive table.
slot_roles contains one row (for "main")
content_models contains entries not just for wikitext, but also for JS and CSS pages.
the content row for *.js and *.css pages in NS_MEDIAWIKI and NS_USER have the correct content model.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T195740: Decide on a way forward for acceptable languages for lemmas and representations

2018-06-01 Thread ArthurPSmith
ArthurPSmith added a comment.
I am in general favorable to Micru's proposal, and perhaps Pamputt's elaboration of it above: using wikidata items directly allows representation of the lemma language naturally in the user's own script/language for one, and other automatic bonuses of using items given the structured data ethos etc.. However I'm a little confused about the details of how this would work - specifically, the most commonly used lexemes would usually have the same spelling, use etc. across all variants of a language; do we give that a more general language ("en" = Q1860 say) and only use the specific items mentioned ("en-US" = Q7976, "en-GB" = Q7979, "en-CA" = Q44676, etc.) where there really are variations? Or would it be possible to attach multiple language items to a single lexeme, to indicate it applies to several specific variants?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T195740EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: ArthurPSmithCc: ArthurPSmith, Pamputt, Liuxinyu970226, Micru, VIGNERON, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

TASK DESCRIPTIONWhen entering an image from Commons as a value for P18, and copy/pasting the exact name of a file, the correct file should be the only one (or at least the first one) appearing in the list of suggestions. That's not the case for some files when there are other files with a similar name.

Method:

I add a new statement with P18
I click on the value field and copy/paste the title of the file (without File:)
I observe what appears in the suggestions menu

I agree that the unit text box suggester should give items from the unit subclass tree. Is there a ticket for that? Same for the language suggester box, it should suggest items that are subclass of language.

I would prefer not to waste more time (especially as there will be quickly much much more lexemes than there is units values).

The unit seems to me the worst possible example: the suggestion gives you everything, not just units (this is very confusing for the new editors, we frequently have question about that), the result is often a mess and wikidatians spend a lot of times to build and solve the constraints. As explained in my prevuious message, I agree we need to specify at least language and script. For the rest (country, orthography reform, ...), I think the best way to store this kind of information is to use property in the lexeme itself. The advantages of the property is it is really flexible and so we can decide a psoteriori what kind of information we want to store in one lexeme.

Indeed, property is a good idea but how would you deal with Alptraum / Albtraum?
And why not doing both, the current tagging and properties? (same for Lexical Category and Grammatical features, the need for both as already been discussed)

Let us take the example of the "de-CH-1996" code, am I supposed to use this code only for word in Swiss German followinf the 1996 reform?

Obviously yes

If the same lexeme is used both in Swiss German and in "standard German", should I use this code.

Obviously not.

If a Swiss German lexeme has not been modified by the 1996 reform, should I use "de-CH-1996", "de-CH" or both.

de-CH (or another more precise tag), both is impossible as a lemma can only have one language (if there is two lang, it's not one lemma, it's two lemmata).

All are valid and I think it will be really difficult to managed.

Yes all codes are valid but they don't mean the same thing.

Where is the difficulty here? More exactly: how is it less difficult than properties? (see all the wars on some WD items, on Wiktionaries or among the scholars, no reason that this will be magically solved on Wikidata, either by the codes or by properties)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T195740EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: VIGNERONCc: Pamputt, Liuxinyu970226, Micru, VIGNERON, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

In T195740#4237172, @VIGNERON wrote:
Tough questions.

Caveat: I'm not an expert (feel free to correct me), but I cam across several languages issues in my decade and half as Wikimedian.

My point of view is that the current system for the monolingual text is good but not enough for the lexemes needs. One (anecdotal) example, the 'fro' and 'frm' codes have been approved (in a week T181823, sometimes it can takes months), and they have added month ago but still not fully integrate (you need to enter the code itself, it's not possible to just add the name of the language). For items, I understand the caution and we can wait to be sure, but for lexemes this seem to slow to me.

I like the idea of « list of item that have instance of/subclass of language » but that's not enough as it didn't take into account the script.

In the end, I think the we need to go closer to the IETF BCP 47 system of tag (a world-wide standard, already used by a lot of online dictionaries and well documented, see BCP 47 text). We need several lists : one for language (ISO 639-1), one for territories (ISO 3166), one for script (ISO 15924, here the list is quite short) and maybe others subtags (dialects, variants and private uses). This is important for precisely reflect the lemmas, like French before or after the 1990 reform, German before/after the 1996 reform ; de-CH-1996 is gave as an example in the BCP 47 itself.

More importantly we need the ability to combine these lists like in the BCP 47.

Some example of why we need more flexibility and granularity:

the Kazakh language, was written in Arab, then in Latn, then in Cyrl and now they are going back to Latn... 4 (or 5) scripts is probably a record but it's not unusual for a language to have at least two scripts (I'm thinking of Serbian sr-Latn and sr-Cyrl, or Chinese: zh-Hant and zh-Hans).
one more extrem example: the Bornholm amulet has an inscription in Latin but written in runes. So if we want to model it correctly, we need the code "la-Runr". Runic latin is not common and have limited corpus but still, a wikidatian could want to work on that, and just add this word and move on (to an other strange epigraphy, like 4th century prototurkish written in Chinese characters).

My view is more a technical one (a code is valid in his format), for the social and validation part (a code is valid regarding the content encoded), I'm not sure how to best handle it (should we let entirely to the community? and can it be articulate with the LangCom?)

PS: anyhow, attention should be paid to the capitalization (ISO 639 is full lowercase, ISO 3166 is full uppercase and ISO 15924 has only the first letter in uppercase (the same letters can exists in different codes 'ca' for Catalan and 'CA' for Canada).

As explained in my prevuious message, I agree we need to specify at least language and script. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Retitled] T67626: [Epic] Support for queries on-wiki (automated list generation)

2018-06-01 Thread Micru
Micru renamed this task from "[Epic] support for complex queries on-wiki using Lua (automated list generation)" to "[Epic] Support for queries on-wiki (automated list generation)".Micru updated the task description. (Show Details)
CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONWe want to allow [complex queries](From the [[ https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Development_plan#Complex_queries)org/wiki/Wikidata:Development_plan#Automated_list_generation | development plan ]]:
Users are able to write queries like “all poets who lived in 1982” or “all cities with more than 1 Million inhabitants”. They are entered in a page in the Query namespace and internally saved as JSON. They are then executed when resources are available - usually not immediately. The result is cached. A query can be set to rerun at regular intervals or on-demand by an administrator. The result of the query is shown on the same page. It can also be accessed via the API. The clients can include the result of a query in their pages to for example create list articles. This will enable for example to have automatically updated list articles on Wikipedia.

However it is not decided yet whether the Queries will reside on Wikidata.org or on wiki. It's part of the discussion we will have to define the needs better.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T67626EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: MicruCc: Capankajsmilyo, He7d3r, PokestarFan, Ita140188, Esc3300, MisterSynergy, Pasleim, Micru, Deskana, JanZerebecki, Yellowcard, waldyrious, jeremyb, Ricordisamoa, Aklapper, Laddo, Bugreporter, -jem-, Liuxinyu970226, Lydia_Pintscher, Eloquence, Zellfaze, Lahi, Gq86, Darkminds3113, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, EBjune, merbst, LawExplorer, Avner, Gehel, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, jkroll, Smalyshev, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Tobias1984, Manybubbles, Mbch331___

2018-06-01 Thread Pamputt
Pamputt added a comment.
I strongly support the Micru's proposal. Using item to identify language, dialect or whatever is plenty of advantages:

it is really flexible. It is possible to use dialect, sub-dialect, language, proto-language, and so on
it is clearly identified. One item identify uniquely only one language. Several codes may be used to identify the same language.
it is already available and it will be maintained by the Wikidata community
it avoids conflicts on the language that are included. For example: it already exists items for Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Bosnian languages. They are considered by some linguists as only one language. Since some people would like to contribute in only one of these "languages", using items allow that directly. If we use code, how do we manage such case?

Also I think we should decorrelate language and script. If languages are similar to humans, then scripts are clothes. One language may use several scripts withtout modifying the language itself. So if we decide to use item to identify language, I think we have to use another item for specifying the script used by the Lexeme.

So, instead of having unreadable and incomprehensible codes, we should use two elements: one for the language and one for the scriptTASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T195740EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: PamputtCc: Pamputt, Liuxinyu970226, Micru, VIGNERON, Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, Aklapper, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T193636: [Bug] new representation or Lemma with same language code overwrites existing representation

2018-06-01 Thread Pablo-WMDE
Pablo-WMDE added a comment.
@Lydia_Pintscher

Lexeme lemmas and form representations use two rather different UX paradigms. This was the case already before this ticket was started but as we are now also dealing with validation and error messages we have to use one approach or the other.

Lemmas offers you the save button to click while the form is invalid (e.g. a lemma w/o a term value) - validation is done on the server-side and only presented after receiving the answer (tooltip on the save button).
Form representations disables (or at least tries to) the save button while the form is invalid - validation is done (partially) on the client and shown before the mistake is submitted.

The latter works well with the new approach of highlighting the invalid form field and indicating the problem already while the user is editing.
Applying the approach taken for representations to the lemmas would cause an inconsistency in how lemma (or header) errors are communicated to the user.

How do we proceed? There will be an inconsistency but we can transition away from it, the question is in which direction. In case of redundant lemma languages...

keep the lemma widget's submit button enabled and show the error only when the user clicks? (accept the inconsistency between lemma and representation widget)
disable the lemma widget's submit button? (accept the inconsistency inside lemma widget)

Remarks:

Technically the first option would be easier
Even when transitioning towards the "show errors immediately" generally we'd still need to maintain the capability to display post-submit errors because the frontend can only facilitate plausibility checks, backend errors can always still happen

I'll add a tiny bit more checking that the entrypoint.sh script fails if expected environment variables are missing then ask around and see if we think this kind of testing is valuable.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T195943WORKBOARDhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/board/71/EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: TarrowCc: Addshore, Aklapper, Tarrow, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, lisong, QZanden, Gstupp, LawExplorer, Abbe98, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Lydia_Pintscher, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T95553: Full stop in messages such as Wikibase-time-precision-century is incorrect in English

2018-06-01 Thread Ghouston
Ghouston added a comment.
I agree with Jc3s5h. Wikidata dates are represented in JSON with ISO 8601 strings with associated precisions, and a "century" precision value looks like:

time: "+2000-00-00T00:00:00Z"
precision: 7

The insignificant digits are always set to zero, apparently, and I'd expect the range of this value to be 2000-01-01 to 2099-12-31. Formatting it as "20. century" is confusing, to say the least. I suggest displaying it instead as "20XX", or "2000-2099".TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T95553EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: GhoustonCc: Ghouston, Jc3s5h, Larske, VIGNERON, Ayack, matej_suchanek, Hsarrazin, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Sjoerddebruin, Marsupium, PKM, Liuxinyu970226, TheDJ, Lydia_Pintscher, kaldari, Ricordisamoa, daniel, thiemowmde, Lucie, Amire80, Aklapper, Tobi_WMDE_SW, Wikidata-bugs, JulesWinnfield-hu, Conny, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, Soteriaspace, Jayprakash12345, JakeTheDeveloper, QZanden, LawExplorer, Srdjan_m, MuhammadShuaib, LNDDYL, Psychoslave, aude, Gryllida, Shizhao, Arrbee, Mbch331, Jay8g___
