[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T192967: UX/UI suggestions towards a new "query helper/query builder" interface

Great! Were there any overall findings that could help us in future designs?
(For example, it seems that repeatedly, the UIs suggested to start with a
property, but users wanted to start with an item.)
Also, to roughly keep track: How many users did test the UIs?

Thanks for pointing this out! It just indicates that, while one user should
be one row, I do not need the userID or user name, just some key that is unique
is the table.
Also (but I think you guessed so already), it would be great if a bot/not bot

2018-12-12 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.Jan_Dittrich added projects: Wikidata, Lexicographical data.
TASK DESCRIPTIONUser Story:: As a user, I want to enter long words in the lemma field in the lexeme interface

Current Problems: Currently, the lemma field is too small for longer words which are subsequently cut off.

F27514418: image.png

Possible Solution: Making the input box and its container larger in general is not sustainable since it breaks with the next slightly larger word (except we say a cutoff for every 1000th word is OK or so). It would probably make the most sense to have the box with a min-width and grow it with the word if the width is exhausted.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T211761EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jan_DittrichCc: Lydia_Pintscher, Jan_Dittrich, Nandana, Mringgaard, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, D3r1ck01, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___

Jan_Dittrich added a comment.
Let's use a lightbulb icon based on the lightbulb icon from OOUI :

F27775020: Potential issue2x.png

I did a bit of research on this. As the suggested icon should signify suggestion, I had a look what an established icon to signify "suggestion" is. The lightbulb seems to be a rather common icon for suggestion and it is there at least since the 90s. Alternatives I found overlapped with generic speech bubble iconography (sure, suggesting = communication = speech, in this thinking) but this is very generic to the point of "not even wrong" (compare with the use of arrows to signify "action") and clashed with other icons (Notification, Message…).

Given that the space is rather small (14x14px) it needs to be very simple. I think even the light bulb is a bit too complex visually (also given the constraints of a flat 1bit design) but it is far simpler than the alternatives I came across.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T204439EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jan_DittrichCc: Jan_Dittrich, Manu1400, abian, Sjoerddebruin, Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, Harmonia_Amanda, Aklapper, Lydia_Pintscher, Nandana, A.S.Kochergin, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, Agabi10, JGirault, D3r1ck01, Jonas, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T139081: Improve usability of rank selector

2019-01-16 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.
Reviewing the suggestions and what we got as suggestions, it seems to be really hard to "fix" 3 states ranks and that it is also not viable to redo the data model.

So to recap: We added titles to give some context of the use of these.

As a viable change that keeps the current structure and makes it more understandable, we could separate "preferred"/ "normal" and "deprecated" from each other. This could mean having a "flag" function (that either is active or not to the user) and a drop-down (of which normal or preferred is chosen) .

Reasoning: Normal and preferred are meaningful values. They might change, though, particularly a "preferred" might be demoted when a new "preferred" comes (See also the title-text of normal: "valid value but possibly historic"). Deprecated is different: It is not a correct value and stays this way, usually.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T139081EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jan_DittrichCc: MichaelSchoenitzer, daniel, Lydia_Pintscher, Incabell, Aklapper, Zppix, Jan_Dittrich, Nandana, A.S.Kochergin, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, JGirault, D3r1ck01, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

If we do this it should be very subtle; I looked at some other pages and did not see any highlighting in Wikipedia articles or e.g. at this handbook. ValueMapping is better to be done in frontend.

Is this currently done in the prototype on frontend or on backend?

The proposed value mapper spec won't work.…

I assume the set/add… directly map to Wikidata API calls, correct?

you can't say which value it needs to set.

Why is that? The value would be the value defined by the user via the input field, or do I interpret this wrong?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T215065EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Ladsgroup, Jan_DittrichCc: WMDE-leszek, Aklapper, Jan_Dittrich, Ladsgroup, RazShuty, Charlie_WMDE, Nandana, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, _jensen, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

I imagine to create a good 3rd party library to be hard and I currently do
not know good usecases for it. So let's proceed with caution there.

our usual code review processes are enough of a solution.

I think code review is not a good point for accepting or rejecting components.

  1. I assume the component library should be a joint effort at least of UX and
Devs
  2. In code review, the things are already build

There should probably be a way to drafts/suggestions which are reviewed
together by dev and UX using a channel which is easy to access and use without
specific dev or design skills.

I think we need ownership and coordination.
Even if we do not attempt to do something like OOUI. The same structures that
would help external people to use it are also useful internally to see what
components are there, to negotiate how to progress and to have quality
standards for things that go in the library.

The above mockup says "remove message" which is pretty much what it does. It
does not say "the edit is fine" or an equivalent, since this would probably
need more words than I can fit on a button. Also it currently has no fixed
semantic meaning, so removing it for one user is what is happening. When we
have the 3rd milestone we need a more elaborate UI which gives some explanation
for the now shared assertion of fine/not fine, probably in a popup.

As for getting the relation of clicks:

Of all people that opened the popper, how many people do click "dismiss

not do one or both of these.

This can be helpful, because the relation of "doing nothing" vs. "doing

Jan_Dittrich added subscribers: WMDE-leszek, Jan_Dittrich.Jan_Dittrich added a comment.
@Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE’s suggestion seems sensible, particularly since he tried already. I see the advantage that be block on the concerning thingy, not on the save button in general.

I want to point out that we might need to review this and other behavior from the point of UX so there might be changes to it (e.g. in this case we might need an error message or so). Or general: UX is behavior as well as looks and not all problems can be solved with another visual design (few can, actually).

This is not to discount efforts to make the best out of what can be done now (as trying it out was, I think, and helped greatly!). We just need to keep in mind that it might need some changes in the future beyond colors and position of elements – this is, behavior of features and UI (and I guess using vue.js it will be easier to do such changes!) [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T181077: Entity id isn't shown anywhere on a diff page

2018-01-08 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich added a comment.
It does not look nice, indeed. On the other hand, I assume it was never designed systematically (in the sense of "If we put IDs in the header, where else do we use this element?"). So I would frame it as a bit of (non-wicked) design debt. Like with technical debt, we might want to refactor it.

I would put the qID in the " "

Why? – Semantically we have 2 elements here:

the Explanation text ("Difference between revisions of") and…
the page title and the ID, both being different ways to point to the same concept.

Currently, we have the " " as the separator. They should remain the separator (to keep semantic clarity), even if it looks not awesome.
But actually, " " should be HTML tags that mark up the parts and then we could apply other styling than "" (The "" correspond to a pattern I also see in other areas of MW, where chaining strings seems to have been the way to go to highlight semantical difference, so there are characters like ", | , [ instead of tags)
You may know this from scientific (or other highly structured publications where book titles that are cited rarely appear as "War and Peace" but nicer as War and Peace (good writing tools also allow "" but they are inserted automatically by your citation management)

For a possible refactoring:

Put tags where the "" are and reintroduce them via CSS::after /::before (so no visual change done. but a better code structure)
When we have a style they should have, just lets change the CSS

2018-03-12 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.Jan_Dittrich triaged this task as "Normal" priority.Jan_Dittrich added projects: Wikidata.org, Tracking, Wikidata.
TASK DESCRIPTIONUser Story:: As a user, I want to have consistent search behavior across wikis and at UIs that look the same

Context of use: I assume the user would search mainly for items on Wikidata, but (with some search syntax) also for e.g. help or discussions.

Current Problems: Currently,we patch an item selector on top of the normal search box. This leads to inconsistencies e.g. as described in T63948

I created some inital designs

It is tricky to get the contrast right: enough to see it, but not too much to make reading hard. I can spec it more and try more, but I wonder: If the suggestions below could build upon the same code, we do two iterations:

I provide the designs (see above), dev builds the CSS
I adjust the CSS in colors and fine spacing and can evaluate the design directly in browser context, when done, spec is implemented.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T194748: Research: How are bot edits different than human edits on Wikidata?

2018-05-15 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.Jan_Dittrich added a project: Wikidata.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper.
TASK DESCRIPTIONStory: For future strategy, we wonder how bot edits differ from human edits and how bots and humans work peacefully together (or not). I would like to be able to give a data based account on that. I can imagine to sample some items, weight items by their use and then either cluster edits and/or code them manually (like: correcting, linking, referencing…)

I imagine this is a bit vague to immediately start, so we would need to come up with a mutual understanding that both covers practical needs as well as what the data can give us.

Assumption: Possibly, bots and humans have some separate tasks and some they "collaborate". Also, it might be interesting to see if/how authors and bots are connected (as in @Halfak’s analysis/rebuttal to that bots-fight-bots paper).

Possible outcome: Plausible hypothesis/patterns supported by the content of the edits.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T194748EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: GoranSMilovanovic, Jan_DittrichCc: RazShuty, Lydia_Pintscher, Jan_Dittrich, Halfak, Aklapper, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T139583: [Story] "citation needed" for Wikidata

2018-05-22 Thread Jan_Dittrich

A high-level-ish take on this:

Currently many items have no citation and while it would be nice to have one for every item, it seems that people focus on the most pressing first. As I got told in user research interviews e.g. "date of death" should always be sourced, particularly if concerning a recent date. I assume that other (implicit?) rules exist for other properties too (And if you know more rules that seem to be de-facto-standard, please send me a message)
This means that a general "all things need citation" would not work.

AND

As in T195052 suggested, a constraint based on "especially the ones likely to be challenged," might make sense.

AND

Since citation or not might depend on the context and modeling, I guess a "citation needed"-ish thing, like a "reference-tag"+comment or so (I know, if at all, it is future stuff) since it could reflect the reasoning of people editing and reading.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T202491: Order of Forms in Lexeme based on Alphabetical sorting of numbers

2018-08-22 Thread Jan_Dittrich
Jan_Dittrich created this task.Jan_Dittrich added a project: Lexicographical data.Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata.
TASK DESCRIPTIONUser Story:: As a user, I want to predict where information is in the UI so I can find what I am looking for

Context of use: I assume the user would to read a list of forms, e.g. to see if what they want to add is already there or to see where the form they added is.

Current Problems: Currently, the forms are sorted by ID (which is a number) but alphabetically – so 11 comes before 2.

Possible Solution: One way to improve the situation for the user is switching to sorting based on the number value which is more common in everyday life than sorting numbers by alphabet.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T202491EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jan_DittrichCc: Lydia_Pintscher, Lea_Lacroix_WMDE, WMDE-leszek, Jan_Dittrich, Mringgaard, Lahi, Gq86, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, LawExplorer, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Darkdadaah, Mbch331___
